Previously, Dollar Car Rental used to be the main location to rent a Jeep (or other vehicle) from,…read morebut since they closed in October 2018, Lana'i Car Rental has stepped in to become the newer flagship location for rentals. Please note that Lana'i Car Rental is not located at the Lana'i Airport, so you will have to arrange for a taxi or rideshare to take you to and from the offices in the center of Lana'i City. Lanai Taxi and Rabaca's Limousine Service are two great options for ground transportation. Kama'aina (local resident) discounts are also available. You can book on Lana'i Car Rental's website or call them between 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM local time. It's a bit of a learning curve and a patient process. Sometimes the staff may not always be able to get back to you immediately, so I would recommend you call and follow-up periodically to ensure that your reservation is actually confirmed. Now, when you are able to speak to someone, they will take down basic information, contact information and payment information, and then send you a confirmation e-mail. But overall, the staff is awesome and very helpful! As for the drop-off process, there is now a drop box for rental keys outside their office door or you can also knock on the door to return it to the staff. I plan on coming back to Lanai Car Rental when I am visiting next time!

Ever since Dollar Rental Car shut down last year (Oct. 2018), I was kinda worried about my next…read morevisit to Lanai for work. I was wondering how I was gonna get around Lanai, especially if there were no longer any rental car businesses. Would I have to walk? Maybe catch a Taxi? Or perhaps there is someone who drives Uber, or Lyft? Well not to worry gang, "Lanai Car Rental" has opened up shop as the remote island is in dire need of a rental car business. How did I find Lanai Car Rental? Purely by luck my friends.........I had to go back to Lanai for work yesterday, and upon planning my trip (from Monday), I decided to "Google" transportation services on Lanai. Of course while searching, the name brand rental companies did not show up on my search, but upon searching further, I came across some info. about Napa Auto Parts, & a Convenience store. Yeah it's not related to anything about Rental Cars, but I figured if I called & talked to a local from Lanai, maybe they could give a Bruddah some insight on what to do for transportation on Lanai. Sure enough, my persistence paid off as I called and spoke to a lady at the convenience store, and she gave me a phone number for Lanai Car Rental. Whoo Hoo! Of course I call late in the afternoon (on Monday), and nobody picks up the phone, so I leave a message on their answering machine. The next day (Tuesday morning) I call the rental car company again, and this time a lady picks up. Upon talking to the lady, I set up my car rental for Wednesday. She takes down my basic information, & payment information, and I was set to get my rental car. A few great things I liked about Lanai Car Rental - 1. The lady that helped me was friendly on the phone, and setting up the car rental appointment was easy. 2. It appears they don't have a lot of cars (looked like they had no more than 10 to 15 cars?), but the cars were like brand new. I ended up getting a brand new electric car called the - Chevrolet Bolt, which only had 6000 miles on it. 3. The prices were pretty reasonable, as I paid only $78.12 (with tax) for the use of the rental car for the day. A few things I didn't care for (about the rental car process) - 1. There is no free shuttle pickup (to get you to/from) the Lanai Airport. The Lanai Car Rental agency is like a good 5 to 6 miles away, so you will have to pay for a taxi to get a ride to the rental car agency. (see my review about Rabaca's Limousine Service). 2. The car return process could have been better. When I took out the rental car, I told the lady working at Lanai Car Rental agency that I was gonna return my rental car at 3:00 PM (as I had to catch my flight home at 4:30 PM). When I came back at 3:00 PM, the rental car place was closed! YIKES! (Please Note: The business hours listed was 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM everyday). I knocked on the door & nobody was there. Then I call the Lanai Car Rental number, and nobody picks up. So frustrating! I had no way of properly returning my rental car keys (as I didn't want to incur any additional charges). This place didn't even have a car key drop box. After my taxi shuttle arrived to take me back to the airport, the taxi driver even tried to help me find away to return my car rental keys. Shortly after, a worker who does car detailing was nice enough to grab my rental car keys, and he told me that he would return the keys to the ladies at the Lanai Car Rental agency. Phew! Of course when I get to the airport, and was trying to check in at the gate through the TSA line, I get frantic calls, & emails from the lady that worked at the Lanai Car Rental agency (about the car keys, go figure). Of course I called her back & gave her all the info. about where the car keys were. I know this rental car business is fairly new, and I suspect they are still trying to work out a few kinks. Hopefully they will at least add a car key drop box to alleviate any car return issues should they decide to step out for a little while.

Thankfully when it was time for our day trip, all of the sites were fully accessible. We packed in a full day visiting Garden of the Gods, Shipwreck Beach, Lanai Cat Sanctuary, Hulopoe Bay and hiking the Pu'upehe Trail. We started with breakfast at Blue Ginger and later visited the 50s themed diner in the new bowling center for afternoon ice cream. The Jeep was quite new, very clean, with CarPlay, and everything was in good working order. I highly recommend downloading offline maps for navigating Lanai, as there is barely a bar of cell service, even in town. We never actually had to use 4WD for the Jeep, but the height clearance sure did help us on some of the rough dirt roads to some of the sites (places you'd never want to take a regular car). Jim gave us a thorough explanation and tips for visiting the sites when we arrived on the morning shuttle to pickup the Jeep (text the shuttle company ahead of time to reserve your spot at the ferry harbor). There was a laminated map inside the Jeep for us to take with us for the day. Process was smooth. Would rent from Cheap Jeeps again if visiting Lanai. Mahalo!

Keep in mind that they rent on calendar days, not 24-hour periods unlike most of today's rental companies. First, it definitely does help to follow their detailed instructions (apparently some past renters have not taken the time to do just that), and one of the main things they do emphasize is that none of their vehicles are to be taken off-road, as they are GPS-tracked. I had no plans this time around on going to any of the locations that require off-roading anyway, plus the weather was so rainy even for that particular time of year (month of May) that the dirt roads would have been too muddy to drive on even I did rent a Jeep from another company. Roadside parking is perfectly fine and they say a big yes to visiting the Lana'i Cat Sanctuary, though caution should always be exercised when having to go on the short gravel road to get to and from the parking lot. Make sure you have images of your driver's license and proof of insurance ready to send to Judi and be sure to sign the rental agreement. Then of course, do the credit card payment online and then you'll get a confirmation e-mail. Prices are pretty reasonable for even a location like Lana'i, and you will get the $50 refuel deposit refunded upon texting a receipt of the gas receipt. Very good family-run rental car company and I certainly hope to rent from them again down the road if I need a sedan/hatchback!

I was able to arrange a ride from Lanai Airport to the Lanai Car Rental in center of town on a Friday morning, and then from the de Brums Lanai (Airbnb cottage) back to the airport on a Sunday mid-day, and Alberta has a great personality and excellent customer service! Lanai Taxi is one of only two main transportation services on the Pineapple Isle. Best to text Alberta with the desired dates, times, and locations that you are looking to be picked up on. Also, from my personal experience, when it comes to Mokulele Airlines flights into Lanai, it is very helpful to text her when your interisland flight is actually boarding and departing (she will only head to the airport when confirmation is provided due to the number of flight delays that occur), and again when deplaning and claiming your luggage at Lanai Airport. She accepts cash or Venmo. The next time I can make it out to Lanai, I will definitely contact Alberta and Lanai Taxi!
