It took 6 days to get a response to my request for a quote, and then the only response was to send pictures. That's not unreasonable, but 6 days is. In the interim, I was able to see that there is no license listed for this company. My back yard is full of palm trees. Previous owner put in about 25 trees. And now they've grown so much it's a hazard to trim. I wanted the tallest 5 taken out and put out a request on yelp through projects. I got 7 out of 8 requests back and 6 good quotes. One guy obviously didn't want the job and bid $4500 while everyone else was 1100 to 1800 range I decided on A Cut Above for 2 reasons, they seems like good people and they were going to use a crane to remove the trees. I didn't want an all day affair where they take them down in sections and destroy my grass and yard by throwing the sections down leaving divots in my lawn. They showed up on time, but we had to wait for the crane a while. Once the crane showed up they were quick. Cut the tree at the bottom and hoisted it out in one piece. Was really impressive. They also took extreme care of my gate when bringing in the grinder for the stump. They removed the gate and put it back afterwards. I requested to cut 2 trees that kept growing wild hitting our home and street sign. A Cut Above had great communication and price. When Luis arrived, he said the pics I sent didn't show how big the trees really were, but he didn't raise the price. The 2 man crew worked quickly and efficiently completing the job surprisingly in an hour. I'm usually too lazy to write a review, but I was really impressed with this company and how friendly they were. They weren't able to grind the stumps due to the nearby irrigation lines, but he was able to cut it low enough to the ground and cover it with some rocks that I didn't know where the stumps were until he pointed them out. read more

Luis and his team removed a few small trees, a very large tree, and trimmed a very, VERY tall tree in front of my house. They were responsive via text message or phone call and they arrived promptly and on time for all 3 appointments that they set. From quoting to project day, everything went off without hitch. Some of the branches of the tree fell onto my neighbors lawn and they cleaned up every piece of debris. I left my gates open and totally trusted the team to do whatever they needed to do while I was away at work. When I came home, it was as if they hadn't been there and the trees I magically disappeared and my tree was trimmed. I was really hoping to have a great experience with this company the way so many others have shared. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I included several images in the post regarding the condition our property was left after they completed the work. This job started on Monday morning, they even arrived a bit early! There was confusion over what we agreed to as far as what would be removed, so that should have been a sign I guess. I did message the company prior to them coming out about exactly what they would be doing, and he only responded to the part regarding the price, so I thought everything was clear. Once we came to an agreement for an additional cost, the crew started working rather quickly to cut down the trees. When they got two of them down, they went and got some drinks from McDonald's and such--it was hot outside, I completely understand. They came back and continued working and started grinding the stumps. Of the three trees on one side, one of them was ground PERFECTLY! I was so excited, until I saw the other two. One of our trees was planted with a ReBar (metal) stake and it grew inside of the tree. I didn't blame them at all for not being able to grind that stump completely because none of us knew that was in there. The other tree had no issues, it was just not ground completely. So I'm not sure what the excuse was there. All of the workers ended up leaving Monday and told us they would return in the afternoon to complete the cleanup and collect payment. They came back and removed some of the large wood pieces in front of the house that they left behind, but didn't come back onto the property to clean. I messaged Luis the next day to touch base with him, sent him pictures and everything that needed to be finished. He came to my house alone and with no vehicle to clean up, but insisted on collecting a significant portion of payment for the job. I explained to him why I felt uncomfortable given the circumstances with giving him more than half of the compensation when so much still needed to be done, including showing him the trash his workers left behind (drinking cups, water jug, powerade bottle).He said okay fine keep your money until we are done and stormed off...that was on Tuesday. Two days later (Thursday) I get a message in Yelp that he will be here between 4 and 6:30 to complete the cleanup and collect payment. The two men showed up at 5:41 and started cleaning the pile...but connected a hose to spray it down. At the time I wasn't sure what they were doing, but when they came to the front door sometime after 7 to collect payment, I was over it. I gave them the check and they left. My husband came home and looked at the mess that remained in our yard to utter disappointment. Today, after the mulch had more time to dry, I took another picture of how much they left behind. This is not what I paid for, not what I asked, and certainly nowhere near the level of service others have received. I was hoping to use them again to remove the remaining trees when we are ready, but now I see that would be a disaster in the making. The one star is because the experience started off fantastic, I just don't know where or why it fell apart. read more

I honestly did not want to have to write this. The first of communications were spot in and very courteous. We discussed several options for my project at my home and decided on a basic trimming down of our tree at home. The agreement was specific, Trim the tree, clean up and leave firewood. We would have been happy to keep our own wood from the tree but were convinced to exchange it with their stock of dried wood ready to go for usage. We specifically wanted firewood for our needs at our home. After getting the job completed, I reviewed the work and the grounds. I was disappointed to see a large, dangerous and unsafe block of tree limb dangling in the air above where my wife stood. Fortunately, I was aware of this and took precautions myself to remove this from the tree above us. Essentially, I believe the limbs were cut in a brash, swift way to get the job done quick rather than effective. We were promised day after day, week after week that we will receive firewood from their stock. Due to high winds over April, I understood for a reasonable amount of time the delay. Now, May 26th, and all there has been have text conversations saying, "we have not been forgotten", "happy to drop this off at your home on the side of the house" etc etc I am mostly disappointed because I was kind enough to tip the young gentleman an extra-large bill for his communication, kindness and multiple attempts to stop by my home prior to the job to fully understand what we wanted. But since this job has been completed, it's cash in the pocket and out of sight, out of mind in my opinion. The job was somewhat appropriately priced, and I thought it was kind of me and my wife to offer a tip in these times where people can use a little extra for their pockets. I feel as if the amount paid, and the agreement not being met is grounds for a small claims suit. These experiences lead me to be much more cautious while negotiating jobs through YELP, Angies or any other business platforms and ultimately leaves a bad taste in feeling confident with small business such as "A Cut Above Tree" services. The quote was good for stump grinding but we weren't told it would cost $180 more to dispose of some of the mulch. We had to clean our yard of the mud and dirt left behind by them. First the convenience, it was great that I could text him a picture, without having the hassle of giving all of my information and having to schedule someone to come out and see it. After reviewing the picture, we spoke over the phone and he was kind, down to earth, and professional. He explained to me the different options, the process and what he thought would be the best option. We moved in recently and there were 4 California Pepper trees that were approximately 25 years old and all ranging from about 35-50 ft tall. After reaching out for quotes on Yelp, Luis showed up the next day to look at our trees, offer his advice, and gave a very reasonable quote. Just a few days later, his crew came out and did a great job removing one of the trees, trimming the other 3 extensively, and cleaning up after themselves. I recently got several quotes for removing a 30 foot palm tree from my very tight backyard. A Cut Above was the the cheapest on the list but the were very competitively priced but what I liked is they were insured and told me how they were going to the job the right way. I couldn't be happier with the outcome as I was really worried about the wall, fence and hot tub which were all within about 10 feet of this enormous tree. They told me they would be here Monday morning and just as I am sitting in my office working away here comes the crane and Felix and Ernesto. They made quick work of the tree pulling it up and over the wall with the crane as to not damage the wall, astroturf, fence or hot tub. Next thing I know the tree was gone and I heard them grind the stump. They were even nice enough to put my replacement in the hole as they backfilled the grinding hole!
