While my sister and I were taking a walk from our hotel, we happened upon the Shell Beach Surf Shop. What a nice discovery during our exploratory hike. They had a large variety of beach, surf, active and exercise apparel that included swim suits, souvenir T-shirts, hats, and jackets. I wanted to purchase a local souvenir sweatshirt, but I'm particular about not wanting a pull over. Too cumbersome for me. The sweat jackets were nice, but I couldn't find exactly the right size or color I needed to add to my wardrobe. Other than that, we enjoyed checking out the clothes and the surfing items. I'm no sports extremist, but they had a little bit of everything for the water and beach adventurer. The prices are about average and expected from a nice resort town. I'll be sure to check in again during our next vacation to San Luis Obispo and it's surrounding areas. read more

I don't take the time to leave reviews, but these guys made an impression. My wife has fond memories of shell beach surf shop from back in the day so I stopped by to pick up a few hats and swag. I liked a kids hat for my daughter and asked if they had one for my wife. On the spot the owner and the guys said I'll make it if you have a few minutes. Sure enough he makes the hat I wanted custom. First, I just want to say that we are still on holiday here in Pismo and we have a no phone /no device policy in our fam during vacations. But I did want to pause for a moment to just send another shout out to shell beach surf shop because that's how amazing they are. These guys are all honestly the best in this entire central coast area. We planned our trip and location here for the week specifically so the kids can surf with Stu. That said, Stu was out of town and we got Daniel who is also equally as good, and a wonderful teacher and human. Matt who helps run the shop is also amazing, super responsive and just great. Shell Beach Surf Shop Surf and Yoga Retreat Review I just got back from Stu's latest Surf retreat in Nicaragua - and I have nothing but excellence to report - if you are a great surfer, a mediocre surfer - or like me, a 53 year old desert rat who has always wanted to learn how to stand on a board in the ocean - you will love this trip. Stu and his partner in adventure, Josh, created an amazing journey for all of us. We stayed for one week at a beach-side estate and surfed three times per day - did yoga in between and were treated to delicious meals by a wonderful and attentive chef. If you were skilled, Josh took you to several different "adventure beaches" to test your skills, if you were like me, someone who has never caught a wave before, you could stay at the local beach with Stu and just keep at it. By the end of the week, I was catching waves - and even standing and riding like a shaky, but happy "junior surfer". Oh, and you could also ride dirt bikes in the jungle - which I was taught to do by Stu! What a great time - you should join Stu and Josh in Nicaragua! read more

Just finished a lesson with Bryce and I have to say the whole experience was excellent. I originally had an appointment with another surf shop and they cancelled on me 1/2 hour before the lesson because apparently it was closed, even though the booking system accepted my reservation. Well, I'm glad it was cancelled because I found this spot! I called Shell Beach and talked to Stu who was happy to accommodate my last minute request. He even offered to take me out himself if his instructor couldn't be reached. What service!! Bryce was pleasant, knowledgeable, and encouraging to help me feel comfortable and one with the ocean. When I came back to return the wetsuit, he had written some recommendations for fun stuff in the area! How thoughful! I will be coming back for more! Five stars are not enough for this awesome shop!!! I can't say enough positive things about our surf lesson with Shell Beach Surf Shop. Zack and Stu are amazing! They were especially great with my kids, since this was their first time surfing. They were both up and riding by the end of the hour and a half lesson! My youngest is 9, and autistic. They were amazing with him, leading him through all the steps until he put it together and caught his first wave. The joy on his face was priceless! I highly recommend this shop for lessons for surfers of all ages and abilities. They emphasized safety as well as technique and were so kind. They made it easy from start to finish. The epitome of quality and personality! Stu and his cousin (I think his name is Daniel) were just amazing. No sales BS being fake and all that you'd expect from a high end instructor and beautiful shop. We got surfing lessons for my 10 year old son and myself and I couldn't be happier. They were easy to understand, on time and had an amazing attitude! The pricing was very reasonable and included a full length 4/3 wetsuit. They didn't have a wetsuit for my son, and just opened up a new wetsuit for him to use! They were genuinely interested in teaching us to surf on our first lesson with the intent to spark our surfing itch and have us surf on our own. It worked. We're getting surfboards and planning on practicing in Santa Cruz that's closer to where we live. Just go see Stu and have a great time learning to surf! It was my son's highlight of the trip even with watching fireworks from right next to the pier and ATV's the sand dunes. read more

You have found where you need to go! 1-Clothing- Stu (the owner) has a wide selection of Women's, Men's and Children's clothing, including, sweatshirts, t-shirts, button downs, pull overs, shorts, dresses, bathing suits and all those cool surfer type of "hoodies" we all wore in high school. 2-Beach toys for purchase- a small but nice selection of high end toys, along with boogie boards and a ridiculous selection of surf boards which apparently is what Stu does, now that follow the shops facebook page...wow! 3-Everything you could possibly need for your board, wetsuit or you (not joking) wax, lotion, stickers, booties, jewelery, on and on. 4-The shop was set up beautifully, super clean, well organized, "very cool and old school" but also efficient and modern. Stu had everything any customer needed (we were in the store a few times and heard him helping other folks) 5-Lessons! We took a private surfing lesson for my two boys (8 + 10). First time ever out in the ocean and on a board. I literally can not say enough about Stu, he is AMAZING. Calm, funny, cool. Made you instantly feel that you would trust your children with him. The boys had an amazing connection with him. You come in the night before to pick up your wetsuit and then meet him at the beach the next morning. He goes through some instruction and stretching first and then takes one out at a time. He had my son standing up and surfing on THE FIRST WAVE/FIRST TRY! This was the absolute highlight of our trip. The boys did not stop talking about it and STU! And were crushed that we did not stop and say good bye to him when we left at the end of the week. Amazing instructor!!! professional-personable and thorough...If you want it real...with no judgement and an always ready smile, laugh and encouraging words to get you back at it.. and from a life long surfer no less, yeah. I am a number one fan! My 13 year old was desperate to learn how to surf and now she can! Backdrop.....Staying at the cliff's resort, we stumbled upon Stu and his Shell Beach Surf Shop. Task one- buy a wet suit for our 10 year old. Stu was beyond helpful and provided us with incredible knowledge as to which wetsuit was appropriate for our 10 year old. He was super patient helping her learn to actually get into the suit. Mission accomplished! Stu casually mentioned that his shop also offers surf lessons. My 13 year old had been asking for lessons so we jumped at the opportunity. We were with Stu for three lessons and our girl is a surfer. AMAZING experience!!! We had 5 kids in our group (ages 7-12) and all the kids had a fun times and learned so much! Stu and Zach really made sure all the kids were safe and had a good time. Last year we used a different local company for lessons and my 9 yo daughter wasn't supported or helped at all because there were so many kids out in the water. She quit half way through and no one noticed. She didn't even want to try lessons again this year, but I convinced her to try. This year with Shell Beach Surf, Stu and Zach made sure she got the attention and support she needed. By the end of the lesson she was paddling out and catching some waves herself. She set me up with Zach as my surf instructor and I cannot say enough great things about this guy! Super knowledgeable about the ocean and surfing. With his great teachings I was able to get up on the surf board quite a few times and start to work from a larger board down to a smaller board with Zachs help!
