A Frame kills it on Yelp, and for good reason. As background, I decided this year that it was time to learn to surf, living in Santa Barbara and all, so I asked around and all of our friends said the same thing: go to A Frame. I'd been there before, checking out SUPs for the family, and was always taken aback at how welcoming and friendly they were. No judgment about my obvious lack of knowledge. Just laid back, always ready with an answer, and no pressure to buy. One day I met Rob, told him I had taken a lesson with one of A Frame's instructors at a birthday party some friends had on the beach, and I wanted to try for real. He spent over an hour explaining surfboards to me, even though when I first walked in he was telling someone he was on his way home. We set up a lesson and the next day I was in the water. Yes, Rob and his team make learning easy, and you can definitely do a one-day fun course if you are visiting. There are enough reviews on that so I won't re-endorse their skills. But this is from the perspective of someone who wanted to learn for the long haul. Rob spent hours explaining the fundamentals of surfing with me (reading waves, bathymetry, and the general ethos of surfing). I also managed to take lessons with Eric and his cousin, Cole (the #5 ranked long boarder in the world!), and it was great to get a mix of styles and perspectives. I'd also say that when it came time to buy a board, they really cared about getting me on the right equipment. I had no idea what I was doing, and they could have easily sold me an expensive board. But they actually said "no" when I tried to buy, insisting that I demo the lesson boards until they had my style dialed in and could make a solid recommendation. After weeks of lessons, they made their suggestions, but also told me that if I found a used board somewhere they'd be happy to check it out for me at no charge. And when this genius managed to ding his brand new board day one, they graciously patched it up it no charge and got me right back in the water. So whether you are a one-time visitor looking for a fun adventure or someone who wants to learn themselves, go to A Frame. Sam (Rob's brother and one of the owners), Justin, Emily, Eric, and Cole will take great care of you and be sure that you have what you need to get stoked. On a final note, many of our friends have children who take lessons with the A Frame crew, and they rave about them too. Bought an Xcel 3/4 size 6 ladies wetsuit here last week. I surfed in it today and it was amazing!!! Total mobility in the suit and I was kept warm. Enough about the product they sell...In short, it is QUALITY! Their service was amazing. My husband and I wanted to try paddle-boarding so I called A-frame and talked to Eric. They didn't have lessons available that day, and when he heard we didn't have a babysitter the next day he got his (highly qualified) girlfriend to babysit for us on the beach while we had out lesson! The lesson was awesome! Eric was patient and positive at all times and got me up and paddling immediately. My husband needed a little more help and he got him comfortable and confident by the end of the lesson. At the end of the lesson he pushed us in on our boards and I commented that I almost felt like I was really surfing. He offered to help me catch a couple waves! I liked surfing so much I booked a regular surfing lesson with Eric and it was incredible! He got into safety and theory and followed that with a lesson that had me judging and catching waves all by myself! I have the bug now. I'll be back! read more

My wife and I stopped in to A-Frame on a whim. It was just as they opened on a Friday morning and we wanted to get a last minute, same day, beginners surf lesson. Understandably there was no instructor available at such short notice. But the owner came in on his day off and took us out for a great lesson. All that you have read on Trip Advisor and Yelp is true about Rob and his staff. These folks are patient with all kinds of surfers/people and treat people with kindness and respect. Rad. While visiting Carp on holiday this last weekend, I popped into A-Frame as I'd heard they rented SUPs. Everyone working there was chill and friendly, they had an awesome and equal selection of gear for both men AND women. I picked up a few necklaces and a hat, nothing major. The fellow at the counter and also a surfer fresh in from the water gave me a candid take on ocean conditions. As I'm from Arizona and am used to paddling flat water, they suggested I head up the road a piece to Santa Barbara Harbor where the water would be more calm. I am a Ventura local and this was my first visit to A-Frame. What brought me here was their willingness to support a great cause. Some friends and I were participating in the Stand Up for the Cure for Cancer SUPing event in Newport Beach and we needed a couple of paddle boards to rent for the event. Never again will I give this store my business. I parked in front of the store, looked at some things that I wanted to purchase. I wanted to walked next door to pickup my lunch order and the owner told me to move my car. At this time 3 spots were empty. No one was shopping in the store. It was pointless for her to ask me to move. I even told her I was coming back to purchase school clothes for my son and possibly a surf board for my daughter. She was so rude. As a small business owner you should never turn away clients. Also, while I was inside the owner was having a conversation on how everything is changing at Santa Clause beach and they don't like it. This is one of the most special places on the California coast. The folks here really care - they make sure your wet suit fits right, they make sure you get the right equipment for your needs. And now, after hiring A-Frame for an event, we can say they make sure everyone gets a shot at standing up on a surf board. :) A-Frame's fun, enthusiastic, and competent team set up on the beach in Carpinteria for our son's party and WOW did everyone have fun. For close to six hours, they had lifeguards walking the shore to keep everyone safe, plus they had instructors in the water helping everyone from the littlest kid to the oldest grandpa get up on a wave. Their joy is infectious and their generosity of spirit is a great addition to any event on the beach. A-Frame has the friendliest, most helpful team of people you can find. I'm a novice surfer -- in my 40's, trying to learn. Recently took a lesson there -- and Adam, along with the rest of the group could not have been better. So I took another lesson -- and once again received great instruction and advice. The owner, Rob, went over and above for me. I am from San Diego and was up visiting my mom for an early holiday this weekend and desperately wanted to purchase a sweet scenic shot of the Santa Barbara coastline for a babe I'm trying to win over. After going to every shop imaginable in downtown SB with absolutely no luck, i decided to try his shop, figuring as a local shop owner he might have some local photography. Unfortunately he did not, but he called around for me and gave me some recommendations on where to search. I called one of his recommendations and they had exactly what I was looking for. I grew up surfing in San Diego and have been to a plethora of surf shops up and down the california coast. Never have I had an employee, much less the owner, of a shop go to those lengths to help me get what I wanted. I highly recommend this shop to anyone traveling along the 101. In August, we took a trip down to Carpinteria and visited A-Frame Surf. We were extremely impressed with Rob's love for surfing and teaching people to surf. He was funny, easy-going, and very supportive of everyone in our group. He gave each one of us helpful constructive criticism and mostly focused on the positive things we did rather than the negative. Rob made sure we each understood what to do and got the help we needed. A-Frame is run by Rob and his brother,and, despite being a family-run business, was quite professional. All of the equipment was in great condition. They hand wash each wet suit after each lesson ad Rob was able to perfectly fit us for our wet suits on his first try. He also provided us with high-quality Sex Wax sunscreen at the beginning of our lesson. A-Frame's lessons were very inexpensive considering their amazing quality and length. In the lesson, he utilized every style of learning; oral, visual, and kinesthetic. Rob stayed with us and let us use the equipment for a few hours longer than scheduled because he wanted to spend that extra time with us to make sure we got the most out of our lesson. read more
