I do like to drop into surf shops when I happen to be in a beach town. When I was in Carpentaria near Santa Claus beach, I popped into the A-Frame Surf shop. They offer *surf boards, *SUPs, *boogey boards, leashes, wax, *wetsuit, swim gear, towels, clothes, hats, sunglasses, and beach gear. They *rent out gear. Also what sets them apart from typical surf shops is that they offer lessons (all ages) and summer camps for kids. The shop is clean, modern, well stocked and organized. The staff were helpful. Plus I happen to see the kiddos summer camp surf lessons at Santa Claus beach. I was impressed with the organization and leadership to handle the gaggle of surfing kiddos and teach 'em a thing or two . read more

It's unfortunate because every time we come to Carpinteria, we've stopped by this surf shop for the past 10 years. We always hope the experience will be different, and we've purchased items from the store many times over the years. Unfortunately, the staff has consistently come across as unfriendly and unwelcoming. As a customer, it's hard not to wonder if we're being treated differently, and that feeling is disappointing. Whether that's the case or not, we've never felt welcomed here despite being loyal customers. It's sad that after so many visits, the experience has never improved. Based on our repeated experiences over the years, I can't recommend this shop. Zero stars. read more

Went in with my kids to look around and inquire about their kids surf camps. The lady at the front desk was rude, gave glaring looks. A man who knew the lady (not sure if he also worked there) had two large dogs. My kids were very respectful and asked if they could let the dogs. He said yes, lady said one (she knew it by name) looked nervous. She was sending allll the evil vibes our way and clearly wanted us to leave. My son had skateboarded up, I commented that he should not ride it in the shop (obviously) but was excited because there was one in the doorway. The man kinda laughed and said yeah, tha would be a bad idea. The woman looked like she was going to have a kinipshin. Overall, just super unfriendly. We were clearly not the people she wanted in her shop. Not sure who she does since they had kids beach toys and other stuff prominently displayed, and advertised a kids surf camps. But I will definitly not be signing my kids up for that one. read more

Big shout out to A Frame Surf Shop for their stellar summer camp. My son said it was his favorite camp ever! Rory and Andre are amazing surf instructors and my 5 yr old son felt comfortable and safe in the water. I'm so thankful that those two guys were his instructors! They took him out on his board over and over and over again. I would highly recommend this camp to anyone whose child is interested in surfing or just loves the ocean and spending a day at the beach. He took time to help me and answer my questions while still politely and professionally helping other customers as they entered the store. Customer service is an art as much as it is a skill and this place has it! As a forever student in surfing it was great to walk in to a place where I felt my needs were heard, I didn't feel any pressure to purchase anything or talked down to cause of my lack of experience. This experience was nothing short of amazing. I had my niece for a couple days towards the end of her summer vacation and thought I'd get her into A-Frame's surf camp for kids. You can book by the day or a week at a time. I booked a day since we were approaching the end of her stay here. I will say I was hesitant at first to leave my 12 year old niece for the day camp from a water safety perspective, but that perspective changed quickly as I stood and heard how thorough the camp takes safety (even sunburns!). The kids are given water safety techniques with respect to the local wildlife and ground rules are discussed at length. I quickly realized I picked the right surf camp. My only regret is that we hadn't signed up earlier and for a longer period. Ideally I would have signed my niece up for the week long surf camp. But there's always next summer I would highly recommend A-Frame surf camp! read more

I was heading back home to SB from LA, hitting various surf shops along the way looking for a soft top for my son. Selection is scarce these days, but A-Frame was one of the few places with a decent selection of Odysea boards and more. The shop is not huge, but has just about everything you want, with hard/soft tops up to large fun shapes. My son needed something that had some float, but was maneuverable. I thought we'd need at least a 7', but the young and exuberant Sam steered us towards a 6' 6" Odysea "Mayhem." I never considered going that short, but he said it's an excellent board that he rides himself and highly recommended it. First day my son took it out in smallish surf, he was catching every wave and turning like a pro! We were very happy with the purchase. Sam was super knowledgeable and walked us through fin and board setup, without a hint of surfer conceit; overall great experience and would come back anytime, being 15min from SB. read more

The A Frame Surf shop stands a short walk from Pedaro beach. They're stocked with all the usual surf-beach items like wet suits, boogie and surf boards, sunglasses, sandals, sunscreen, caps and sun hats, swim trunks for men and teeny bikinis for the girls. Unlike most surf shops I've been to they actually carry some beach cover-ups and casual clothes that can be worn by a woman over 16. (I have my eye on a cute printed cotton tunic.) The salespeople are friendly and helpful. I was greeted at the door and when I had a question it was easy to find someone to help me. Truth is, as nice as the store is, I only came here to obtain surfing lessons for my kids. After reading all the great reviews we signed up for a private lesson and Akila took my son out for an hour and a half lesson. Success! He was standing up and riding some small waves within a few minutes. The next day we returned for another lesson this time with both my daughter and son. My daughter had more difficulty surfing, but Akila was very patient with her. I thought she would become discouraged but no, she had a blast. Lessons are $90 for one person. $75 each for two people. They provide a wet suit and board. So it's a cute shop with helpful employees and great surf lessons! read more

