In all my visits to the Flat Rock Playhouse, I never knew there was a garden. I had seen the flowers around the house before, but if you keep going, there is a large area to walk around to get away from it all. There are some sculptures among the plants and flowers. I liked the goats. Make sure to check it out before a show. I am more amazed each time I come how well thought out the Flat Rock Playhouse is to getting everyone situated with parking, to making sure everyone gets to the correct seat. There isn't much space for parking, so they pack the cars in tight. This is a problem if you need or want to leave early, as you are stuck. But they make do with the space they have. The quality of the shows is outstanding as they get fantastic actors and have great costumes, sets, and music. This year I saw the Michael Jackson show, Beautiful, and Murder on the Orient Express. I'd have season tickets if I lived closer. I am wondering what shows will be playing for the next season. read more

The theater is in a scenic setting; rustic but fun. The quality of the performance was excellent. The only negative is that the theater is on a level that is the same throughout. Lived in WNC most of my life but never been to Flat Rock Playhouse. We have several local theaters we enjoy visiting. But we have never laughed as much as we did seeing, The Play That Goes Wrong. The set was Broadway worthy. Cast never missing a clue. The facility is first rate with plenty of restrooms, nice concessions and ample parking. We have been going to Flatrock Playhouse for many years and watched numerous wonderful plays. We also go to other theaters. Today we saw Murder on the Orient Express at Flatrock and I can unequivocally say IT WAS THE BEST PLAY WE HAVE EVER SEEN!! The set and costumes were amazing, but the actors were OUTSTANDING!! Steven Rattazzi who played the Inspector was truly one of the best actors I have seen in a long time, including on television. All of the actors were outstanding. I commend them all including the director, stage hands, lighting crew, everyone. No actor on Broadway in NY could have been any better! BRAVO read more

A great way to support theatre arts in WNC by attending a performance at this Asheville area non-profit community theatre. We recently saw Cabaret there (the late 90s revival, not the most recent "Cabaret At the Kit Kat Club" currently on Broadway). The play itself was well done. The staging and acoustics were 1st rate and the performances were generally quite good. Costumes...not so good. In terms of the venue: parking is rows of cars in tandem (meaning if you were to hate the performance and decided to leave early, you can't get out of the parking lot until everyone else leaves at the end). There's just not room enough on the site for a regular parking lot to handle the cars associated with the number of seats in the theatre, which is pretty large. The seats are comfortable, but the floor is not very sloped -- so if someone relatively tall is sitting in front of you in the next 1-3 rows, you'll be looking at the back of their head blocking a chunk of the stage. Summer A/C level was good, but I had condensation drip on me from an A/C unit above me several times during the performance (which actually felt pretty good on a hot, stuffy summer night). read more

I have been visiting my parents in Flat Rock once a year and they make sure we see a show every time and it never comes up empty. Between the actors and music and stage. The 2023 Christmas show was my first time at Flat Rock Playhouse. It was truly wonderful. I was very impressed with the selections and the quality of the music. If their music director put that show together and arranged all the music, he is truly an artist. There were so many upbeat songs presented in lively and sometimes humorous performances. The costumes were lovely and the dancing, especially students from Pat's School of Dance, were just extraordinary. I'll certainly go again-maybe even a second time THIS year. read more

Another excellent performance here today. Proposals by Neil Simon. Poignant comedy with many twists and turns kept us entertained for two hours. There is one intermission. The audience didn't seem to be on call for the first scene and only a few got the subtle humorous comments. But by the second scene they were warming up and "getting" it. The scenery was simple but excellently done, with the mountain house reflecting various times of day and the lake background transforming from dawn to evening to lend credibility to the story. The trees, trunks and branches were spot on with realism, looking just like a real forest. This was the first time in years that I've attended a performance that wasn't a musical, and I'm pleased to report that this latest drama endeavor was every bit as entertaining as the musicals. read more

