I can't say enough good things about Slattery Contracting or Mike Slattery. Quite a few years ago,…read morefor reasons too complicated to get into here, I had to completely tear down and rebuild my house. I got several estimates, and Slattery Contracting's was the highest. Something in my gut told me to go with them anyway, and I thank my lucky stars that I made that decision. There are a bazillion reasons why I recommend this company, but here's a few highlights: 1. First and most important -- Mike Slattery is honest, trustworthy, and reliable. 2. Mike's crew does one job at a time. And they are so organized, they know before the build even starts what each day will entail. This means that before they start, they've lined up all the subcontractors -- electrical, plumbing, etc. Absolutely PRICELESS because it means there's never a "down day" when no work is happening. As a result, my house was demolished and rebuilt in a matter of less than three months! 3. The work done by Slattery Contracting is impeccable. I have quite a few friends who are in the construction business, as well as in other related fields (engineering, architecture, etc.) and every single one of them was beyond impressed with the quality of construction in my house. Additionally, during the build, even though nobody was living in my house, the place was spotlessly clean -- I would go poke around at night, and the raw, unbuilt house was broom swept, and everything was neatly put away. 4. When things go wrong, as they occasionally do, Mike makes it right, even at his own expense. 5. Eight years after my build, I had a very minor issue that was the result of the passage of time, not the result of anything that had been done incorrectly. Mike still came back and fixed the issue, even though it wasn't his responsibility. Who does that these days?? MIKE. 6. Mike's crew is clean, respectful, and dedicated to doing the best job possible. I've joked with Mike many times that I hired him primarily because he came to give me an estimate dressed neatly in a Slattery Contracting shirt (a couple of other builders showed up in torn jeans and dirty tee shirts), both looking and smelling clean. That's not why I hired him, of course, but it said a lot about who he is and how he conducts his business. 7. I was also impressed that Mike gave me a written estimate with a breakdown of every single aspect of the job, and the associated costs, both for materials and for labor. (One contractor I met with called me two weeks after he visited, and said, "Well, I guess I can do it for somewhere around $XXX,XXX." I mean, seriously? That's an estimate? Hell no. I want it in writing!) Anyway, I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. Yes, Slattery Contracting might come in slightly higher than other estimates. Yes, they are worth EVERY SINGLE DOLLAR. Mike made a completely horrible situation tolerable, and many years later, I still love my house -- a house that has no construction issues, a house that is safe and beautiful!

I contacted Michael to begin the process of designing and building a porch on our home. He came to look at the property, took a copy of our survey and said he would contact us with some estimates and bring back material samples. It has now been over three weeks. I have texted him, emailed him and called his office. No contact from him or his office in return. For a businessman to claim he is so reliable, and trustworthy, yet not want to respond to customers is false representation. It's really too bad. He seemed to have great vision and enthusiasm. Brand New Update -- shortly after posting my initial review, Michael contacted me with a better than expected proposal. We were a little gun shy but Michael convinced us the lack of communication was a reflection of his commitment to other projects, not how he does business. He event sweetened the porch proposal by throwing in the electrics to fans on the porch. We went with him and the experience could not have been better. He handled all of the permits and approvals. His team was prompt, friendly, and attentive. He was open to suggestions and worked with us every step of the way. The porch was built in two weeks and has transformed our home. Highly recommend in all ways.

The material used was thick and provided substantial covering for all size cracks. The skill JR used to cover the driveway was exceptional....for example there were clear clean edges, especially between the driveway and cement walks. Asphalt quoted us $4500 for asphalt repair and slurry seal coating of the driveway -- all work backed with a two-year warranty. They sent one man - the owner -- to do the job. We paid on May 26. We told the owner that at least three large areas (at least 30 square feet) of major cracks remained. On July 13 he told us he wanted to let the driveway "settle" a few months, but promised he would fix it before cold weather set in. That was the last we heard from J.R. Asphalt. We called, texted, and e-mailed the owner again on August 10, September 5, and October 1, but we got no response and nothing fixed. By the way the State of N.J. says J.R. Asphalt has been operating without a business license since July 2016.

They took the time to address the edges, prep the surface properly, and apply a brush/squeegee sealcoat that looks fantastic -- clean lines, even coverage, and a finish that really stands out. What impressed me most was the pride they take in their work and the integrity they bring to the job. It's clear they stand behind what they do and genuinely care about the final result. They showed up when they said they would, explained everything clearly, and made sure the driveway was done right. The end result speaks for itself. The driveway looks great, and the quality of the work is obvious. I highly recommend JP Masonry & Paving for anyone looking for reliable, skilled, and trustworthy driveway or paving work.

David was great and patient the entire way through the process. Answered all my questions, concerns, worked around other projects, etc. i never had a reason to think he isn't the right guy for the job, heck, he may still be if I ever learn the backstory. The issue is, I cant get in touch with him now that I am having a slight issue with the driveway. One, that will only get worst if not fixed, I have called numerous times and sent at least 5 messages via Angie's List since roughly July 3rd. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt (sick, out of the country, on vacation, busy season, etc). However, it is almost going on a month and I'm stuck wondering how to proceed as he hasn't responded. Even other contractors dont have anything bad to say about him, but do suggest the driveway wasn't compacted with a "heavy enough" roller. Thus, the cause of the slight indentations in the driveway (have gotten worst since originally typing this). The entire point of paving my driveway was to get rid of those and much, much worst damage that the driveway had. Everything else is great - pitches good, survived the scaring, no damage to my new fence or patio pavers, WAS (before he got all my money) a great communicator, started/finished on time. I am hoping you see this review and resolve the issue so I can leave the review I was going to originally leave (all great comments). Anyone else reading this, take it for what it is...maybe something else is going on that is more important than work right now..who knows.. I just hope the one year warranty is honored. part 2) I changed my review to F because I have been waiting for over a month and I now know the company is active and still around. I have simply been ignored and what appears to be ripped off. All of American Paving Company jobs come with a warranty and mine is not being honored. I expected better from a company that has been around for 60 years and initially seemed very legitimate. thanks for ripping me off and not honoring your work. very unprofessional and I will be reporting this issue to the state and town. This is why I suggest people don't pay contractors with a check, which is unfortunately only what this company takes. I felt comfortable enoaugh paying via this way because of his previous great reviews. Now, the only recourse is small claims court and the attorney generals office. all emails, phone calls and fax messages ignored since July 3rd. It is now August 25th, 2019. To make matters worst you redid a driveway 8 houses down from me and still didn't stop by or leave a note. You probably got the business from the sign you left at our house. I hope you sleep well at night knowing you screwed me and my family out of $3500.. .so much for my 7 year old having a smooth driveway to play basketball on, which is half of the reason I fixed the driveway. You should be ashamed.
