I'm skeptical when a restaurant self-identifies as a "gastropub". The term is overused to the point…read moreof cliche these days but in this case it seemed right. The food wasn't just the standard pub fare; everything we tried that day was excellent. I had fish tacos and French onion soup. Two flour tortillas, packed with fried haddock, coleslaw, and a spicy remoulade, served with lime wedges. The tortillas were toasted for extra flavor and held together well, easily holding the generous fish portions and wet coleslaw. The fish was fresh and the batter was light and crispy. Portion size was reasonable. The onion soup was outstanding. The broth was full-bodied and rich and seemed homemade, not from canned stock - though I can't say for sure. It was a bit salty like most, but the seasonings (I noted thyme and pepper) balanced it. The cheese on top (Swiss I think) was nicely browned, the onions sweet and caramelized, and there were plenty of toasted croutons made from a French baguette. Scallions on top added color, some crunch, and completed the dish. When I got the bill I was pleased to see the soup was only $3 not $8 as listed on the menu, because they treated it as a substitute for the fries normally served with the tacos. Which was fine as I didn't really need fries - and I had some of the wife's anyway, which were very good. The wife had The Clothier: a sandwich with marinated fried chicken, pepper jack cheese, candied jalapenos, smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, and house-made spicy ranch. Excellent. For a drink I had a Citizen's Cider on tap, one of my favorites. Beers on tap - of which there were many - and the cider are offered in 16 and 22 ounce sizes. The menu had lots of options. The expected pub standards and also some unusual items liked fried green beans, tomato artichoke bisque, and an extensive baked mac & cheese selection. The desserts included "Our Famous Twiggie", a cookie (choose from 3) topped with ice cream, two kinds of syrup, and whipped cream. The cookie is baked to order and takes 15 minutes! The interior looked really nice, but the day was so pleasant we sat outside on the street-front patio, across from the St. Albans city park. It was so pretty with the bountiful floral arrangements in the park and on the sidewalks. I know it's not the restaurant's doing, but it really contributed to the ambience. Some other points to mention: The inside walls are covered with a rotating selection of local art, with the featured artist changing periodically. I don't know if the art is for sale or for display only. And the events calendar listed "Wine Wednesday" throughout August and September: 1/2 price bottles of wine. That's an event I would support!

With the dismal and abominably warm winter New England has had in 2022-2023 ski season, we decided to go as far north as we could without crossing the border with Canada, so we lodged and had a superb weekend at Jay Peak, VT. In addition, one of my college classmates and Air Force career colleagues lives in nearby Montgomery Center, so he recommended the Black Lantern and it was one of the best recommendations ever. First of all, the history. Montgomery VT has the most covered bridges in a single town jurisdiction in the US. The area had a role to play in the War of Independence, when construction on the Bailey-Hazen Military Road to Hazen Notch began in 1777 as a way for the Continental Army to invade Quebec. Hazen's Notch Road begins a few blocks from the Black Lantern. The Inn was built in 1803 and remained as an Inn until it closed down in 2015. A group of concerned citizens bought the historic property, remodeled it, bought another building to expand the business, and reopened it in 2018. Its six rooms in the historic lodge and the four suites in the annex, allow for vacationers to stay in the historic town with close proximity to Jay Peak. But this review is for the dining. The truly fine dining offered here. We made reservations and they were honored on the spot, considering the restaurant was certainly busy. The beautiful, cozy and early American decor matched the ambiance and persona of the place. We got together with our friends and were seated in a wonderful location with privacy. The Black Lantern has joined into the farm to table movement and it shows in the amazing, fresh and abundant food available at the venue. Their beef and pork come from a local natural farm a few miles away. So does their lamb, coming from a local farmer. Their chicken is local. Their cheeses are from several Vermont producers including the ubiquitous Cabot Cheese, but also the Boucher Family Farm, the Jasper Hill Farm and the Vermont Creamery. Fresh vegetables come from nearby sources. The local and fresh sourcing of their food shows in the quality and taste of everything on the menu. And then there's their beers.... Local breweries and micros make an extensive part of their menu. Burlington's Fiddlehead, Zero Gravity and Queen City, St Alban's 14th Star beer, and Essex's First Republic. Their ciders are sourced from three locations in Vermont and even they carry wine from local producers. And their coffee is fair trade certified and roasted in town by Big Jay Roasters. The meal was impressive. We started the evening with Fried Yuca infused with truffle oil - succulent, and their Fried Brussel Sprouts that came encrusted with bacon, Gorgonzola and Parmesan cheeses. Crispy, tasty, superb. Then the salads for everyone. Fresh, crispy, beautiful. And it was time for main courses. I had their Chicken Curry stew which turned out delicious. Two of us had the lobster ravioli, made on the premises and as one of our group said, "heavy on the lobster" with not much filler. And then the steaks. About a pound and a half, perfectly seared with marbled pink inside. Truly amazing. Sadly, we had no room for dessert. With amazingly generous portions and two shared appetizers, we were stuffed. The pork was tender and the glaze was the perfect touch. The home made apple sauce was a nice addition and was so fresh. Finally the garlic green beans were a top choice to round out this dinner. If we have time we will go back because apparently they have the best burger in town and it sells out everyday.

While there I was able to sample a number of their ales and lagers from tap and cans. Some cans even traveled back home. And of course, I quickly jumped onto their their fan band wagon, not quite like on of the Beatles crazed screaming groupies from the 60's or Ken Kesey's Electric KoolAid Bus, but in terms of Ales - pretty darn close! Some of my favorites sampled: Tribute 8.1% DIPA, Maple Breakfast Stout 6.5%, Valor Ale 5.2% Lighter Amber Ale, Citranade 7.7% IPA, their decadent Wee Heavy 8.9% Scotch Ale. Their tap and brew list ever changing to keep those fan's mouth watering, including others like Sours, Marzen, Weiss', Kolsch, Boch, Stouts, Smoked Ales, Wild/Farmhouses', and barrel aged concoctions.
