All of the goods I browsed look very high-quality (and pretty expensive), so they are marketed more to the serious backcountry campers than the RV and state park campers. Gear Up also sells a number of survivalist books, many of which are about self-defense. After skimming through a few volumes, I realized the target audience is a bit paranoid and a bit practical--folks who want to know how to kill someone with their bare hands (theoretically, I hope). Everybody you read about has been tweaking theirs for months or even years and has a pile of gear built up. The military load bearing system is set up in a 3 day (web gear), 5-7 day (rucksack), and a 14 day (duffle bag/footlocker). It's hard to know where to start, but if you cover all of the basics in a survival situation you will still be much better off than 99% of the people. A Bug Out Bag, (also called a BOB, Get Out of Dodge Bag, GOOD, or 72 Hour Bag) is usually designed to get you out of an emergency situation and allow you to survive self-contained for up to 3 days. A lot of people plan their Bug Out Bag to sustain them for much longer than that, but there is always a limit to what you can carry on your back and a 3 day target is a good place to start. I'd thought forever that these would not all be the same but I was proven wrong the night we visited this one. It seems like they are all built with similar layouts. The clothes, the outdoor equipment, firearms, ammunition, archery nuts and candy, jams and now they appear to have smoker and bbq cooking equipment, wood chips, and rubs&bbq sauce. It's all kind of expensive to me but honestly, I'm not an outdoorsman but my wife was looking for a jacket as a gift. Always dun to walk in and see all the taxidermy work and especially the fish tank.
