I booked this in advance and it was relatively easy to do so online via the request form on the site. We had a 9am start but easy to get a hold via text if you run late. There is ample free parking right in front of the shack. Put in "A Kayak Shack" in Google Maps and you will have no trouble finding the dock where you need to be. Bathrooms are available by the shack and there are even faucets to wash your feet if you get muddy after the trip. Everything went very well and we all had lots of fun doing this. They provide a lot of equipment, including dry bags, even a blanket to prevent splashes on you, and safety jackets for everyone even if you can't swim. It was clear John and his team are very knowledgeable of the local wildlife and I appreciate the care behind making sure we had a good and safe time. Once arriving to the dunes, we did a hike to the secluded beach and was able to enjoy the view from a much quieter spot. For the picnic, the food was delicious for a picnic. Includes wine and sparkling water. John surprised us with some lovely homemade Blondies. The whole experience doesn't require too much experience and the waters are quite calm so it's perfect for many ages and such a lovely place to be!

We were a small but mighty group of three. I do suggest getting some water shoes and if you have them binoculars. Jenn did a great job preparing us before shoving off. She created a wonderful atmosphere. I can't say enough about her kind leadership and how she taught us about this unique area of California. This tour immerses you in the geological wonders of the bay, history of the area, and its bountiful marine life. On that particular day, we saw very active cormorants, a few herons, egrets, a bald eagle, evidence of mud shrimp, crabs, and a raft of otters taking a snooze. Being outdoors on the water was calming and learning with other curious individuals was invigorating. Thank you Jenn for this experience that gave us many wonderful memories.

Our experience was pretty disappointing. Our camp neighbors were noisy after quiet hours and had…read morelittle consideration for anyone around them. The bathrooms and showers were filthy. There are also no bear boxes available at the camp sites, which was surprising given the fact that we were warned that black bears are active and present within the campgrounds. The showers cost $1 for about five minutes, so it's highly recommended to bring quarters. Unfortunately, the shower area was the worst part of our stay. At one point, there were grown men drinking, smoking, and causing a ruckus inside the men's bathroom. It was filled with cigarette smoke that it basically felt like they were hotboxing the place. Definitely not something you want to deal with when you're just trying to take a shower. Most of the campsites were also noticeably uneven due to the campsites being sloped on an uphill incline. It made setting up more aggravating that it should've been. Considering how much you pay to reserve a campsite here, you would expect the park rangers and staff to do a better job maintaining the facilities and enforcing basic campground rules. Aside from that, kayaking was fun. The lake was nice, but as far as the actual campground, I would not camp here again.

We saw multiple groups of whales lunge feeding, with whales, sea lions, and tons of birds all feeding together. We also saw lots of dolphins and had a chance to cruise alongside them for a while. Our guide, Mark, was fantastic. He clearly knew the whales and their behavior, always kept us informed about what was happening and where to look, and was happy to answer all of our questions. The highlight came when Mark spotted a whale away from where we were watching and decided to head over to check it out--even though we were already seeing some incredible activity. We're so glad he did. Shortly after we got there, the whale breached right in front of our boat! An unforgettable moment that we never would have experienced without Mark's knowledge and instincts. Our original trip had actually been canceled the day before because of bad weather. While that was obviously disappointing, it was completely outside their control, and we really appreciated how they handled it. They added an extra third trip the following day so they could accommodate us. We also brought our three-and-a-half-year-old along, and he had a great time. He was comfortable throughout the trip and really enjoyed the experience. It may not be for every three-and-a-half-year-old, but it definitely worked great for ours! It was the best whale-watching experience our family could have asked for. It truly couldn't have been any better!

As it turns out, all of the harbor seals, and sealions have names. We befriended one named Steve, he is much better at swimming than I am. He also taught me secret techniques to paddling. This one Pelican named Parry got into a barking match with some sealions, which is a fight he wasn't gonna win, let's be honest. Though I was hoping to see an M-A-N-A-T-E-E ... next time! If you're gonna go down on Haley street, where the dogs are easy and the sun is cheap, you never know just who you'll meet, on Haley. (But hopefully it's Rachel from the Santa Barbara Adventure Company, and you get her kayak tour; shout out!)

We had a fun ferry ride to the islands and even got to slow down to watch a large Sunfish (Mola Mola) snacking on some jellies. I recommend getting in line early to secure the best view seating on the ferry. Our kayak guides, Chuck and Adam, were exceptional--knowledgeable, engaging, and genuinely passionate about what they do. They made the entire trip both fun and informative, while ensuring we always felt safe and well cared for. We were fortunate to have perfect weather and warm water, which allowed us to explore all seven sea caves--many of which are inaccessible during high tide or rougher conditions. It made the experience even more special. Having lived in Santa Barbara for 22 years, this was my first time visiting the islands, and it was truly unforgettable. The pristine landscapes, abundant sea life, and even spotting several tiny island foxes while enjoying our picnic lunch, made it an unforgettable adventure.
