Other than the prices and Wilber Shirley's absence, it really hadn't changed much in the past 20 years. The decor is "1960s eastern NC BBQ restaurant", which adds to the appeal. Service was friendly and attentive. Our drinks never went empty during our meal. The owner also stopped by to check on us as well. Our server brought us a small basket of hushpuppies, clearly just out of the fryer. While hot, the recipe had not changed over the years and were just as bland as always. Accompanying the hushpuppies was a small serving of some sort of sauce; it didn't had much flavor but I think it was supposed to be butter or at least buttery. My dining companion got the quarter-rack rib special. The ribs were meaty, very flavorful, and tender. They were good enough that the accompanying barbecue sauce really detracted from the ribs. The potato salad was as good as ever. The serving included 4 ribs for $12.50, which I thought was a very good value. I had my standard, the Pork Plate with slaw and potato salad. The serving of chopped pork was generous, but was too dry and over seasoned for my taste. The slaw was fine but unexceptional. The $12.56 price on the menu was a reasonable value, however after we paid we found out that we were charged $13.50. It turns out that the printed menus Wilber's provides in the restaurant don't reflect their latest prices on Toast. Our server did not mention anything about price discrepancies. The difference in prices doesn't seem like they are just rolling in the sales tax to the orders either. This is absolutely unacceptable and reflects a huge failure in judgement by the management and owner. Shame on you. All in all, our experience rates a four-star review. However, when taking the price discrepancies into account, Wilber's earns a 3-star review and that is generous. Restaurants need to accurately advertise their prices to their Customers, whether dining in or getting take out.

There was a very real risk of wasting an entire day. Thankfully, Skylight Inn delivered in a big way. First, this is the kind of place that attracts everyone: police officers, construction workers, families, businesspeople in suits, and that's just on a weekday. That's always a good sign and something I love to see. Their whole hog Eastern North Carolina barbecue was absolutely worth the effort. It was incredibly flavorful and packed with texture. The crispy skin is expertly mixed throughout the meat, alongside moist pork and just enough rendered fat to create a perfect balance. Every bite had something different going on. The sweet tea was excellent, the slaw was solid, and the picnic-style potato salad hit the spot. The cornbread, however, deserves special mention. Unlike what most people think of as cornbread today, Skylight's version is made with only stone-ground cornmeal, water, salt, and pork drippings. It's dense, chewy, and rustic. No wheat flour, no sugar, and no fluffy crumb. It may not be everyone's favorite, but it's a fascinating piece of barbecue history, and I respect that they're still making it the traditional way. I came. I saw. I ate. Then I bought three pounds to go and grabbed a T-shirt on my way out. That's about as strong an endorsement as I can give. PS.....Walking the grounds is fun as well.

We've driven by this place numerous times and decided on a whim to give it a try…read more Right out of the gate, the word "barbecue" is in their name yet there wasn't so much as a hint of wood smoke in the air outside nor the building. Counter order service with an eye level chalkboard menu was nice. The decor is a little kitshy and in terms of cleanliness, I've been in worse interstate restaurants. I opted for the fried chicken with cabbage and tater salad. The young guy that took the order was clean cut, well mannered and polite. We were given a number and seated ourselves at a window seat. On each of the tables were a bottle of Texas Pete, napkins, an unknown BBQ sauce that tasted like Sweet Baby Rays and a pepper shaker. No salt. The window and windowsills had plenty of evidence hygienic practices weren't their strong suit: Remnants of what appeared to be days-old hush puppies, pulled pork and perhaps green beans (?) were visible along the window sills and the bench seats were long past their prime which made the mere time someone had invested into the wall decor and cosmetics perplexing. It was very brief observation our food appeared via a very friendly young lady. ...In styrofoam containers with plastic utensils. Mildly reassuring the same people responsible for the dining room's cleanliness weren't also responsible for washing actual dishes and silverware. Being a Southerner, I could see the cabbage had not been seasoned with anything - Not so much a speckle of pepper nor an onion sliver. Forget a hint of fat back, hog jawl, or even a bacon grease sheen - So I asked for vinegar. Our server gave the option of regular vinegar or pepper vinegar, I chose the pepper and she returned with such rapidly. White vinegar with a pinch of red pepper flakes in a pre-portioned plastic container. Consequently, I will say the cabbage was very much so plain boiled cabbage and let me know this place isn't doing anything with whole hogs. Next up, the tater salad. It was more so tater bits, not actual cubes of boiled taters - with sugar(?), some scant flakes - Yes, flakes! - of red onion, a whisper of an egg yolk and definitely not Duke's or Blue Plate Mayo. No celery, no pickles, no identifiable parts it was just cold mashed potatoes covered in a runny egg/maybe knock off Miracle Whip and cheap mayo blend and takes the award for being the absolute worst "potato salad" I have ever eaten. Noticing all the nods to Christ and Jesus being Lord and Savior all I could think was, "Amen. I hope this doesn't make me sick." The fried chicken? Straight outta a US Foods or Sysco wholesaler. Really strange considering it's an unobstructed easy WALK to the adjacent Food Lion where someone could buy lard, chicken, flour and seasonings to do up some yard bird. It was clearly nothing battered there in house and the nail in the coffin was those hush puppies. Those tasted like a Temu version of hush puppies someone would fry up after frying fish with an odd mix of House of Autry breading with sugar added. The service was great. And a lot of effort was placed into the walls. The food was unfit for a nursing home picnic and in preparing for the rapture Stormin Norman's would not be a place I'd recommend for a potential Last Supper. May Jesus take your wheel to a different restaurant.

URGENT MESSAGE: Kings Barbeque on Highway 70 in Kinston, NC…read more We had the most awful, disgusting and disrespectful experience at Kings Barbeque in Kinston, NC. What in the world is going on in NC? I ordered my meal and it was not hot and the ribs tasted old. I asked the server for a hot and fresh meal. She took it back and the next thing I know, a white man came to our table, he yelled at me and berated me. He told me "your food is hot", it is at 140 degree temperature"; and while walking away from the table, he yelled across the room and said "you are the only person in here that has a problem with the food". He then proceeded to taste the food on my plate and made one of the female black servers taste it to confirm that it was hot. Well, what happened next should be no surprise to anyone that knows my husband. He asked loudly to see the manager and was informed that that the white man who was at the table was the owner. My husband told him that he was disrespectful to me and that it was unnecessary and talked to him the way he talked to me. The owner told us "the customer is not always right". By that time, Ira was at the kitchen door and the unhinged owner got in Ira's space and Ira told him if he touched him, it would be a problem. He backed up and began mocking Ira because he couldn't handle Irra standing up to him. The manager tried to scare us off by saying that he was going to call the police which he did. He told the police that Ira was trying to physically assualt him which was a lie. We waited for the police to arrive and while they were talking to us, the owner came outside trying to flex again stated he wanted us banned from coming to the restaurant. I can not make this up! The rude, unprofessional and disgusting behavior was extreme and uncalled for. We will NEVER patronize Kings Barbeque ever again! We are how we allow people to treat us! It appeared that the owner has never or rarely had black man challenge his behavior. He was too comfortable with talking to us as black people like he was our "master". I think he will think twice about how he handles the next black person. I'm also sure that situation will be the talk of the town. The other patrons, who also happened to be white, were shaking their heads in disbelief at his behavior and confirmed to the police our story. We are headed back home to Maryland. Praying for safe travels! Whew! #boycott #Disquisting #whiteprivelegeonstage
