Now I will be going out of my way to use a different shop after my disappointing experience here. After a $200 examination, I was told that I had some kind of major oil leak, and that I needed an alignment, as well as recommended I replace the steering gear box. Oil Leak - Since the tech made it sound like it was really bad, and yet I hadn't seen any signs of a leak beforehand, I asked him about that. He suggested I check my driveway. I responded that I already do, and it's completely clean. His response? "Maybe you just haven't noticed". Well, I checked when I got home, and every day for weeks after this appointment, and still... zero oil spots. My SUV is parked in my clean driveway 80% of the time and it's still clean as a whistle. The alignment - My SUV does not pull in any direction. At least not more than any average car might on uneven roads. I've driven vehicles that needed an alignment before, and this isn't that. The Steering box - They quoted $2,500 to replace my steering box. The break down was $1,400 for labor, and $1,100 for parts. The average cost to replace that same part in my exact model SUV anywhere else: between $800 and $900, for parts and labor. You do the math. Anyhow, after my appointment here I made time that weekend to leave my SUV with another shop that had come recommended by someone else. The owner of that shop, a man who's been in the auto business for literally decades, said he was appalled by the quote Jack Dane gave me. I paid another $200 for him to do his own examination. Guess what? No alignment necessary, steering box is completely fine, and no oil leak found(just average seepage, cleaned up no problem). Want more proof that these guys are not to be trusted? The initial reason I brought it in was because the transmission seemed to slip a little, mostly when my SUV was cold. My particular model doesn't have a dipstick for the trans fluid so I wanted an expert to check all of that out. The Jack Dane tech noted on my invoice: "Observed trans fluid at recommended levels". Guess what? The other tech, with more experience, showed me that the trans fluids were actually almost 2 full quarts LOWER than the recommended levels. He even brought it over to another tech who is even more experienced with transmissions and that guy confirmed it was definitely too low and likely causing what I was experiencing. He topped off my trans fluid for me, and guess what again? The cold slipping issue completely vanished. A month later and it's running good as new, and still no oil spots anywhere I park. DO NOT trust this shop.

The business owner, Charles, made an afternoon appointment and met us at the Hertz car sales lot right on time. His inspection took just over an hour and when it was done, Charles explained his findings to us. It was clear to us that Charles has deep automotive expertise - plus he is an excellent communicator, patiently answering all of our questions. In the end we had a list of issues to present to Hertz, and their standard sales contract was amended to require Hertz to address/resolve these issues before our car is delivered in the next day or two. By the time we got home Charles had emailed us a 6 page written report for our records. In addition, the fee he charged was very reasonable. I had received other quotes that were $10 and $20 higher, and they required you to take the car to their location. Having a mobile inspection service made the logistics so much easier. My mother is 87 years old and she had her van ran into in a hit and run in the Raley's parking lot…read more The damage was minimal but the insurance company decided to total the vehicle rather than fix it and pay her off instead of repairing it. Therefore it became a salvaged vehicle. My mother was not ready to part with her most beloved van so she bought it back from the insurance company and went through all of the hassle to be able to re-register it again with DMV, including a brake and light check. That was two years ago. Then came covid. Last year she sent in her check and smog report to get her renewal but it never came in the mail. She does not use computers and for the next year could not seem to get past the recorded phone messages with DMV. Finally the DMVs opened up again so I took her to one of the offices and waited in the line that wrapped around the building with her. I was not able to actually go inside the building with her due to Covid protocols so I waited for her in the car. She notified me once she had returned to my vehicle that they had lost her break and light documents and she had to have the inspection done all over again. She tried to go back to her original brake and light place in West Sacramento. After waiting two weeks for her appointment they told he she had to leave the vehicle all day just to get a 30 minute brake and light check and the lady was very obnoxious to her. I hate people that are not kind and patient to the elderly. She takes care of my father who has dementia so she could not stay and therefore still unable to get a certificate. I looked up places on Yelp and found SMG. They take drop ins so I decided to take my mother there. We arrived there at about a quarter after nine on a Thursday morning and was instructed to turn around and get in line with the other cars waiting on the other side of the street. They were quite busy but they still were very patient and took the extra time to help my mother and they treated her just the way they would want others to treat their own mothers. By ten o'clock everything was taken care of and we were on our merry way. We can only hope DMV does not lose her certificate this time.