The easiest rental service ever! And very reasonable prices as well. Came in to rent two surfboards for the whole day, $30 each and return by 7pm. I signed one paper and the employee pointed to where the boards were and told us we were good to go lol We weren't exactly sure what size would be best so she walked us out to the back to pick the boards and had another employee with more sizing knowledge help us. He recommended the 9 to 10 footers for those who aren't professional yet, and although they seem enormous, it was the right choice! haha. We've surfed a few times and thought a 7 ft and 8 1/2 ft would suffice (5'2 girl and 5'9 guy). He also mentioned if we didn't do too well with the size we chose, we could come back anytime to get a different board, and I think it's cause he sensed the uncertainty and non-existent confidence in our voices lol but I don't blame him, he was right. Went to catch some waves and got our asses whooped. So small tip, if your gut tells you to go with the bigger board (bigger board = easier to stay afloat/balance), LISTEN TO YOUR GUT. Cause it's a long walk to the beach if you've got wimpy short arms that don't fit around the board so you have to carry it over your head the whole way! Lol Returning the rental was super simple as well. I came into the store to check out (they charge your card at return), my friend returned the boards to the side of the store and we left. They didn't even check or saw that we physically returned it. Very trusting, I like it! Some other surfboard rental shops had a $400 deposit and a $3 cleaning fee if the boards weren't returned clean and sand-free... ridiculous lol THANKS A-FRAME! Fantastic customer service! I bought a groupon here, but it expired before I had a chance to use it. I decided to see if they would let me redeem it (but was not expecting much). And they let me redeem it for merchandise. They even offered to drop the price of a leash by a few dollars since it was an older model. What? I couldn't believe it. I found this surf shop from a post on Trip Advisor. I wanted a surfing lesson for my daughter and we were staying in Carpinteria visiting friends. What started as a short trip turned into a longer one once we experienced this great little beach town and the personal lesson that my daughter got from Rob, at A Frame Surf Shop. Rob and his brother own this little shop right off of Santa Claus Lane. What a gem I found! Rob is just what you would hope for in an instructor - he listens, is patient, and most importantly, you can tell he loves what he does and has that special connection with the ocean and a respect for surfing and the experience it can give someone. All I can say is that we will be back. There is a summer surf camp and we already plan to spend a week here with Rob and his team. Additional comments from my daughter: I am the daughter from the post above and I am so very happy that I got the chance to take this lesson. With Rob, I got to experience what it feels like to actually be a surfer. Rob listens and understands what I have to say. He helped me conquer my fear of surfing and I successfully accomplished 2 whole lessons (almost 3 hours for 1 lesson). He told me that he teaches from the ranges of 4 to adult which made me feel comfortable. He is an AWESOME teacher and I can't wait till we visit again! And no matter if it is your first time surfing, it is a one-on-one lesson and it was absolutely GREAT!! read more

A-frame surf? Nope! More like A-mazing surf. I've been to this place dozens of times and it's about as good as it gets for me. They have anything you'd want from a surfshop from clothing, to new/used boards, posters, wax, leashes, wet suits, etc. They also do lessons and rentals. I've rented wet suits from them on several occasions and they always had something that fit, even if it wasn't the start of the day. The best part about the place for me (besides the selection / service) is the attitude. Or rather, the lack there of. Nobody in the shop has ever talked down to me or my friend who is learning to surf. All the employees are surfers themselves so if you tell them about your amazing 3' wave that you had a blast on, they are genuinely happy for you. I'm from SB and surf as far south as Ventura, but there is only one surf shop for me and that is A-Frame. PS.: There is 4-6 spots in the front that's for store parking only. No matter how busy the surrounding area is, there is usually a spot or two available. read more

Everyone here was nice and knowledgable. Great vibe from the second I walked in. My wife and I rented some boogie boards and wetsuits, so I was prepared to be treated like the low-sale-potential tourist I was. Didn't happen. Rob was friendly and attentive, and made sure we had nice body boards and wetsuits that fit. I'm short, and need a pretty small suit, and the one Rob brought out fit perfectly and he never said a word about it. A-plus on not razzing a small guy. I also saw Rob giving a surf lesson on the beach, and even though I could only hear a little bit of what he was saying, the body language of his student was relaxed and she was surfing by the end of it. From what I could see/hear, he's an excellent instructor. Can't wait to return and maybe get my wife a surf lesson. Great shop, guys. read more

When I'm in Santa Barbara, I use A-Frame almost exclusively for all of my surfing/paddleboarding rentals. The staff is very knowledgable, friendly, and helpful. I've rented both a surfboard and paddleboard (with LivingSocial coupon) through A-Frame. The half-day surfboard/wetsuit rental is quite reasonable ($15-25 and $10-15 respectively). Paddleboarding is a bit more expensive at $40-60. I probably wouldn't have rented the paddleboard without my LivingSocial coupon. All-in-all, a great experience! read more

Great prices however forget to provide leashes (standard safety item) for surf boards and stand up paddle boards). Upon return of boards I asked for a discount and was told that I have to request the leashes. The other standard safety item that I did request however it wasn't loaded into our van was life vests! This is disappointing especially since we were the only ones renting at the time and in the shop. Nice staff however too lax on safety. read more

The two brothers that run A-Frame are the most helpful and honest you'll find anywhere... they are friendly, patient, get to know where you are with your surfing and what you hope to improve, and then offer excellent advice without being pushy or pretentious. I bought a used Robert August 9'2" here for a very affordable price to help me progress in small waves when my 7'6" and 6'8" weren't enough for consistent fun. I highly recommend this store for all your surf needs and wish more surf shops were like this! read more

Nice vibe, I usually like to stop by to see what is new an look at some boards and daydream about a classic long board. They do not have a huge selection of boards but do have a wide range of them for any riding style. The owner greeted and welcomed us to his shop. Obviously took great pride in his shop. We bought a Hybrid body board and the owner threw in a little discount just to be cool. it is not my neighborhood shop but always worth a stop. Check out the 60's and 70's surf films on DVD. I signed up twice for surf lessons and was under the impression I'd receive them when I came the next day. The best they could do is give me some tips on how to surf, but no lesson.
