He was honest and it's a family owned company. He saved me about $800 A1 would do better to be transparent with prices. They could not tell me the prices until the guy called his "boss." Watch your wallet! Initial quote for new garage spring was way over $1,000 (Just the spring) with some bs about my garage door being extra heavy. I balked and said I would get another quote. He managed to get the price down to $680 after "talking to his manager". I reluctantly agreed even though I still felt it was a ripoff. After his inspection, which I paid extra for, he proceeded to the high pressure up sell for the rest of the other parts (cables and bearings) that probably came standard in the kit that that I had already paid for (probably retails for less than $150). Right back up past $1000! He was visibly angry when I said no and put all the old parts back on out of spite. Proceeded to rudely lecture me about how grateful I should be to pay such huge markup prices because he was a master senior garage tech. I had to leave my wife to talk to him alone because I was getting angry and apparently he tried to sell her over $4000 for a new door because ours was so busted and dangerous. P.S. The experience felt more like a high-pressure sales pitch than a repair. By the time the technician left, I had been charged over $2,200. Instead of a full quote upfront, I was provided pricing one item at a time as he went along. After the springs, it was cables, then bearings, then rollers, and finally door struts. When I questioned if the struts were actually required, I was told stories about garage doors buckling or failing due to stress and weight. He also made statements that my failure to regularly lubricate the parts could be the reason for these failure points--which felt like a guilt tactic, especially since the door is only 8 years old and I've owned garage doors for 20 years with almost no maintenance and zero issues. ​I agreed to the work, but I did feel that if I refused, there might be a problem with the warranty. While the technician never said that to me directly, I felt that the coverage was tied to me following all his recommendations. He also took photos of the barcodes and model numbers on my garage door openers without explaining why; as a homeowner, this was very unsettling as I had no idea if this information could be used to compromise the security of my home. Between that and the five different stickers they plastered around my garage, it felt like my home was being "tagged" for their database. I was even pushed into a $12-$13/month protection plan just to get a 5% discount, which I cancelled. Why would I pay for a plan for all the work he just did? ​Just another part of the manipulation was the review process. The technician stood over me while I filled out the survey and took a photo of my phone screen to prove I gave a 5-star rating. I am not a confrontational person, so I complied at the time, but I have since deleted that review to provide this honest one. Based on my research into industry averages, I was charged double or triple the standard rate for these parts and labor. For over $2,200, I could have purchased a brand-new door. Unfortunately I wasn't present for this exchange and my wife went forward with the estimate without consulting me. She knows me well and knows I would have had reservations given the price. Garage spring broke and contacted 3 companies regarding it. A1 had the quickest availability, so decided to give them a shot. My wife was home for the service, and they advised that they needed to replace the spring and it would cost $1200. Technician stated that it was a heavy duty spring, so we went with it. The repair was completed, and he recommended other repairs on the garage door which were astronomical in price, so we declined. Had the other 2 companies come out and give estimates... both were hundreds/thousands of $$$ cheaper for the spring repair (roughly $500-$600) and other repairs including replacing the garage door. Wish I would have been home when the technician first came out and that I had read all the reviews. All in all, I will never use them again for anything. Installer very pleasant and helped with my remote controller but couldn't get it to work. Apparently Apple Has not updated the IOS and the unit is no longer manufactured. Back to square one. Throughout, the installer's only remedy was to try and sell me a new system at a cost of $2500 which I can get a new operating system including installation for $500 total. We found A1 Garage Door Service to be very good. One of our door springs broke late Friday afternoon on Easter weekend. It was after five o'clock and most businesses were closed. When I called A1 they were taking calls and offered a number of options including an emergency call for the same evening. When technician, Brian Webb, arrived shortly afterward he gave us an estimate for the repair. He also inspected the door and all the attachments and explained why we should consider making some replacements. Brian was efficient and courteous. All I needed was a adjustment so my manual 8 foot door would stay up when opened (It