Fantastic experience! Johnny and his team (Shane was my instructor), are excellent. They provided all the gear, which was clean, prepped and ready to go. The location is extremely convenience (a 1 minute walk with the board to the water. Shane was patient and gave clear instruction. Never tried surfing before so I decided to check out Sandbar, owned by a friend of almost 30-years. His staff is extremely helpful and hands on and the owner Jonny is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. His pure excitement when we (well at least my boys because I was too fat and not agile) caught a wave was great! While in Pismo, I wouldn't pass up an opportunity to try Sandbar Surf School. The best part! Unlike in Mexico when you finish an activity, they ask you to spend hundreds on photos, Jonny's guy takes photos and then sends you a Dropbox link to get them....for free. read more

Wow, thanks a ton to Jonny and his instructor, Robby. We had no idea what to expect for our 9 year old boy who has good balance (Karate) but had not done any skateboarding or anything like that. We thought he'd be scared and Robby made him comfortable and delicately pushed him to push himself. Our son caught 4 or 5 good waves in 60 minutes, and true to form ended his own lesson knowing he was a little tired, the water is cold of course, not the surf school's issue. The equipment was in good shape, great job fitting the wet suits even for the Daddy who was a little bigger than most of the students. Loved it and can't wait to come back! read more

WOW -- What an amazing experience our grandsons ( Nicco & Gianni ) had! It's is something they will never forget! This is the best surf school in Pismo. They not only taught them to surf, they taught them how to handle the ocean. Cat was unbelievable with them as they are 7&9 never been in the ocean. They are still talking about when they are going to go back. They have a summer place with their Parents and never wanted to wakeboard and they did this summer. I booked the 3 day surf school with Sandbar for my 16 year old daughter. The only experience she had prior to this was 1 lesson in Maui a couple of weeks ago, so she was eager to keep learning. I booked with Sandbar because of the great Yelp reviews and once again, the Yelpers pointed me in the right direction. Booking was a breeze online and the price was fantastic. Finding the school on the 1st day was easy and everyone was in a great mood. My daughter felt welcomed and comfortable right away. Johnny and all of the instructors were enthusiastic and helpful with getting all the students suited up and out on the water. My daughter said she learned a lot more on her 1st day at Sandbar than she did in Maui. One the 2nd day, she learned that not all days on the water are perfect and on day 3, she caught all the waves she went for. It was a wonderful learning experience for her and she wants to continue surfing when we get back home. This is exactly what I was hoping for! Johnny and the team blew me away with how well they remembered everyone's names - even students who surfed months ago!! This surf school has progressively grown since Jonny has owned it. Surf schools have come and gone along the coast but Sandbar surf seems to have found its place. There's always a consistency with the instruction though the instructors can change. The clients/ students seem to always have fun. And I've noticed that there are returning clients. What a wonderful first time experience in learning to surf. Johnny and his crew were so fun, great teachers, really encouraging and always made you feel safe in the waves. My 7 year old was too scared to try, so we left her with grandma on the beach...within a few minutes of us getting in the water, she had changed her mind and Johnny was amazing. He grabbed a wetsuit and a board and got her out on the waves and she had the best time ever. Hand's down the best action sports introduction I've ever had. We'd been in Pismo for weeks for work and finally had a weekend off, so a small group of my coworkers and I decided on giving it a go. Now, we're from Texas and I've never surfed but the owner Jonny, and our instructor Rowan were absolute legends. After a short, thorough, and easy to absorb introduction we were on the water. We had a one hour block but within the first 15 minutes of being on the water we were all upright and learning the nuances. Rowan even grabbed his board and showed us the ropes until the surf died down. Here's the kicker though, even after the lesson these dudes had invited us to go have tacos at the best taco joint I'd been to in California. It really broke the monotony of the tourist trap atmosphere you can fall into in some places and felt every bit like a chill local vibe. Almost like kicking back with some rad extended family! I'll definitely be going back! read more
