I called and spoke with James Nov. 6; we arranged to have a handyman to my home at 10am Nov. 11. I needed to repair my fireplace, a roof fascia and a door handle. Justin didn't arrive until 10:30ish am Monday, took a few photos and notes, and left. I have tried to contact them to understand what the next step is, and left a VM on Friday Nov. 22, but as of today (Nov 24) I still haven't heard. I'm not sure what happened, I have to call another handyman over 3 weeks after I expected to. I have since fixed my fireplace myself and am worried the weather will delay fixing the extrior of my house. Please, look elsewhere for handyman service for your own sake. read more

I had a gutter issue that was causing water to leak behind my siding. The wood was becoming soft and water logged, and I reached out for help to repair the siding. James the owner was great. We needed a wall mudded and textured. The part was a small 4' and a vertical between two sheet rock. Our son was there with him during the job timing him with his stop watch on his phone. The guy was there 50 minutes and charged for 2 1/2 hours. He wouldn't let our son see the receipt until he paid him using the virus as an excuse. He was going to hand it to him anyways, so he was basically using that as an excuse. Then he kept our house key. We gave it to him to borrow in case son didn't get there on time. Son was there way before the guy was. He's supposedly returning key today. We will see if he does. We will never use this company ever again. read more

This is the Yelp review that will not die. Okay, so here's the Reader's Digest version (or, for true gluttons for punishment, feel free to read the whole review history). About three years ago, we found A1 Handyman on Yelp and hired them to do a few repairs for us. Long story short, we had a bad experience and considering that I'd found them through Yelp, I left a poor review. This led to the then-owner of the business contacting me several times to try and get me to take it down. After all his pressure, I finally Googled him and discovered some pretty disturbing things in his past. I felt reaffirmed in my one-star review and in my warning to others to do their homework before hiring this business. Flash forward to today. I was contacted by the new owner of the business. Apparently the former owner is deceased and his partner, who also had a long and troubling past, is no longer with the business. He asked me to reread my review and consider if it was still fair. I've done that. I've spent some time thinking about it, and here's what I have to say today. I don't feel I should remove my review; it is a truthful accounting of what happened and I haven't hired them again to have any new experiences to rate. That said, I certainly don't want to hurt an innocent person's prospects. The new owner cares enough about his reputation to try and fix it, so that could be a good sign. While I can't speak to the quality of his work or give him my endorsement, I don't want to stand in his way. My recommendation, for him or ANY laborer you look to bring into your home, is to do your own research. Google is definitely your friend. I had a bad experience with A1, but with a different owner...who knows? Maybe they'll be awesome. It's up to you to decide if you want to give them a chance. read more

