This shack is an excellent value with our tandem 2 hour rental being roughly $30. You can paddle out to the sand dunes which are roughly 15-45mins away depending on strength & wind. Very fun trek to get a unique "deserted island" feeling with the softest sand I've ever walked on. read more

The staff were great, they have the kayaks you sit in which is so much better than those ocean sit on top kayaks that are usually at rental places, and the mechanism that they have for getting in the kayak was really cool because it made getting in the kayak super easy and getting out super easy. The area is always amazing no matter what and this time of year they have a lot of birds and otters and seals and things to see. I would definitely recommend this company. read more

I wanted to be able to leave a 5 star review. I previously had rented from them and had a wonderful experience. Today on Thursday our group of 10 arrived exactly at their posted opening time. There was no staff there when we arrived. We waited 30 minutes and still no staff arrived. The sign at the front says they are open on Thursday at 9. I would like to recommend to whoever owns this business to place a sign on the front gate if they don't plan to open on a particular day. It would also be helpful if they posted a sign if they were going to be late. Today was probably the best tide of the year. They lost hundreds of dollars today because no staff was there. read more

Absolutely fantastic experience. Don't be put off by a long line. They cleared the line in 10 minutes. The staff were ultra-friendly and helpful. This is definitely one of the best kayak departure points because they have a very convenient overhead bar with handles for entering and exiting the kayak. No rolling on and off the dock. Prices are extremely reasonable. Kayak is in good condition. A 2-hour kayak adventure across Morro Bay with a hike across the sand dunes cannot be beat. I'd only been to the main kayak rentals closer to the Morro Bay so I was worried but they did NOT disappoint. The staff was way way friendlier than any of the other places and their location further down the bay offers a unique experience and more exploration. Decided to go kayaking in Morro Bay and found this place online with great reviews. We went on a weekday morning, right as it opened at 9AM and the water was pretty empty, save some local paddleboarders. The staff is super friendly and gave us a lot of tips (shallow areas to avoid, go between the cones, where you might spot otters etc). They offer so many types of equipment for rent. Single and double kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes. They also have waterproof bags for purchase. Prices are great. We got two double kayaks, which is $24/hour. The kayaks were in great condition and everyone who goes into the water got a life jacket. It was actually kind of cold (mid 50s and June gloom) and we didn't really dress for the occasion (flip flops, hoodie, light sweater), but honestly you don't really need to. After paddling for 5 minutes, your body will warm up, so we weren't cold at all. I'd advise you to dress warm, but not too warm if you go in the early morning. The views are great: you can paddle up close to Morro Rock or venture further into Morro Bay and try to spot wildlife. The water is clear and in some areas, really shallow, so make sure you don't get stuck like we did haha. We were lucky enough to see three otters slumbering otters from afar before groups of kayakers came through. We finished around 10:30AM and that's when groups of people started coming in. If you want to enjoy the waters by yourself or without big groups, definitely come early because it will get busy (especially trying to rent or return) around noon. read more

We took a 9am kayaking tour through the Kayak Shack, which includes kayaking in Morro Bay State Park and a walk on sand dunes and a beach. We arrived about 30 minutes early to park and use the restroom, but they don't open the gates until 9am, so we walked around the area for 20 mins. We were fitted for life jackets and given a granola bar and sunscreen was available, which was nice. We were not instructed how to get back in the kayak in the event of capsizing, which we've received on other tours we've taken. The tour includes some narration about birds, otters and the 'pirate ship'. I would have liked more narration and less time on the dunes/beach. We did see a few otters and birds. Unfortunately, the day we went, it was so foggy, we were unable to see Morro Rock. :( After kayaking, we were shown some otter pelts and a few other things of interest back at the shack. My main concern was that the seats in the kayak could have been better -- they seemed like they needed replacing and they weren't adjustable for tension. My husband's back hurt for a week afterwards due to the fact the seats weren't adjustable. (He's over 6') We've taken many kayak tours in different places while on vacation and never encountered seats that were not adjustable and looked worn out like these ones. I felt slightly underwhelmed by the tour, but it was pleasant and a nice way to spend time on the water. Note: There are restrooms near the dock and parking area. Make sure you go before you kayak as there are no other opportunities. Free to park. There's a popular restaurant called Bayside Cafe at the Marina that you may want to try after the tour. (When we were there, the wait was too long, we decided not to stay). read more

This was our first experience kayaking and I was slightly nervous (I have a little fear of the open water), but we were in not directly in the open water so no big waves or fear of tipping. It was so much fun kayaking to the dunes across the way. We stayed out for about 2 hours. Love that they charge by the hour and don't restrict you to a time slot. What a great experience! I showed up right when they opened at 9am in order to rent a single kayak and head out before the estuary became a slew with the tide going out. Two and a half hours of pure kayak bliss! I saw a gathering of great egrets, turkey vultures having a feast on a fish, seals taking a siesta, and two playful otters that ignored me while they romped. The young women who signed me in, got my life jacket and helped me into my kayak were first class. Polite. Professional. Masked. Willing to offer suggestions on which way to head first. We rented two double kayaks last week and again today from the Kayak Shack and had an absolute blast. Last week we kayaked during low tide and today during high tide, so they were very different (but both great) experiences. The people at Kayak Shack were kind and helpful. It took just minutes to get signed up, fitted with life jackets, and in the water. The Kayak Shack is in a wonderful, quiet part of the Morro Bay Estuary, so it's a great spot from which to explore the Sand Spit, the mud flats, and the Bay in general. We had so much fun! read more