We got free tickets to go here from someone who was in one of the shows. We went to see "Music of the Movies". Plays are not something I have really been to in the past and a lot of times we don't go out at night because it tends to be expensive. We are glad we experienced this and would definitely returned. We came up and got our tickets from will call, went into the theatre and were kindly shown to our seats and given a brochure on the show. The bathrooms are located outside so if you have to go ahead of time, just show up a couple of minutes early. They do have plenty of stalls. I noticed a concession stand but did not partake. They had a live band playing all of the music and well seasoned actors performing. The brochure (which we read later) had a little bio on each one so you could understand them a little better. We had such a great time! The music was fantastic! The musicians seemed really into it and the lady playing all of the wind instruments was especially impressive. Two of the characters were very theatrical, I had never seen that before, and it was very fun and different. Three of the singers really stood out to us. Capturing the songs perfectly but in their own way. The dance performers were also very entertaining. Really a fun way to spend the evening! We have to go back and see more shows now! read more

The music was good,could have done without the dancing,& the MC needs replacing...Alot of time was wasted with him talking,telling jokes,& trying to be funny! My MIL and her boyfriend enjoy coming here for performances and thought my husband and I would enjoy their Christmas Spectacular on our first night in Hendersonville. Besides only knowing a handful of songs (I'm Jewish so my Christmas song repertoire is pretty limited and of course Jingle Bells was not on the list of performances this evening), I could really appreciate the combination of vocals, dance, and instrumentals that came together to present a beautiful performance. Actually, I was extremely surprised at the caliber of performers in this small town show! I also really enjoyed how there was some slight narration throughout the evening that guided the viewer through the history of the Flat Rock Playhouse. The acoustics in this venue were excellent! The seats, well, they remind me of movie theater seats before the trend towards reclining leather seats, etc. The oddest part to me was that to use the restrooms (at least for women) you walk outside and then into the restroom, which makes 0 sense....Anyways, the concessions is nice albeit outdoors. You can bring your beverages of all varieties into the theater. Parking was also strange-they direct you into parking spaces that are blocking everyone in and you cannot leave until the people in front of you decide to get into their car and leave. Also strange-the theater doesn't open until a certain time yet there are huge crowds outside beforehand despite all having assigned seats. As others have mentioned, NO PICTURES OF ANYTHING! I think it is really fabulous that this theater exists in a small WNC town and offers a nice evening out that often cannot be found outside of a larger city. Again, the caliber of performers was amazing-and not just for a small town but some of the best voices I have heard in the theater in years! They do all types of shows throughout the year and I highly recommend a show if you are in the area! Despite having a very limited knowledge of Christmas music, I enjoyed the show, particularly the dance and instrumental aspects, and would return in the future for other performances! read more

WOW!!!! We saw the Christmas Carol, and I must say, what a great little theatre!! This is no small town high school style production. Everything was top notch from the sound system, props, lighting and especially the performers. By far the best talent I've seen this side of Broadway. Very disappointed! I have gone to the flat rock Playhouse to see different plays and was happy! This weekend family and friends went to see the jungle book and it was horrible. The set was pretty but the play was not good at all! The roles were really off and the costumes were not to par! If the actors didn't say who they were no one would have known. I saw A Christmas Carol last night and really enjoyed myself. This was my first time visiting the Flatrock Playhouse, but I am a big theatre nerd so I was very excited to finally see one of my favorite plays here! The theatre was BIG, much bigger than I was expecting, but also felt very intimate. The seats were comfortable and it was easy to get to and from the restrooms and concession. We bought our tickets over the phone and the gentleman was very helpful, as a matter of fact, they found us during intermission to give us even BETTER seats because nobody claimed them! The talent was above and beyond, I actually cried through most of the play. The theatre manager listed some plays such as Little Shop of Horrors and Annie as plays to come, so I can't wait to return! read more

