I stopped by here earlier today with my family for our morning coffee. Whenever we go on vacation,…read morewe try to visit a new coffee shop each morning, and on this day we decided to head to the Speckled Hen since it was close by. The shop is located on East Main Street and has parking on both the side and the back. From the outside, I did not expect it to be very large, but the interior ended up being surprisingly spacious. The main area includes the ordering counter along with display cases and a Christmas tree, as it was right before the holiday. The cashier was especially nice to my kids and told us about a play area located in one of the side rooms, which we immediately headed toward. That room could seat around twenty four people and had wood floors along with black metal and dark wood chairs. The real win for us, though, was the kids play area. It was set up like a miniature version of the coffee shop, complete with play food and desserts, which kept our kids happily occupied while we enjoyed our drinks. For my coffee this morning, I went with the Gingerbread House Latte, and my wife chose the same. The coffee was very good. You got a solid coffee flavor up front, followed by a clear gingerbread note, and then it finished with a pleasant sweetness that lingered for a bit without becoming overpowering. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. Both my wife and I enjoyed our coffees, and while I did not eat anything myself, my wife enjoyed her berry Nutella croissant and my daughter really liked her parfait.

BLUF: Go check it out, you won't regret it…read more TLDR: OMG I'm so glad I stumbled upon this adorable coffee shop on cozy Main Street in North East, MD. It was just me, so I only got half a dozen donuts with a knife so I could taste them all! I tried: Cookies & Cream, Salted Caramel, Maple Bacon, Toasted Coconut, Chai, and Fluffernuter. Let me start by saying the cake part of these donuts is just perfect. Not too dense, lightly crisp on the outside, and insanely fresh. The toppings might sound over the top, but they weren't. They were perfectly subtle to add a hint of flavor without a dose of diabetes. And the coffee- such unique lattes both in name and flavors. I went with Davy Joey's Locker with an extra shot of espresso. So good. Not overly sweet and not bitter at all. And then I just had to try the cute little pistachio cannoli. Shell was filled upon ordering, so the shell was nice and crispy. Now this was super sweet, but I haven't met a cannoli yet that wasn't! Barista was friendly & bubbly and patient when it took me some time to pick my 6 donuts. Basic tables and chairs with some bench seating along the window. Pillows & chairs could use a refresh, as well as the bathroom, looking a bit worn & dingy, but that's literally the only negative thing about this place.

Been here a couple times. Donuts were good. I was in the area and wanted to stop by. Unfortunately…read morethis place is closed down. No signs for any renovations or opening again.

Tik Tok made me do it and I'm glad I did it!…read more My co-worker recently had been seeing some videos about the food at Newberry Cafe so of course we had to make a lunch time stop to see what everyone was talking about. Newberry reminds me of your hometown bakery where everyone gathers in the morning for their donuts and coffee before heading off to work. Very much like many of the shops in the Bel Air area. The employees are super nice at Newberry. Really taking their time to provide great customer service to each patron that strolls through the doors. Although it was lunch time we settled on breakfast sandwiches with homefries. And I of course had to grab a donut because it's a must, and a latte. The breakfast sandwich was just what you would want to start your day, a savory piece of meat and cheese on a soft bagel. But the star of the show was the homefries. Cooked and seasoned perfectly, crispy on the outside and a soft texture on the inside. We both loved the potatoes. My glazed donut was divine, pillowy with just the right amount of glaze to not make the donut too sweet. The latte was a little to sweet for me, but I'm a little finicky with the sugar level in many caffeinated drinks. All the times I've ventured into Bel Air I never thought to stop at Newberry and I'm glad I finally did. I'll definitely be back to try more of their yummy donuts and breakfast sandwiches in the future.

Before it was Simon's the Otterbein's name was over the storefront. They moved to Cranbrook a long time ago and at least two generations of Simon's were keeping up shop. Legend has it that Mr Simon pretty much lived in the place!! Well, the Simon family sold the business about a year ago to a Latino family. They are great folks and quick to offer a happy greeting upon entering the shop. Their famed sugar cookies dominate the display cases behind the counter. My mission this morning was to acquire two parcels of a deeply personal culinary weakness: DONUTS! Made from scratch donuts. Far better than Krispy and gas station or c-store donuts. At 1.50 each, you can't beat it as far as flavor and quality go. My second visit in about a month. I'll try to make it more frequently, but, you know, donuts... It's easy to stumble...

I bought a peach cake at their Cockeysville location yesterday and although the peaches were the same sweet and delicious, the cake part wasn't the same. I was disappointed. I know it is no longer a family run bakery anymore but I thought they got the recipes from the Simon family. I hope they do if they haven't because I won't be going back. The cake part of the peach cake just needs a little something to make it taste like Simon's!!
