Well, my friend and I had a girl weekend in Asheville and tried a few fun workouts while we were in town. My girlfriend has been an aerialist for 4-5 years now and I've only taken one class before but we knew we'd love it. I figured if I couldn't manage any of the moves well, at least I could provide comic relief, right? The other young lady in our group was an Asheville local who just started lessons a month and a half ago, so between us there were many skill levels represented. Being a compact space, there are only four silk stations available so we had the privilege of watching the instructor on a set of silks as well. Carly lead us through a stretching warm up before we practiced with the silks. When Carly saw what we were able to manage she would add to it, varying the tasks for each of us as we all had wildly different strengths and weaknesses. The music was fun, Carly was patient and had wonderful verbal cues as well as demonstrating for me when the verbal clues left me scratching my head. I wish I lived closer and could build my upper body strength and enjoy this unique workout more often. It was hard and fun and two days later my shoulders and back are still sore but I'd go back tomorrow if I could! Now, where is my Cirque du Soleil contract??? read more

Um. I love this place. If I had the power to teleport, you better believe this is one of the places I'd hit up very, very frequently! (As often as my bruised limbs could allow. The lyra really digs into you, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and doubling up on fabric would probably also be pretty helpful. I'd been itching to take either a pole class or an aerial silks/lyra class for ages, and since I plan my travels around food and awesome fitness classes (priorities, right?), I definitely had to make a stop here before leaving Asheville! I called beforehand to make sure that it was okay for me to take the aerial lyra class, and the lady I spoke to was really helpful and friendly. (I'd only taken one class before, and that was quite unfortunately back in early 2012, so uh...it's been a while!) ...But my goodness, this was a super fun class! Evan was our instructor, and there was only one other student, so we started the class off with a light warmup, and then jumped right in. Evan was really good about explaining everything, and also in evaluating where we were at so that he could tailor the class to our level. We took turns going through a sequence and learning how to clean it up and make it look pretty + fluid. He was also really great about giving us pointers and cues, which was definitely helpful when we were puzzling out a couple of the moves. All in all, super super fun, and I really hope to come back to Asheville at some point again to visit, and so I can take more classes here! The handbalancing class that Evan teaches looks like a lot of fun, and I'd love to take more aerial lyra (+ silks!) classes! read more

Very fun place to learn new skills. If you start early enough in life and feel that way maybe you can even use it professionally as a start, definitely 100 times more enchanting than the rare adult ballet classes this city offers, that seem patronized by chunky ladies who still secretly dream of a surprise-career as the first swan at the Bolshoi. Reading through other reviewers and never having bought a coupon of any kind, although the site seems to have various glitches the response to e-mail inquiry in my case anyways has always been very fast, generous and effective, also in case of refund, so my experience here was definitely different and very good. Classes are very interesting and fun. The only critiques I have would be: - some teachers skip a group warm-up, which may result in pain after class - at times too many students are working and the teacher pays attention to just one of them, for example if they are working on a routine or training for a test, whilst all sorts of potentially risky situations happen in teh background with other students that the teacher does not even check on just in case - some teachers do not seem to create a series of exercises that build up on each other, instead present various exercises at least seemingly at random "today we do xyz"; if you get it one day you get it, good for you, otherwise, well, keep practicing. Instead of that a warm up and simple step-by-step exercises that lead up to more complicated things would be better. Some teachers do it more, others less, it seems. These are not typical situations, but happen once and a while. In general a wonderful place and a very fun thing to do for those who are interested in it and who are at least a tiny bit sporty to begin with, maybe less ideal if you have never moved until you are in your mid-thirties and on a whim want to try out something exotic. read more

I bought a groupon for Aerial Space. It was essentially buy one get one class free deal. I think it is a testament to a company how they handle their groupon customers. Aerial Space was awesome! Blue (the owner) sent out an email saying that the coupon was about to expire and that groupon users should go ahead and use theirs. Also, Blue returned all emails and phone calls. (A simple form of showing professionalism, but woefully missing in some professionals.) My son and I went last night to a kids class (they accept kids of all ages). Our teacher Waverly was so sweet and supportive. I was wondering if we would just have to work on one thing over and over again for our first class. This was not the case. We got to do all sorts of things. She encouraged us to push ourselves, but I didn't feel pressured to do anything where we didn't feel comfortable. Waverly also demonstrated some of the things she wanted us to do - and it was amazing to watch her. She wasn't show-offy or anything, just being instructional - but wonderful to watch nonetheless. After the class was over, both my son and I agreed that it was a lot of fun. There was this strange sense of elation that we both seemed to have. I don't know if there's something to being off the ground or up side down - but it felt great afterwards! read more

