I stopped at the Aamco @316 Orange AV because my battery dash light had come on while traveling -- it went off but an auto parts place indicated I needed a starter, but had only checked my battery. Service manager JT Loyd at Aamco checked the codes and was familiar with my RAM Promaster. Not only did he find nothing wrong, but he put my mind at rest, proposed a reason it "could" have come on (then went off) and told me about an Aamco where I was headed a few days away if I needed it. Two years, 130,000 miles and 44 states ago, I began living full time in my 19-foot Skoolie named Bubba. The transmission was on its way out; it was a repair I was expecting. I drove to Roanoke, Virginia, where I had a friend to stay with, while the rebuild was done. I took Bubba to Roanoke Transmission at 316 Orange Street; a decision which I lived to and continue-- to regret. In a nutshell: I dropped Bubba the Bus off on Monday, September 28th, and picked him up Wednesday, September 30th. I phoned on Friday, October 2, advising that Bubba wasn't working any better. I had no reverse and could only occasionally find a gear. Most of the time, I sat at traffic lights and stop signs, in a sea of angry horns, hazard lights flashing, gas pedal pushed to the floor, my bus refusing to move. I called AAMCO and explained that I had a work trip in New York City, which I would take the train to, and upon my return, bring Bubba back for evaluation. On Monday, I returned Bubba the Bus to Roanoke Transmission, and was told they were too busy to put it on the rack and recommended I find another shop---one that was less busy, because 'the transmission was fine'. $400.00 later, Peters Creek Automotive, advised me that the transmission was not working properly. Wednesday, found me at Roanoke Transmission again, this time being told that the parts needed time to acclimate to the cold weather. They assured me the transmission was fine and that I would 'get used to it. Was it because I am a female? Was it because I'm over 50? Was it a Southern thing? Would they have talked to my dad like that? What was obvious? They were not going to help me. They were not going to honor their warranty; they were not going to be ethical. I began my trip to Nashville. Surprisingly, the bus broke down 35 miles later, out of Christiansburg, Virginia. For a mere $896.00, I was towed and 'temporary' repairs to get me down the road were attempted. That road ended 135 miles later in Kingsford, Tennessee. I wasn't surprised. The Christiansburg mechanics had told me the 'transmission was trashed'. I had no reverse and only the occasional gear. Four days later, via mobile mechanics and towing, I made it the 99 miles to Knoxville, Tennessee, Knucklebusters AAMCO. They pulled the tranny pan, which showered ink-like fluid and steel sawdust, which was once my transmission. My bus was disabled and they had to keep it in the shop. Fact: when your home is a bus, and you don't have that bus; you are homeless. Facing the prospect of being homeless in a town, where I knew no-one; I phoned AAMCO Roanoke to ask if they could/would make any concession towards my hotel room, the cost of the transmission, etc...By this point, you know the answer to that question. I phoned AAMCO Corporate, with the same results. The Knoxville AAMCO boys were amazing, offering solutions and suggestions in the interest of expediency and helping me stay off the streets. Of course Roanoke AAMCO would go for none of these things. TEN days later, the Knoxville boys DROVE 1/2 way to Roanoke to pick up the newly rebuilt transmission, bring it back and install it. In the end, due to AAMCO Knoxville, I don't believe it's a 'southern thing' after all; I believe it's a matter of choosing to behave ethically or not. P.S. This is the worst shop I have ever experienced. I requested a trans flush and filter change. Did I get that?? NO. I got a pan drop and filter change. They told me it would be done by 12 noon. 5pm ... I requested to talk to the manager when I picked up my vehicle the next day and the tech got mad, threw my keys at me and told me to get the hell out. I had a great experience. I called all of the shops in my area asking for an estimate for a worst case scenario for a brake job. They came in at the lowest price, and when the job was done, they were only off by about $34 due to unforeseen things that had to be taken care of. They are very professional, and they put the customer first. They are now the only people I will trust my companies vehicles with. read more

