I'm an artist, so everything I wear and own is covered in (dry) paint. I also carry a backpack when running errands or coming to and from the gym. I live close by and walk to downtown. When I spotted the sale outside the store as I was coming from the gym, sweaty and with my backpack for my aforementioned errands, and stopped to look at the outside sale section, one of the workers almost broke a leg running out to see what I was up to, fine I get it--you gotta deal with the potential loss prevention especially outside of the store, no offense taken. However, when I asked her to help me get a price on a pair of unmarked sweats that I wanted (lovely sweats BTW) she would not even look me in the eye and rudely stated the price after looking it up in a tone that I can only say was aggressive....I tried to make some polite small talk--but ....crickets. I decided to buy them.....so I wandered inside and dropped them at the counter as I browsed the inside of the (very small, large closet like) store and noticed that the other counter woman was literally following me around, hard to do in a hallway/one small room store, but she managed to breathe down my neck anyway. I was making polite "I'm not a shoplifter and you're making me uncomfortable" conversation, but it was pretty clear that I didn't fit their physical profile of what a high end shopper should look like with my post workout sweat, gym shoes and dried paint backpack. I felt so uncomfortable I stoped browsing, paid for the sweats and got the hell out. I said "thank you" on my way out to the woman who had helped me outside in the sale area, who didn't even look at me/respond and rolled her eyes at the same time (buuuurrrrn). BTW, I was the only shopper in the store or outside from beginning to end. I think this is a great place to shop if you look like the image that they think is appropriate, but beware if you aren't manicured to the T or are not dressed up to buy your sweats (literally WTF?). Sad that there is this much bias at a t-shirt and sweatpants/jeans store in Burlington, VT. But also kinda funny if it was funny.

Common Deer happens to be one of them. Probably a nightmare to locals, but a pure dream to any and all tourists! I saw nightmare to locals bc locals complain constantly about the types of little stores that are all over their downtown areas. We have quite a few here in downtown Boise. Locals complain constantly about the tourists. Funny how locals everywhere..whether in Burlington or Boise will complain about tourists all while forgetting how much $$ tourists pump into their economies. I absolutely love supporting little stores like this. Small local shops are the absolute best. Sure, prices will ALWAYS be higher, but chances are you will find something at these stores you'll never find at another. If a touristy item...finding a unique is even better. Common Deer is one of those special places. You will certainly find some incredible little things here, Knick Knacks, souvenirs, maple syrup (now that's plentiful all over Vermont haha), candles, etc . I know, they all sound like things in every store like this. I'd like to think that...yes of course, you'll see some repeat things...especially in VT t-shirts, but each store has something the other doesn't. Common Deer is absolutely worth checking out! If you are visiting Burlington, there's a 99.9999% you will go in. It has a very inviting vibe to it. The outside does a great job...drawing you in. You'll love it! Has jewelry and lots of locally made crafts. There's also some things like specialty foods and that kind of stuff. A lot of great ideas for gifts. It's particularly a place to go if looking for something local. They sure have lots of that. Handcrafted items. There's even some food like maple syrup and granola, and that kind of stuff. Maybe kind of expensive, but that's to be expected. The whole selection is local. For sure there's a lot to check out in here. It's got plenty for all types of people. They're closed Tuesdays.

There was a plastic cuff bracelet that wrapped in a knot that caught my eye, but at $33 or $36 dollars it just wasn't worth it. There are some cute hats in the ~$30 range. There were some plush robes available that were proudly displayed as being "Oprah's favorite robe!" Very squishy. Very expensive (about $140 I think). But some people may find it worth it, and if so, Hydrangea Too is where you can find it. Most of the jewelry looks pretty cheap, honestly. There were some interesting pearl necklaces and earrings though but again, overpriced. Lot of charms, horoscope-themed and otherwise. Some scarves, wallets and plush baby toys. In the end though, Hydrangea Too was another store that was more for browsing than actual buying. Having seen what's available, I don't see myself making a point to come here again when I'm in Burlington. Plus points for very friendly service though!

I bought a dress here that seemed flattering even though the straps were way too long. Of course, the girls working that day all assured me it looked gorgeous and would be an easy fix. They recommended a few tailors in the area and suggested I could even try making the adjustments myself, even though I'm not much of a seamstress. Later I went online just to comparison shop (turns out the dress is available elsewhere for cheaper, but not in my size) and in the process realized that I was wearing it entirely wrong...it does a kind of funky wrap thing, which explains the 10" of leftover fabric. If a store is going to charge hundreds of dollars for a dress, shouldn't someone working there know how to display it and help others try it on, or at least pause before recommending hacking the thing to pieces? It seems like they're just on auto-pilot to say "yea, yea, looks great" but don't really know anything about clothes. Which is to be expected at, like, H&M...but not someplace charging these prices!
