When I was new to CoVA about 4 years ago, my go to unique shop was A. Dodson's on Colley Avenue and on Laskin's Road. I loved to purchase Uno de 50 jewelry especially when they're on sale! Both stores have since closed except for the Suffolk location. So even when it's a further trek for me to visit, it's still a treat to just walk around and see the unique items they carry. Zero star rating if possible. I loved coming here to shop and seeing all of the unique gifts. While recently shopping there with my child, we came across Christmas dish towels that were displayed out in the open, at a child's height which read, "I fucking love Christmas". I cannot imagine a more raunchy and tasteless item to sell in an otherwise classy BOUTIQUE. I was thoroughly offended. The cashier informed me the towels were ordered and displayed by the OWNER! They thought they were funny. Very sad. I used to drive 30 miles to shop here...One less customer. read more

I've been driving past this spot for years and always wanted to stop in but it's really hard to find - I mean - I have a general idea where it is and that it's here but I always drive past it and then have to turn around to come back and just never really felt like committing. I always said, "Well, next time..." So finally I stopped in last weekend while in Smithfield for a Vintage market. There are tons and tons of items in here you can find gifts and home decor and jewelry and clothing and perfumes. Housewares and cups and whatever. It's full of things. Literally thousands of them. Charming little place, no doubt. Lots of variety in their gifts and such. It's a bit hard to navigate though as there are some narrow spots here and there and I felt like my bag would knock over a few things every time I moved. There is a room somewhere in the back where all the dream catchers are that feels magical with all the lighting. Def my favorite section of the entire store. Felt a bit pricey to me, but obviously that depends on who you are, your budget and such. I think I'll stick with the Virginia Beach location though, as not only it is closer to me, but I also seem to like its selection, environment, and customer service better. read more

This location is where it all began. If driving down bridge road during the current road work that is taking place around it you can easily pass it as it looks like a house instead of a normal store front. There isn't much difference in this location from the Norfolk location that I frequent. It is much larger which allows you to move around the store easier without knocking into something at every turn. The women in the store are a little more into their jobs and doing a good job at selling me their items, asking me what I was looking for and if there was anything in the other store that I loved. The Norfolk store saleswomen typically stand behind the counter so there isn't much interaction. There is a lot to see in this store and you can easily miss something wonderful if you move to fast. I could easily spend a few hours in the store doing some damage which will have to be on another trip separate from this one. read more

My parent's 35th wedding anniversary was on April 12, 2020. I needed to send them a gift since I we are all staying home in leiu of COVID-19. I looked online for local shops that were located near my parents' home. I found this wonderful shop and the perfect little something for the occasion. I placed my order on Thurdsay, April 9th and it was hand delivered, not shipped, and left on my parents' doorstep on Saturday, April 11, 2020. WOW! So impressed by the beautiful gift, which my parents LOVED, and the free local delivery. I then ordered something to be sent to me and received it just a day or two later, I live in Norfolk. beyond beautiful store with eclectic variety of options. they have some mudpie brand stuff that you can find at Hallmark but the selection at Dodson's far exceeds anything at a Hallmark. The staff here are amazing. Sweet, sincere, hilarious, & knowledgable. The decor is crafty and adorable. They have a variety of items...some seasonal, some southern, religious, clothing, bridal, children's, kitchen, candles, scents, soaps, funny and quirky knock knock notepads, you name it. I don't think this place is kitschy at all as others have noted in their reviews. I also think that no matter where you're from or where you've been, A Dodson's is all around a unique and memorable shopping experience. We have friends in VA Beach and always go through town, Suffolk, on our way over. A Dodson's is a must stop for my wife. They turned us on to HUBs peanuts and I'm addicted. We've bought some antiques and lots of great stuff over the years. If I had to make a comparison to a corporate equivalent I'd say it's cooler mix between Anthropologie, Restoration Hardware, and Williams Sonoma. The only negative I can think of is its a bit hard to find even with all the signs. It's on a curve and I wind up passing it sometimes, and have to double back. Not sure what others are commenting about with being pricy most of the stuff the store is about on par with what we've been able to get online. It's always a pleasant stop and we never leave empty handed. It's definitely worth stopping if you're in town and would venture to say worth a trip over if close by. read more

Not only did they have the item I wanted at a good price but I also received an introductory coupon. I ordered Cat Studio State glasses through the mail from A. Dodson's. I'm not really sure if they came from the Suffolk, Norfolk or Virginia Beach store, but the service was exceptional! My first order was for three glasses. I was delightfully surprised how quickly I received them. A few weeks later I ordered three more glasses and they also arrived right away. My daughter then ordered four more for me for a Mother's Day gift. Two of the glasses wound up with defects and they replaced them immediately, even including a hand written note with them. Cat Studio said it is rare for the glasses to have problems, and ensured A. Dodson they would replace them. I am most impressed with A. Dodson's impeccable customer service. They have multiple ways to be contacted and they respond right away. The packing of the glasses was excellent. I will not hesitate to mail order other items I like and I can't wait to visit one of their stores. I am so grateful for their stellar customer service. read more

The service was exceptional and I do wish I remembered the young lady's name who assisted me. The owner amazes me will her selection of items in the store. I shopped for almost an hour because there are so many unique options. I have been going to this shop since the doors opened and my suggestion to anyone who is traveling down Bridge Road in Suffolk, Va. is to stop in. You will not be disappointed.
