Very great experience with Judi and her team of 808 Day Trip. They answered my questions and inquiries about car rentals via text and e-mail and provided all the procedures and information on where to find the rental Nissan Hatchback. Keep in mind that they rent on calendar days, not 24-hour periods unlike most of today's rental companies. First, it definitely does help to follow their detailed instructions (apparently some past renters have not taken the time to do just that), and one of the main things they do emphasize is that none of their vehicles are to be taken off-road, as they are GPS-tracked. I had no plans this time around on going to any of the locations that require off-roading anyway, plus the weather was so rainy even for that particular time of year (month of May) that the dirt roads would have been too muddy to drive on even I did rent a Jeep from another company. Roadside parking is perfectly fine and they say a big yes to visiting the Lana'i Cat Sanctuary, though caution should always be exercised when having to go on the short gravel road to get to and from the parking lot. Make sure you have images of your driver's license and proof of insurance ready to send to Judi and be sure to sign the rental agreement. Then of course, do the credit card payment online and then you'll get a confirmation e-mail. Prices are pretty reasonable for even a location like Lana'i, and you will get the $50 refuel deposit refunded upon texting a receipt of the gas receipt. We used 808 Day Trip for a car rental on Lanai at the end of November, and had a great experience. We swapped information and agreements with Judi before the rental by e-mail and then text messages on the day of the rental so we could find the car in the parking lot at Manele harbor, with keys exactly where they said they'd be, and with no additional hassle or paperwork, we were off. The car was a shiny blue Ford Explorer, and was very comfortable for 4 of us. It ran great for the day we had it, and the return was as easy as the pickup. It served our purpose for getting a sample of what is on Lanai perfectly. The drawback is that cars from this company can only be used on paved roads, and there are not that many miles of paved road on Lanai. You can get to Hulopoe Beach, the Four Seasons, Lanai City, the Lanai Airport, the Cat Sanctuary, and almost to Shipwreack Beach, but that's about it. Garden of the Gods, Petroglyph sites, the main hiking trails all would need 4 wheel drive, which is available, but at a considerably higher price. So, if you're looking for an option for a day trip (and you have cell service in Lanai for the required text messages - we had to text a photo of our gas receipt to prove we filled up for the return), this worked really well for us, especially the easy pickup right by the ferry. There's a lot to do in a day. But look for a 4WD if you want to explore the back country. read more

