A fantastic experience! My girlfriend and I drove up to Asheville for our anniversary and wanted to try an escape room for the first time, but didn't want to do one with a group of strangers. The owners are some of the kindest people I've met and really make you feel welcome and appreciated. We did the USS Kestrel submarine room and the atmosphere really makes you think you're in a submarine. The puzzles are very well done and exciting to try and solve. I'm an escape room fanatic. At this point in time, I'm nearly over 100 different rooms, and my grading policy has changed quite a bit from when I first started rating escape rooms. Now, I look at a few different things in particular. All of which A-Escape does phenomenally well. 1) Price. I have never paid so little ($19) for such a quality escape room. Because of this, we played two in the same day. It felt like a buy one get one deal based on the prices I pay regularly in NYC. 2) Quality of Puzzles: Even more than narrative, it's super important to have both a good amount of puzzles and high quality puzzles. This place had both. Both rooms that we did (more on them a little later) were fantastic in that regard. 3) Customer Service: This Place excelled with their customer service. The owners were clearly fans of escape rooms themselves and felt comfortable talking shop with us for as long as we wanted. It was nice! Here are the two rooms we did: The Submarine (2 players, win: 51:21): The Good: Lots of puzzles. Great Hint System. Really good narrative. Puzzles made sense in the grand scheme of the room. Challenging, but not impossible by any stretch. The okay: Although the narrative was phenomenal, The set could have used a bit more realism. Although this is completely a nitpick, it felt like we were in a room, not a submarine. The not so good: There's only one timer, and it's in the opening room of the journey, so as you continue on, you need to continually walk back to find your time. Hard to gauge. At times, it was hard to know what lock you were opening at the time of solving the puzzle, especially since the types of locks were not always varied. The Research Facility: (2 players, win: 43:18) Much of the conversation between the two rooms are exactly the same. The puzzles and the story was great, in the research facility, you had to be cognizant of a bunch of minor details which led to a quick solve. While I wasn't all that impressed with the decorum of the room, everything else more than made up for it. All in all, one of the more satisfying escape room days in a long time. We came to North Carolina from Houston for my birthday weekend and decided to do check out A escape. I must say it was one of the more challenging escape rooms I've done but it was AMAZING. The owners designed the rooms themselves and are so friendly! Unfortunately we didn't finish in 60 minutes (61 minutes ) it was well worth it. If we come back to North Carolina we will definitely be coming back and doing the other rooms. read more

We've been to several escape rooms throughout the state and this may be our favorite. It started with the employee who greeted us and explained the rules. She was awesome. The room we chose had so many details and neat areas. They clearly spent a lot of time and money to create it. That shows in the detail. For our family of two parents and an 11 year old and 8 year old, we eventually were able to solve it. While challenging, it was not impossible. We look forward to checking out the other rooms next time we are in Asheville. read more

We've done several escape rooms and actually own one in our hometown. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of A-Escape's room! We did the Biotech Research Bunker room, and it was just the two of us. We were about 98% complete, which they told us was great for 2 people (even though we were so disappointed in ourselves! :-P) The puzzles were creative but all relevant to the story, everything was well thought-out, and the room itself was linear but not so linear that you were at a standstill if you got stuck on something. The location could be better, but you have to take what you can get with available space. I also wish their lobby was brighter & more professional-looking. Both of the owners were friendly, professional, informed, and helpful. We've never done any of Asheville's other escape rooms, but if we do in the future, A-Escape will be hard to beat. I went here for a team building activity with seven of my coworkers. None of us had been to an escape room before so we did not know what to expect and were a little nervous. Some of us do not like tight spaces or things jumping out at us. The location is hidden behind a gas station in somewhat of a rundown looking strip plaza. Don't let that deter you!!! We chose the submarine escape. Without giving too much away, we solved about 14 puzzles to try and "escape" and figure out the mystery behind the plot line. We had an absolute blast! The puzzles were challenging but we were allotted up to 5 hints so it stayed fun when if we got too stuck to continue. It's not scary and nothing jumps out at you. You are also not actually locked in anywhere, the door is closed but unlocked and staff are standing directly outside watching you on cameras so it's completely safe. I absolutely can not wait to try a different room next time. My team really worked well together and had so much fun solving the puzzles. read more

This was my first attempt at an escape room and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed it even more than I expected to! The theme of my escape room was "Cabin in the Woods" and my team had to find clues in a creepy dark room that felt pretty authentic. We were enclosed in the room for one hour and every so often were slipped additional clues under the door to help us along (we weren't the fastest at solving our mystery). In fact, we did not solve the puzzle within the hour, but I think we put forth a solid effect. I loved being immersed in a different reality, discovering secrets, rummaging through everything I could find and honestly getting super psyched every time my friends and I uncovered a new clue! The owners (who were incredibly nice) switch up the room themes every so often and I plan on returning soon to try a different mystery!! read more

Great experience. This was our first escape room experience. We did the casino one, and it was cute. Good puzzles. Good "traps" (potential time wasters). We used 4 hints and made it out with 1:15ish to spare. Haha. 20% pass rate, so we were pleased. Folks running the place were very nice. Building was weird, but that's not at all important. Travelling from Virginia beach to Asheville me and my friends decided to do the escape room and have picked a-escape to try it out. We did not expect it to be as much fun as it was. It keeps you going and looking for more clues to help you out. We did the casino mob boss and it was really interesting and fun. The crew that works there are really welcoming and the direction to the play the game is clear and direct. Some clues are tricky but do not over think and you will get it on point. Before going to A-Escape, I never had been to an escape room. I thought that A-Escape was a good experience. However, I bought 8 tickets before realizing that 2 people of our party could not go. I called and A-Escape told me that it would be fine and they would refund me when I showed up--lies. They did not refund me and I was stuck with 2 empty tickets because the establishment would not even give me credit for 2 people for future purchase. Additionally, I recently went to Breakout (in Asheville) which was a lot nicer and friendlier. The games were not just keys and locks (like A-Escape). The games are multi-dimensional and take a lot of thought. Also, Breakout is much newer and cleaner. Breakout is clearly superior. read more