Hey whatsup? Flat Rock Playhouse is kewl. But some things are a little assey. The productions are kewl. My big likes them and he's picky. He even took a date there and had a good time. He needs that because he's recently divorced and very vulnerable, so please keep this theatre in business so he can keep his ego up. Otherwise he'll be on the couch for days watching UFC. The only problems are that it's on a confusing mountain road and when you're trying to find it in the dark at night before a show it's hard to see and sometimes the gps doesn't work so why don't they have a freakin' LIGHT on their SIGN?! And when you get there why do the seats have duplicate numbers?! You have to note whether you're in Row R Seat 15 LEFT or Row R Seat 15 RIGHT. It's confusing, especially when you're on a date trying to appear suave, which my big is not very good at because he's an academic with anxiety disorder and it already was set off by the dark sign and now they get in the wrong seats and then when he tries to go to the bathroom there's no sign indicating where it is when you're inside the theatre what is wrong with the signage issues at this place!?!?! The last time I saw a production at the Flat Rock Playhouse, I attended the showing of "Tuna Goes to Las Vegas", had been given free tickets. In the past I had thoroughly enjoyed such plays as "Sound of Music", "Fiddler on the Roof", "Singin" in the Rain", "Man of LaMancha", and various Agatha Christy mysteries and Rogers and Hammerstein musicals. The current offering didn't sound up to those, but I thought I'd try it anyway. Although the characters from the little town of Tuna had a heartwarming and humorous feel to them, I have never seen so many references to rear ends, displays of decorated rear ends, and other homosexual innuendos in anything I've watched anywhere. I was deeply disturbed and would have left, but my car was blocked in and it was cold outside so I had to endure to the end. I could tell others were uncomfortable as well. Apparently, the new management at the Playhouse had changed it into something trashy and totally foreign to the mountain heritage and values of Hendersonville. I am very sorry for that - it is a great loss. That play was the last time I visited the Playhouse and will remain so until some new management gets in there with a sensitivity for Hendersonville values and wholesome entertainment. read more

I've been coming to shows here for quite a few years and it never occurred to me to write a review till now. The reason it popped into my head now is because we bought tickets to a show for three days from now 4 months ago and totally forgot about them. We have since moved across the state and cannot make the performance we bought tickets for. I called in hopes that I might be able to reschedule and it was the smoothest most wonderful experience ever. I explained that we wouldn't be able to make the show due to moving but later dates would be possible and we worked out new tickets for a date that worked without any trouble or hesitation on their end. This along would warrant a 5 star review but really the best most 5 star worthy aspect of this business is the wonderful performances they produce. Every show I've ever seen here has been spectacular in every way. I would recommend a show here to anybody, even a New Yorker or Londonite on vacation. read more

My friends and I had a delightful time last night seeing the production Hank Williams: Lost Highway. The staff was beyond polite and helpful, and the theater was absolutely beautiful. The seating was comfortable, and the snacks at intermission were delectable. I was transfixed by the players who did such a great job bringing the story to life. So amazed by the whole experience! Parking was not an issue, they do a great job running the whole thing, we didn't have any issue getting out at all. Definitely can not wait to see the next play. read more

Three Musketeers was a wonderful performance in a really nice venue!

My friends and I were pleasantly surprised at the level of this production for "My Fair Lady!" The playhouse is a bit hard to find, but GPS helped tremendously. Restrooms are outside. Our tickets were on will call and the entrance beckoned you further inside where we were met by a greeter and two ushers. Seats were easy to find and visibility was great. The lighting and sound technicians were spot on and the performers were excellent caliber: Broadway, and southeast region. The Playhouse is well supported by businesses and the private sector and is very enjoyable. We were tourists in the area, but will definitely include the Playhouse again. read more

Just got back from Willie Wonka Play. Outstanding. Lots of fun for families. Older folks loved it and the younger ones sang along and we're excited throughout. Scott, who played Willie Wonka, was excellent as always. The children in the show were adorable and must have made parents and grandparents proud. A must see show. We had a fabulous time last night at "9 to 5." What a wonderful performance-the music was great and the show was absolutely hysterical. I think I was laughing out loud most of the performance. Went last year for a wonderful Christmas production. The cast and presentation were really good and thoroughly enjoyed the show. It was also my 92 year old Aunt's first time there and she very much enjoyed it. Would highly recommend for a holiday outing. I live in Virginia and only go with my Aunt when visiting. read more