Where do I begin? I contacted them to replace a tile backsplash in our kitchen and 2 bathrooms. We just bought our first home and this was our first time in hiring someone to do work on our house. I met with Sean at our home April 12th. He looked everything over, took his measurements and gave me the quote for the work. I said sounds good, he wrote out what supplies we needed to purchase and the amount of tile and we would see him to start work the following Monday, April 15th. He did demo day 1 and had to replace all the Sheetrock in the kitchen and bathrooms. So far so good, good communication from Sean. This all changed once the tile was getting done in the kitchen. We noticed crooked tile, sloppy lines, the trim wasn't looking nice, damage to the walls and just messes everywhere. We contacted James the owner, sent pictures, and were met with a very defensive tone and told us "it's a process." Sorry but crooked tile and broken pieces is not a process. Day 3, Sean never shows up. It wasn't until after 3 that we heard back from Sean, only because my husband called Sean and James to find out why he didn't show up. Apparently he was sick, didn't call or text to let us know. Sean shows up day 4, claims to be fixing the issues we pointed out. Only to arrive home to find more and more issues. It was only getting worse. Called and sent James more pictures. His response "well I didn't know we were doing 2 bathrooms. You guys are getting a great price for this job". First of all we weren't looking for the "best price". We never tried to negotiate with them, they quoted us, so why he even felt the need to say that is beyond me. We finally said enough, we did not trust them to come back and complete the job to the degree it should be done. We are now having to start all over again. Demo all the tile Sean had done, redo the Sheetrock, and re tile. After several new contractors came thru I am confident that our expectations were not unrealistic. That his messy and unprofessional work areas is not the industry standard, and his tile work was atrocious. Sean claims he didn't feel good which is why his work was not 100% and that we pressured him in getting it done quickly. This is not the case at all. He gave us his timeline, I have the text messages where he tells me when he would be done with the work. Not one message is from me telling him to hurry up. It was excuse after excuse. Sean laughed when I told him that this was so hurtful that he took such little care and pride in our home and his work. He told me, "we're going to go ahead and walk away from his job and i won't charge you for the labor." What a joke of course you're not and I asked him if he would have done this same kind of terrible work in his own home. I told him I expect to be reimbursed for all the material and now for the demo that needs to take place to fix all his terrible work. He said, my boss isn't going to give you any money. I am appalled by the unprofessionalism we received from Sean and even worse from the owner James. Not once did James offer to come and see Sean's work in person. I have posted many pictures, be the judge yourself. None of these backsplashes had been grouted. Biggest disappointment I have ever experienced. Been meaning to write this review for a week now. First, the owner, James, was very responsive to my request and provided a very reasonable price for the drywall patch work I needed. Then, Lyle came out to our house in Meridian to do the drywall repair. We had 9 holes that needed patching. One of the rooms needing drywall repair had a very unique texture on the ceiling where some of the holes were. I was concerned matching that texture would be very difficult to do and I wasn't confident it would look great. Lyle proved me wrong. I can hardly tell there were holes there! He also went above and beyond and patched up a large chip in the drywall on the bullnose edge of a doorway, and I hadn't even asked him to do it! He was so great. He was a very nice, personable guy with a great attitude. He did a quality job quickly and professionally, AND he did a great job cleaning up afterwards! I don't have experience using A1's other services, but for drywall repair these are your guys! Ask for Lyle! I am not a handy guy around the house or for our car. It is something that I readily admit and don't cover up. We all have our strengths and opportunities and this is an opportunity area for me. There exists this brave unknown in regards to handymen to do jobs in and around the house. So with a leap of faith and some review checking on Yelp, I had my father call A1 Handyman for a leaky outdoor facet. With it being a late Friday afternoon, I thought that we'll get a voice mail or an appointment next week. My dad bounced into my office and said that Dino and the team would be here in about 30 mins. Wow. Impressed. Dino and the team came and unfortunately we had to have the guys crawl under the house to diagnose the leaky outdoor facet. We huddled around the facet and discussed the options. I know, most of you are thinking, " here's where they get you to turn over the wallet " Nothing is further from the truth. A1 handyman and their guys are more concerned about doing what's right for the best price. We could have decided to fix the pipe under the house, which thanks to the builders 11 years ago is an in a difficult location or we could simply cap it off completely. The price for either was very affordable. We decided to cap the pipe underneath since we use that facet outdoors maybe two or three times a year to fill the kiddie pool for our husky. I would totally recommend A1 handyman for jobs around and outside the house that can't be tackled by yourself. I have been working with A1 and Jeff for over 6 months now and I can only say great things. Jeff is extremely reliable and responsive. I have had a plumbing emergency and Jeff made it to my home within 5 minutes while a clogged drain backed water up into my home. Jeff stopped the water and did a clean up so fast (4 inches deep) that nothing was even damaged! He had handled electrical, plumbing, general maintenance, and just about everything else we need. I called to schedule a service and we agreed on a date/time 2 days later. 30 minutes after the agreed time, get a call that the service rep is running late. Okayyyy. Another hour or so later, the rep calls and says last job "beat him up" so he suggested coming by to give a firm quote. I told him I was satisfied with the range quote I had but willing to reschedule. So today- less than 10" prior to the time HE suggested, he called and was unable to bring my address up. I gave it again along with some directions. I know I live 15-20" from the office where he claimed to be. An hour later, still not here so I left the house. I tried to call office to cancel- no answer. He called my brother at my house and said he "couldn't locate my street". Uh- google maps? Call again before over an hour late? We cancelled! I'm a new Idahoan, just moving here from California 2 weeks ago. I know not a soul to get references from and rather than learn the hard way I resort to Yelp (as I always have in the past) to find the best. That's how I found Jeff (A1 Handyman). With these sterling reviews, how could I not call him? Anyway, the prior owners didn't leave my new home in the greatest condition. I had a bathroom light switch making a shorting noise, a running toilet, and a busted security bar. Jeff answered his phone right away, told me that he could be there in 2 hours, arrived as he said he would. The bathroom switch turned out to be a spark (yikes). He replaced that, adjusted the toilet and repaired the security bar within an hour. We called A1 in desperate need of someone coming to our home that day. We had started installing a fan on our own and it was not working out! He answered and came that evening (we called at 3:30pm on a Sunday! and he still came that day!) He got it taken care of for a pretty competitive price (Lowes had quoted us the same price when we bought the fans but couldn't schedule it for several days out) We had him come back later in the week to put in another fan, same great job. We told him about a buzzing noise (it sounded like a motor or something) in the fan in the first room. He took a look and found the motor wasn't good (factory style defect, not installation issue) so we took it back to Lowes and got a new one, he came back a third time free of charge and installed the new motor. This guy (the owner btw) was great. He also called before he came and was on time every time (seriously appreciate that with a small child, planning is a good thing around here) We will hire him again anytime we need anything done.