The most affordable car rental option on the island!!! Believe you me, I checked for hours for all possible rental agencies! Forget the 4x4 jeep experience...not needed at all. I inquired with one agency offering their jeeps at the rate of $197 for the day; which does NOT include drop off service! You still have to pay $10 per person (one way) for shuttle service into town and then $10 per person to be shuttled back to the ferry (or airport)...LOL. Judy brings (or already has stationed) your vehicle in the ferry parking upper parking lot, ready to drive away upon arrival. The cost is around $145 (rental fee, taxes, and road fee). In all honesty, if you are like me and a Lanai trip is a once in a lifetime visit, rent the vehicle and at least drive down to the end of the road of Shipwreck Beach (walk the rest of the way, visit the cat sanctuary, and visit the city town center. I would never in a million years pay so much for a rental, if it wasn't a once-in-a-life-time experience! Our rental was a Nissan Hatchback with just under 50,000 miles on it. It ran and looked great! I was expecting a junky looking vehicle. Thanks for not cheapening your vehicles Judy! Gas is $4.80 per gallon and there is only one gas station on the island. It cost me just over $7 in gas for our entire trip. So, you have a $60 per person ferry ride (roundtrip) + $145 car rental + $7 in gas = $272 for a Lanai trip for two people...definitely doable! I did some snorkeling there and I thought it was okay. I did not see any dolphins, but I did see the second coolest thing while snorkeling there...a giant sting ray with white spots on the back...way cool. The first best thing I have seen snorkeling was the giant manta rays on the Big Island (Kona area). Here is a tip: don't drive to the far west of the island...it dead ends into the shipping port with a guard station at the end of the road and practically nothing to see; except for sea cliffs...no big deal. The best sea cliffs I have seen were in Ireland! Judy charges a $300 deposit on your credit card, which is refundable, granted that you return the car in the exact same condition you left with it. You e-mail her a copy of your driver's license and you complete the signed forms through a really cool online document signing software. I did this all through my iPhone in minutes! We're planning to visit the island of Lana'i off of Maui for the second time in the past 3 years. The first time was with Trilogy on their Discover Lana'i excursion. It was an amazing day, but we were limited to the Hulopo'e beach area. This time we've made reservations with 808 Day Trip to rent a car for the day. Since this may be our last trip to Lana'i we want the freedom to explore the island. I was thinking about renting a Jeep since we overland in the Pacific Northwest in our Jeep JLUR Recon. However, I'd rather check out the city to see how the locals live instead of pretending to rock crawl and look at a shipwreck. If you're going to stay on paved roads and need to rent a car, send Judi an email and she'll take very good care of you, kama'aina or not. The process is way easier than I expected and Judi will send clear instructions along the way. First, book your ferry and specify when you arrive and depart (date and times). Provide your name and other contact info. Read and sign the rental agreement via DocuSign. And then send DL and proof of insurance. Handle the credit card payment online and then you'll receive an email the day before. You pick up and drop off the car by the ferry. Very simple and easy. So here is the skinny. I'm an explorer at heart so this really was not the car rental company for me but for running around the island on it's paved roads it's perfect. You have to know and they will tell you up front YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DRIVE ON ANY UNPAVED ROAD SURFACE WITHOUT A $500.00 FEE ACCESSED. GPS TRACKING is real so don't lie, you'll always get caught and then you look like a fool so do your research before you even go to Lana'i, I'll leave it at that Now for the good parts, they are very responsive in setting up your rental. It happens like now and that's a bit of the problem, you are excited to get to go and explore yet another Hawaiian island and you just sign everything without reading everything, read everything in detail before you rent, it's a great service but know you're not going to be four wheeling in their cars in any way shape or form without incurring serious expense. The service of getting off the ferry and the car being there waiting for you is great. If what you want to do is go into town and check that out (the cultural center is really a must) and a some other paved accessible places and drive yourself there at your own pace the car and the service they provide is clean, courteous and quite adequate. If you're really adventurous and want to explore and get on some dirt roads on the island you might want to look at other options. read more

I was happy to be able to rent a vehicle from 808 Day Trip on short notice. Although the vehicle I rented was not allowed to go off-road,I wasn't planning to anyway. We visited Lanai on 04-29-2022 and rented from 808. The car was a Jeep Compass. We had visited Lanai before and had taken the van to the cat sanctuary and Lanai City. We wanted to be on our own this time so rented a car. Cost was $195 for the day but worth it. Car was really clean. The car was left in the parking lot at the ferry dock and was easily accessed. Had to stay on paved roads (not a problem). Went to the Cat Santuary (2X) and lunch at the Blue Ginger (teriyaki chicken was great!) and drove the other 2 paved roads. Saw lots of turkeys but no deer this time. Judy was easy to work with. Caveat---- Reserving online is somewhat confusing and when I googled for rental cars, it kept going between 808 and Lanai Car Rental. For a while, I actually had 2 cars rented until I figured out they are different companies. I'm sure the other one is good, but didn't rent from them. Anyway, a trip to Lana'i and car rental with 808 Day Trip are highly recommended. read more

They refused a refund even though the airline canceled our flight, and all flights, from Kauai to Lanai when we will be there next year. I understand that if we canceled ourselves that a refund would not be given, but this was totally out of our hands. The "We're a small local business, and the no refund policy keeps us in business" is bull. We booked and had to cancel from several small, local businesses for this year's trip due to the virus.
