    The Cat Sanctuary!

We rented a car today from 808 Day Trip. The car was easy to find and was the perfect size to zoom around the island. We were excited to explore the cat sanctuary and visit Sweetheart Rock. The company's owners were very helpful and answered all my questions. We will recommend your company to all our friends.

808 Day Trip Car at Manele Bay Pick-up location
    Frank S.

We used 808 Day Trip for a car rental on Lanai at the end of November, and had a great experience. We swapped information and agreements with Judi before the rental by e-mail and then text messages on the day of the rental so we could find the car in the parking lot at Manele harbor, with keys exactly where they said they'd be, and with no additional hassle or paperwork, we were off. The car was a shiny blue Ford Explorer, and was very comfortable for 4 of us. It ran great for the day we had it, and the return was as easy as the pickup. It served our purpose for getting a sample of what is on Lanai perfectly. The drawback is that cars from this company can only be used on paved roads, and there are not that many miles of paved road on Lanai. You can get to Hulopoe Beach, the Four Seasons, Lanai City, the Lanai Airport, the Cat Sanctuary, and almost to Shipwreack Beach, but that's about it. Garden of the Gods, Petroglyph sites, the main hiking trails all would need 4 wheel drive, which is available, but at a considerably higher price. So, if you're looking for an option for a day trip (and you have cell service in Lanai for the required text messages - we had to text a photo of our gas receipt to prove we filled up for the return), this worked really well for us, especially the easy pickup right by the ferry. There's a lot to do in a day. But look for a 4WD if you want to explore the back country.

History...a sight only seen while with a car rental!

The most affordable car rental option on the island!!! Believe you me, I checked for hours for all possible rental agencies! Forget the 4x4 jeep experience...not needed at all. I inquired with one agency offering their jeeps at the rate of $197 for the day; which does NOT include drop off service! You still have to pay $10 per person (one way) for shuttle service into town and then $10 per person to be shuttled back to the ferry (or airport)...LOL. Judy brings (or already has stationed) your vehicle in the ferry parking upper parking lot, ready to drive away upon arrival. The cost is around $145 (rental fee, taxes, and road fee). In all honesty, if you are like me and a Lanai trip is a once in a lifetime visit, rent the vehicle and at least drive down to the end of the road of Shipwreck Beach (walk the rest of the way, visit the cat sanctuary, and visit the city town center. I would never in a million years pay so much for a rental, if it wasn't a once-in-a-life-time experience! Our rental was a Nissan Hatchback with just under 50,000 miles on it. It ran and looked great! I was expecting a junky looking vehicle. Thanks for not cheapening your vehicles Judy! Gas is $4.80 per gallon and there is only one gas station on the island. It cost me just over $7 in gas for our entire trip. So, you have a $60 per person ferry ride (roundtrip) + $145 car rental + $7 in gas = $272 for a Lanai trip for two people...definitely doable! I did some snorkeling there and I thought it was okay. I did not see any dolphins, but I did see the second coolest thing while snorkeling there...a giant sting ray with white spots on the back...way cool. The first best thing I have seen snorkeling was the giant manta rays on the Big Island (Kona area). Here is a tip: don't drive to the far west of the island...it dead ends into the shipping port with a guard station at the end of the road and practically nothing to see; except for sea cliffs...no big deal. The best sea cliffs I have seen were in Ireland! Judy charges a $300 deposit on your credit card, which is refundable, granted that you return the car in the exact same condition you left with it. You e-mail her a copy of your driver's license and you complete the signed forms through a really cool online document signing software. I did this all through my iPhone in minutes! Not hard at all...great job with that Judy!

Please note that Lana'i Car Rental is not located at the Lana'i Airport, so you will have to arrange for a taxi or rideshare to take you to and from the offices in the center of Lana'i City. Lanai Taxi and Rabaca's Limousine Service are two great options for ground transportation. Kama'aina (local resident) discounts are also available. You can book on Lana'i Car Rental's website or call them between 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM local time. It's a bit of a learning curve and a patient process. Sometimes the staff may not always be able to get back to you immediately, so I would recommend you call and follow-up periodically to ensure that your reservation is actually confirmed. Now, when you are able to speak to someone, they will take down basic information, contact information and payment information, and then send you a confirmation e-mail. But overall, the staff is awesome and very helpful! As for the drop-off process, there is now a drop box for rental keys outside their office door or you can also knock on the door to return it to the staff. I plan on coming back to Lanai Car Rental when I am visiting next time!