AVOID THIS PLACE!! Had a friend's car catch fire after transmission work done here. fire started from bottom of car and then it spread. we contacted the local fire department and they came out and put the fire out and confirmed it started from the trans. he had car towed back to see if they would cover it and they claimed it started from the radio when there where 5 witnesses see the fire start from the bottom of the car and fire marshall confirmed it was from the trans. So what does a radio wire have to do with a transmission when the radio didn't even burn up? They are frauds and did a terrible job and does not want to admit it but it's in the fire report and tow report and this situation will be settled! read more

I went to aamco to have my transmission rebuilt spent$2000 and a extra $500 for a extended warranty 3year36,000 since then I have had 4 transmissions rebuilt by three different aamco's transmissions due to the fact that I do not live in Roanoke VA car warranties do not cover towing which I understand so I had to go to the closest aamco since I could not afford a 2 and 1/2 hour tow bill car transmission seems to be the lasting about 6 to 7 months my truck is a daily driver I do not tow or mud bog or drive it rough now transmission is not shifting correct again now I'm 4000 miles out of warranty. Now on number 5 transmissions with in 3years AAMCO transmission of Roanoke told me to bring it back to them since they were in the original builders to see what they can do could not guarantee anything they had my truck for 2 and 1/2 Weeks and told me that the last shop messed up transmission lines and pan gasket was leaking it's only been six and a half months since aamco rebuilt it for the 4th time drove 2 1/2 hours to pick up my truck the next morning was leaving to go to Raleigh NC and felt that is still was not shifting right my ride is already left to go back home and I was heading in the other direction for a couple of weeks I am a mechanic with 30 years of experience but do not rebuild transmissions I worked for AAMCO transmission in my early days for 4 years so I do know my way around transmissions talked to the technician from aamco and he informed me that it was a shift solenoid is only thing that works the overdrive so when I got to Raleigh I bought a shift solenoid and install it myself as I was doing that I found that there repair jobs really shotty something that you would not think would come from a shop of that magnitude when I confronted the manager about work and had pictures to back what I'm talkin about. he tried to tell me they didn't repair it at that spot that was at a different location of the transmission lines that was the only two spots that was repaired on the whole line and I sent him pictures showing and have not heard from him like he told me he would call me when he received the pictures I feel that they lied to me and I have had nothing but major problems with AAMCO transmission we're not they have vehicles back to them and will not recommend them for any kind of work so please think twice before you spend your hard-earned money I am the owner and name is David Leveille read more

UPDATE: POLICE REPORT FILED...In attention to the repair nightmare I detail below, approx $300 in personal property was taken from my vehicle while it was in their custody. I have filed a police report & the case is currently under investigation. I took my '02 Trooper to my regular transmission guy. He told me it was going to be ~$4,000 to fix. We both agreed it wasn't worth putting $4K into a 13 year-old car. On the advice of a friend, took it to the AAMCO station on Orange Avenue in Roanoke Virginia for a second opinion. I told them what my regular mechanic said, and the manager at AAMCO - real tall guy...Dave, I think - agreed that it wasn't worth putting $4K into it. But I left the vehicle at AAMCO so they could test drive it and give me an estimate. The manager called me that morning with (reasonably) good news. He said he knew exactly what the problem was and he could repair it for ~$2,000. I authorized the work, even though $2K was STILL a lot of $$$ into a 13 year-old car. Later that day the manager called me back and upped my bill to almost $4,000! Nearly DOUBLE his original estimate! (And remember...that's the figure that my original mechanic gave me and the AAMCO manager himself agreed wasn't worth it.) When I told AAMCO I didn't want to put $4K into the repair, he told me I'd have to have it towed off their lot because they'd already taken everything apart and couldn't put it back together again. Keep in mind...I dropped off a DRIVEABLE vehicle for an estimate. And in return they told me to pay ~$4,000 or come tow the vehicle away! When I asked to speak with the owner (Mary Casey), the manager replied, "She's aware of the situation. She'll give you a call if she wants to speak with you." Seriously? SERIOUSLY?!? She'll call me if she feels like it?!? What kind of answer is that?!? And I still haven't heard from her. I'm disgusted by their level of service. Use DJ's Transmission in Roanoke instead.
