My wife and I are from Michigan, and never touched a surf board in our lives. We decided to try surfing since we were in Pismo Beach. We called and made an appointment with Zada Surf School. The lady/owner that we spoke with to make the appointment was great. She had us come to her salon to sign up and get fitted for the wetsuits. If you hadn't put on a wetsuit before it can be challenging She helped us with the wetsuits and set the expectations for the surfing lessons. Walked 3 blocks down the street and met Rodney the surf instructor. Rodney has a set process for his lessons, and did a great job making it easy for us to understand what we need to do. My wife actually got up and caught a great ride on her second attempt. Rodney is out in the surf with you and continues to coach and push you make sure you are following the process. Rodney kicked my butt and I loved it! He is The Surfing Teacher all the way! He laid down the law (all in a good way) so I learned. He said things like, "Listen to me carefully and do as I say and in the order I tell you do it." And, "You are the student and don't yet have enough data to know what you are doing right or wrong - I'll tell you what you are doing right or wrong." Total boss man, it was awesome. He pushed me to do it on on my own so I learned. He pushed me physically so I had lots of chances to learn. He told me what I was doing wrong so I learned. He told me what I did right so I learned. I came back from surfing so darn tired and spent and happy and exhilarated...it was a vacation experience I won't soon forget and I look forward to another lesson with him next year on my way thru Central Coast. read more

Rodney is very kind and patience. My two friends and I are in our sixties. He was very supportive. One of his philosophies is to just have fun. We had a blast. All three of us stood up on our boards in our first lesson. In fact after our lesson we are ready to go out and practice. He has a passion for surfing, and a ability to pass that on. He has also given me good advise on buying my first surf board. I plan to take my 15 year old grand daughter for a lesson. Rodney is someone I trust. I had a really great time during my surf lesson with Rodney! He's a super patient and attentive instructor and I appreciated the feedback/pointers he gave me while we were out in the water. He had a sort of step-by-step course for his lesson which really helped me understand the basics of surfing easily. Love that he emphasized safety before we began surfing. I've surfed a couple times on my own before, but this lesson really helped me to start setting up correct techniques and habits as a base to build upon when I go out again on my own. Saw Rod giving a lesson. Wanted to get a surf lesson quite spontaneously. Gave a call, got a lesson within an hour. Rod was knowledgeable, gave me a first quick introduction. Then we immediately entered the ocean. He was pushing me all the time and also challenged me always considering my personal level. It was not only a challenge but also much fun! Perfect! When I got exhausted after an hour we postponed the second half of the lesson to the next day. Everything according to my needs. Great service! This place is AMAZING!!! When I told my friends about this the didn't believe it! Some people have to take years to learn to surf. When I got up in the first ten minutes! This guys I amazing that's really all I can say like wow! He is very thoughtful and understanding! This guy is on team USA right now. He is even teaches amputees to surf! Thank-you Rodney (and Carmen) for giving me a truly wonderful surfing experience. After watching my 11 year old great nephew take a lesson with Rodney, I decided I had to do it. I'm going to be 64 in August and had doubts about my stamina and ability. I've never worn a wet suit. Rodney made the lesson so easy and really built my confidence. And OMG, is it FUN!! With three granddaughters in WA who visit us when they turn 13, there have been three surf schools in our sampling. By way of comparison, ZADA is the best combination of instructor, equipment, and location. Charlotte got up on her third attempt and had 7 or 8 nice rides. My husband and I have taken surf lessons with Rodney the past two summers that we've visited Pismo. Rodney is excellent! He is very patient and provides clear instruction. In addition to surfing basics, he also teaches surf etiquette and ocean dynamics so that you can safely go out on your own later. Decided on a beach/ocean theme for my daughter's birthday this year and thought surf lessons would be a really fun activity. I can't say enough how great Darin and Rodney were! This is definitely the surf lesson that I would always go to. I learned how to surf in two hours. It's that easy with rodney, you know your instructor knows what he's doing when he's considering the Olympics. Awesome instructors! This is the second year in a row we used Zada Surf. They are reasonable, safe and very knowledgeable. I felt extremely comfortable with my 7 and 9 year old boys with them. They not only taught about how to get on the board but currents and safety. We shall return. read more