I was wondering how I was gonna get around Lanai, especially if there were no longer any rental car businesses. Would I have to walk? Maybe catch a Taxi? Or perhaps there is someone who drives Uber, or Lyft? Well not to worry gang, "Lanai Car Rental" has opened up shop as the remote island is in dire need of a rental car business. How did I find Lanai Car Rental? Purely by luck my friends.........I had to go back to Lanai for work yesterday, and upon planning my trip (from Monday), I decided to "Google" transportation services on Lanai. Of course while searching, the name brand rental companies did not show up on my search, but upon searching further, I came across some info. about Napa Auto Parts, & a Convenience store. Yeah it's not related to anything about Rental Cars, but I figured if I called & talked to a local from Lanai, maybe they could give a Bruddah some insight on what to do for transportation on Lanai. Sure enough, my persistence paid off as I called and spoke to a lady at the convenience store, and she gave me a phone number for Lanai Car Rental. Whoo Hoo! Of course I call late in the afternoon (on Monday), and nobody picks up the phone, so I leave a message on their answering machine. The next day (Tuesday morning) I call the rental car company again, and this time a lady picks up. Upon talking to the lady, I set up my car rental for Wednesday. She takes down my basic information, & payment information, and I was set to get my rental car. A few great things I liked about Lanai Car Rental - 1. The lady that helped me was friendly on the phone, and setting up the car rental appointment was easy. 2. It appears they don't have a lot of cars (looked like they had no more than 10 to 15 cars?), but the cars were like brand new. I ended up getting a brand new electric car called the - Chevrolet Bolt, which only had 6000 miles on it. 3. The prices were pretty reasonable, as I paid only $78.12 (with tax) for the use of the rental car for the day. A few things I didn't care for (about the rental car process) - 1. There is no free shuttle pickup (to get you to/from) the Lanai Airport. The Lanai Car Rental agency is like a good 5 to 6 miles away, so you will have to pay for a taxi to get a ride to the rental car agency. (see my review about Rabaca's Limousine Service). 2. The car return process could have been better. When I took out the rental car, I told the lady working at Lanai Car Rental agency that I was gonna return my rental car at 3:00 PM (as I had to catch my flight home at 4:30 PM). When I came back at 3:00 PM, the rental car place was closed! YIKES! (Please Note: The business hours listed was 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM everyday). I knocked on the door & nobody was there. Then I call the Lanai Car Rental number, and nobody picks up. So frustrating! I had no way of properly returning my rental car keys (as I didn't want to incur any additional charges). This place didn't even have a car key drop box. After my taxi shuttle arrived to take me back to the airport, the taxi driver even tried to help me find away to return my car rental keys. Shortly after, a worker who does car detailing was nice enough to grab my rental car keys, and he told me that he would return the keys to the ladies at the Lanai Car Rental agency. Phew! Of course when I get to the airport, and was trying to check in at the gate through the TSA line, I get frantic calls, & emails from the lady that worked at the Lanai Car Rental agency (about the car keys, go figure). Of course I called her back & gave her all the info. about where the car keys were. I know this rental car business is fairly new, and I suspect they are still trying to work out a few kinks. Hopefully they will at least add a car key drop box to alleviate any car return issues should they decide to step out for a little while.

Thankfully when it was time for our day trip, all of the sites were fully accessible. We packed in a full day visiting Garden of the Gods, Shipwreck Beach, Lanai Cat Sanctuary, Hulopoe Bay and hiking the Pu'upehe Trail. We started with breakfast at Blue Ginger and later visited the 50s themed diner in the new bowling center for afternoon ice cream. The Jeep was quite new, very clean, with CarPlay, and everything was in good working order. I highly recommend downloading offline maps for navigating Lanai, as there is barely a bar of cell service, even in town. We never actually had to use 4WD for the Jeep, but the height clearance sure did help us on some of the rough dirt roads to some of the sites (places you'd never want to take a regular car). Jim gave us a thorough explanation and tips for visiting the sites when we arrived on the morning shuttle to pickup the Jeep (text the shuttle company ahead of time to reserve your spot at the ferry harbor). There was a laminated map inside the Jeep for us to take with us for the day. Process was smooth. Would rent from Cheap Jeeps again if visiting Lanai. Mahalo!

Since I was traveling solo with a 3- and 6-year-old, I really wanted the pickup experience to be as painless as possible, and Makoa delivered exactly that. On the day of arrival, I received a link with clear instructions. I literally walked out of baggage claim, crossed the street, followed the signs and map, and BOOM! -- the car was right there waiting for us. The car I received was exactly what I booked. The AC was strong, and the tank was full. The map was very easy to use. It was oriented correctly, so you can simply hold your phone upright, walk in the direction shown, and find everything clearly marked. One tip: remember to look UP for the letters marking each parking row. A couple of helpful tips for future renters: - Before returning the car, go to Safeway Fuel if you want to avoid battling the long lines at Costco gas. It's also a straight shot to the airport from there. - When returning to the airport, use "OGG long term / short term parking" in Google Maps. Do not follow the "rental car return" road signs, because those lead to the big rental car companies instead. The return process was also very easy. You just upload a photo of where the car is parked and where you placed the parking ticket, and you're done. I would absolutely use Makoa again the next time we're in Maui.