would roll back down). Sent a new guy out he was on the phone getting advise from someone on what to do. I could hear the person on the phone as they talked, advising him on selling me parts I needed (or didn't need) to keep the door from sliding back down. I ended up buying new springs for over $400. Two weeks later door sliding back down after opening. Called them back and they sent 2 more guys out to see the problem. Got a new spring on my daughter's garage, was asked about a worry free club for 155.40, I declined, installer added it any way and after he was there for hours tdurs I signed the contract without reading it and they took another 155.40 out of my account for the club, I called their company headquarters and tried to explain what happened and got nowhere, so I called the Arizona BBB and filed a complaint, I did receive the last 155.40 back in a check, then I was called by a Curtis Johnson and we talked about the original 155.40 to join the club and he told me on 8-12-2025 he would send me a check for the original 155.40 an it should arrive in 10 to 14 business days, still haven't received it nor do I expect to since I retracted my BBB complaint, I would never again use this company with its poor installation crews and the fact they won't give you a paper receipt, there are plenty of good garage door companies in lansing, my advice is to call them before A1 Garage door company. I set up a call for an advertised "garage tune-up". Within 5 minutes of arriving, and without fully inspecting the mechanisms, he said I needed new springs and a new garage door opener. I explained to him that my springs were only a couple years old. He said the previous company installed the wrong springs. One of the reasons I initiated this service call was to have my chain tension adjusted. He said that couldn't be done because it was too "stretched out". He said I needed to replace my garage door opener to correct the problem. The next day I contacted another company. They inspected my springs and opener and said my springs were totally fine. They adjusted the chain tension (they found there was a washer missing, which was causing the chain to sag). They replaced the washer, did further adjustments and said I should get several more years out of my springs and garage door opener, all this with a 90 day guarantee. A1 did not do any of these adjustments. They just tried to sell me something I did not yet need. Beware of this company unless you want to spend a lot of money. read more

Not only are they open, they answered right away and had a tech on his way within 20 minutes. The tech drove all the way out here from Dearborn and had everything he needed to get the job done in his van! He was patient with my family making decisions slowly and worked with us on pricing. Unfortunately, I strongly feel I was taken advantage of. I had one spring break and was pressured into paying just under $1,200 for what I thought was a fairly inexpensive job. I kind of felt I was being taken advantage of in the moment but I was told the prices for parts have skyrocketed because of Covid. I received very standard garage door springs with what I now know is at least 160% markup and that's just the beginning. I was charged 500% markup on two new safety drums and 700% markup on cables and an 800% markup on bearing ends! All of these were sold to me as mandatory replacements after they had taken my garage door apart saying it's a "liability" I felt as if I had no choice! My advice, Call a much smaller operation and ask for prices or a quote before they touch ANYTHING. I'm pretty disappointed in A1. $1200 is a lot for me. Worst company I have ever dealt with in my life! I called them on June 11th to look at getting my garage door replaced. I believe the salesman tried to pull a bait and switch to get me to pay way too much for a new garage door. I feel so foolish now. Luckily, I read my contract and sent in my cancellation notice within the timeframe and I SHOULD be getting my deposit back soon. If not I will be contacting consumer agencies shortly. I have another company replacing my door with something similar for almost $3000 less. Update: 6/18/24--I received a call from an A1 representative today to let me know that they have processed my deposit refund. At the risk of totally embarrassing myself, I want to explain that their sales person came to my home and quoted me $8487 for an insulated door and $5426 for a regular non-insulated door (nothing custom). I told him I would think about it and shortly after that he emailed me an estimate for $7205 for the insulated door and claimed that his manager authorized a deal for me. He also referred to my garage an "emergency exit" in order to speed up the process. The next day I came to my senses and called their competitor who quoted me under $5000 for an insulated door. I've notified the managers at A1 of my experience and their only solution for me is giving me back my deposit I'm entitled to anyway. I'm hoping that it hits before my credit card closes since it's a lot of money and I still have to pay the other company to fix my garage. Huge lesson learned. Prices