Like Carrie Bradshaw, I wanted to be a Flying Wallenda and fly through the air on the flying trapeze. To boot, I wanted the S.O to fly too for Valentine's Day. I set up this Valentine's Day private trapeze lesson for two via email and Blue, the owner of Aerial Space, was very knowledgeable and accommodating. Now, I didn't do my own research thoroughly and to my chagrin the trapeze at Aerial Space isn't a flying trapeze but it is a static or fixed trapeze. The acrobatics turned out to be a super fun but super tough workout! Blue is in crazy amazing shape and she would gracefully and easily demonstrate the moves we were about to learn like the Crucifix or the Angel. The S.O and I learned these trick or moves or what have you... albeit not easily or gracefully! We finished the lesson with a few lesson in aerial silks. I definitely have a greater appreciation for aerial arts and how easy these artistic athletes make it look. The S.O says now he won't be secretly wishing for the trapeze artists or acrobats to fall. Aerial Space has a myriad of class offerings and if I lived closer I definitely would be taking some of them! read more

My girlfriend bought us a private class on a whim as a fun adventure. Neither of us had any previous experience with aerial acrobatics and to be honest we were prepared to fail miserably at it and laugh at a funny memory. We had a class scheduled with Blue, and she turned out to be the most encouraging and accommodating teacher! Surprisingly it wasn't half as hard as we thought it would be and we both had a lot of fun! I highly recommend this place. The studio was clean and the atmosphere was playful. Blue was great at explaining things! In an environment that was initially very outside my comfort zone, she helped us feel at ease and made it a lot of fun! Whether you go with friends, as a couple, or even on your own, this was the most fun I've had exercising in a long time! read more

Aerial yoga: Stretch and strengthen in a cocoon of cloth. Yesterday I went to Aerial Space to try Aerial Yoga. Wow!! Did I have fun and get a great workout at the same time! Doing yoga hanging in a cloth sling is a totally different experience. The resistance and support of the cloth allow you to stretch and strengthen different muscles than in a regular yoga class. I really love inversions but I'm not strong enough to stay up long. In Aerial Yoga you can hang upside down comfortably as long as you please. Not to worry about height --- this can be done quite close to the ground. And anyone can learn. I'm 69. Whoa! Blue, the studio owner, will help you to learn each pose. She's compassionate and patient, and emphasizes the fun of playing in a sling. read more

Bought a Groupon. Was super excited to try this place out. As soon as I bought it, I went to their website to schedule a class. After reading all the class descriptions, I thought it would be wise (and safe) of me to email and ask which class would be best for a first timer... Its been 4 days and no one has bothered to return my email. I know it was opened hours after I sent it because I have email tracking on it. Terrible customer service. Today my 4 munchkins descended upon a darling woman who helped them fly for an hour. She has a sweet nature, careful and the 4 of very different ability had a blast. We opted for a private lesson, which was ideal and if I did again, may even get another helper as the kids were so excited to do at the same time. My sister and I just finished an hour private lesson with Blue, and we are so happy! First off, these classes are an incredibly fun way to spend time with someone on a rainy day. It felt great to move our bodies around in space - We felt like a real circus act together. Blue is really experienced and self-assured and made us feel super safe, and so we were actually able to pull off seemingly complicated moves which looked great in photos (not the point, but still nice to share). What a fun and inviting environment! I was in Asheville with friends for a vacation when we decided to try out Aerial Space. This was one of the huge highlights of our trip. Blue was our teacher and was beyond fabulous. Since there were 5 of us, we were the only people in the class. She tailored the class to exactly what we requested and wanted. In my first hand balancing class the instructor Evan started with a series of group warm ups and then quickly evaluated skill levels so each student could work at the pace they were at and train the skill sets they most needed to work on. His ability to multitask with different ranges of experience without wasting anyone's time was greatly appreciated. My friend and I had a blast and learned what skills we needed to work on as building blocks to get to the material that returning students had already trained and moved on from. He fostered us as Beginners without slowing down more advanced students. Aerial Space pioneered the way for the rapidly growing circus scene in Asheville and many of their students have gone on to professional careers. I have been going to aerial space for about 3 years mainly for aerial silks taught by Andrew, but I've also taken other classes. It is like a family! The instructors are knowledgeable, fantastic, and fun, not to mention concerned with all aspects of safety. Andrew is an amazing teacher -- entertaining, aware of everything going on around him, funny, and so, so patient. The space is small but inviting. Classes are small so that each student gets plenty of individualized attention. There is more a community, welcoming feel than there is a sense of competition; everyone I've met through aerial space is incredibly kind and supportive. Blue, the owner, is like a real life fairy. Her aerial skills are unbelievably graceful with no wasted movement, and she is a quirky, gentle and patient teacher. I encourage anyone of any age to try it out, and you will probably find you never want to leave! read more