ranged from $600, 1/2hp model to $1300 3/4hp models with many options. Choose 1/2hp model, which was more than enough for our needs concerning our garage door. This is when things get crazy, we leave him to his job. With opener now down and off the mounts, Tech knocks on the door, we have another issue. Show's me the hardware that the bearings are housed, said they are bad and could fail at any time. I inspected old ones to new ones, not a terrible difference between them, but there's wear. Adding more $$$ to the project. We ok the new ones. Minutes later, another knock , we have another issue, the rollers (10) are not that good, should be replaced. $$$ added, minutes later another knock , cables should be replaced additional $$$. I expressed my concern about the escalating costs, Technician returned remarks, Lowe's/Home Depot don't sell the quality materials that they offer, excuse me, but they do, as well as other retailers that furnish garage door replacement parts. My point of these remarks is, get ESTIMATES/QUOTES. This company is VERY HIGH END, I did ask for a Senior discount (5%) was all that was given, thinking that (10%-15%) would have been better, that's because most companies do (30%) mark up. Offered a $75 off coupon, 4th of July special as well. All said and done now, with coupon and Senior discount, out the door price was just shy of , $2000 GET ESTIMATES ! GET QUOTES ! My elderly mother called A1 for a new garage door. She had backed into the garage the door was ruined. She was embarrassed and didn't tell me until the next day. She explained what happened. I asked her how much are they charging? 3700.00 for a double, non-insulated door. I knew right away that was a crazy price. I contacted a company I've used in the past. I called up and told them what was happening with my garage door. I asked if they did free estimates and was told yes. I made an appointment and was given a time window btween 1-6 pm on a Sunday. I texted to see when they may come around 3pm. I got a response back around 4:30 saying it would be around 4 pm (???-That makes no sense). I get a call at 5:20 saying they are running late and they said I will be called by the driver. I double check to make sure there is no charge, because now I have wasted my day. The dispatcher says there is a charge. I told him I was told there was a free estimate and had him listen to the original recorded call. He verified that is what I was told. I told him I didn't plan on paying if no work was done and the driver was already running late. The driver calls at 6:15 to let me know he can make it until 7:30 (1.5 hours past my time window.) He tells me its $110 just to look at the door. I tell him whats going on and he says I will probably need a new strut and it will be around $330. Then he says that is like putting a bandaid on the door and I should just get a new one! He never even saw the door. I ended up telling him not to come. I hired a family owned company, paid $300 for a strut, came out the next day with a 2 hour window and told me my garage door had plentlt of life left. Do not hire A1 garage door. The technician came out to look at and fix my system the day after I called, which was nice. It was the spring and a new hinge that needed to be replaced. I went with the 5 year spring and it ended up costing over $1000. Then the technician knocked on the door and I went out to find that my opener/motor had broken. Another $600 right then and there. I'm not saying the tech was being dishonest, but the timing of that is kind of curious. He didn't seem too empathetic about it either, just saying that openers can often break after ten years or so. Either way, I've done research and I'm definitely sure you could find a better price elsewhere. I can only blame myself for not doing more research before, but try looking elsewhere. I had an issue with my door in the last week of May. A tech came out and told me I had to replace rollers, struts, and have a complete rebuild of the torsion system. over 1700 dollars. I agreed to have it done This weekend the same problem happened again, center top of door bowed inward. Same problem I called them for in May that cost me over 1700 in repair costs. Same tech came out today, told me I could either replace the door at 7000 dollars or he could do some adjustments to make the door work but I might need to replace the door in the future. They are based out of Arizona. The people are friendly but it feels very corporate run. We were quoted $39 for a service call. Service guy charged us $116.57 and did no work. When I inquired about this price the office said "that was for the tuneup." There was no tune up, he touched nothing. The office then said they would credit $72.02 instead of $77.57 ($5.55) difference. They said "$5.55 is for the tech's gas." Money is not the issue. After requesting a full credit twice (to pay $39 as they quoted), they said they would credit $77.57. They also quoted about $2000 today to repair. When we said we would think about it "if you do it today, it's $1800 and we can finance interest free for a year." We won't be calling them back. read more
