About a month ago I sent an email asking if I could come look at their costumes. It says on their website they do "individual costume rentals". I am looking for a halloween costume wanted to browse what they have, but also want to find a separate 1800s dress that I could possibly get made or ordered (this one would have been the need for an appointment because I want to but it not rent it). It then says on the site due to covid "If at all possible, please make sure to call us for an appointment before coming in" I asked about an appointment for the 1800 dress. They replied "we do not have time for individual costumes at this time!! I asked back do I have to have an appointment or can we like a regular shop just come browse and look around, pick a costume on out own. No reply for a month. Finally I decided to just stop by. The door says they are open, the door is locked and a sign says appointment only!! I feel like I stopped by years ago around 2018-19 hoping to find a costume and it said the same on the door. But they will not put that on their website, or reply to an email asking. Because their website is very unclear. Because "If at all possible, please make sure to call us for an appointment before coming in" suggest you can also just come in to browse. Extremely sad. I do hope another shop opens up around here with real costumes! Since Lucy in disguise closed, there is nothing within many hours that I know of with options. read more

Wow! What an incredible experience I was needing a costume for a masquerade murder party and stumbled across this establishment online. Noticed that they were by appointment only. A short email conversation back-and-forth to clarify what I was looking for and the theme of the party. When I arrived, Jennifer had several great options for me, and we were able to piece together a fantastic outfit for my upcoming party Jennifer took the time to work with me and build a great costume. I wanted a dinosaur costume for my son's birthday -- it was a spontaneous choice. We called and found that this company had one available and we could pick it up within a few hours (you have to call ahead to make an appointment). We walked in and were led to a giant warehouse space filled with costumes. She handed me the costume and I felt reasonably confident that my husband could pull it off. In the dimly lit space, it seemed like a good costume. When she said it was $100 to rent, it sounded steep, but I know that professional costumes can be pricy. I paid and left. When my husband tried on the costume, it was apparent that I had been ripped off. It definitely looked homemade and more than that, it was stained and had remnants of glue stuck to it. The costume head we were given seemed mismatched and didn't fit properly. I was disappointed, but I had waited til the last minute, so we soldiered on. I did make a point to let the owner know that I was disappointed and I pointed out the stains and glue marks and said I felt that for $100 it was not a professional looking costume. She apologized and said that's why she recommends that people try on costumes first before renting them (she did not make this recommendation to me previously). She made no attempt to refund or credit me, unfortunately. I always feel a pang of sadness to leave a negative review for a small local business, but I feel like I gave the owner an opportunity to right a wrong. She was pleasant and cheerful, but the quality and customer service is not there, and I will not return for future costume needs. read more

I was looking for quality custom costumes and masks for a work function and found this place online. I checked the hours and drove nearly an hour to check it out. As soon as I walk in a woman sharply says, "I'm by appointment only" without anything as simple as a greeting. I stated that I didn't see anything about appointments online, and all she replied was, "It's written on the door. You can leave and call for an appointment." I told her I'm from out of town, and she just laughed. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER. It's a shame too, she lost out on several hundred dollars worth of business. read more

I totally understand this request of customers. So, make your appointment and be ready for knock your socks off customer service. Extremely disappointed in the service here. I was shopping around for a costume and saw this one online so I thought I'd stop by. The woman up front (I'm assuming the owner) was unfriendly and pretentious. I had no idea it was appointment only and I was just looking at the pictures and things she'd done...when she rudely asked me who I was. Then proceeded to tell me "I'm appointment only" in the absolute rudest tone. I work in retail so I know how to treat customers. I was very interested in making an appointment, but I won't now because I have no interest doing business with someone so degrading. Even the way she was talking to the customers in there was awful. If you don't want anyone besides those with appointments to come in, then put up a sign. I gave 2 stars because whoever makes the costumes here is amazing, but the store itself deserves 0/5. read more

I have been renting costumes from A Cut Above for many years now. We always get more than what we need. Everything is accessorized beautifully. When we have had to change pieces out due to students growing, Ramona is very accommodating. Often she will have a few options ready so we have choices. The prices here are excellent. I heard about this place when I was in a production at a local theatre, and the lady of the store costumed the entire production with only our measurements from her own research. Everyone couldn't stop talking about how perfect the costumes fit our production with all of the costume changes and different scenes. I decided to visit the store after the production for a costume party, and realized she doesn't take walk-ins (only appointments). I called from the parking lot, and she took me in on the same day. I was about to make a 4 star review from the inconvenience, but the private appointment was awesome. You have an hour dedicated to you for your individual costume creation, and she even sized my costume for me on her sewing machine in the appointment. The lady took my random picture of Lord Farquaad from Shrek, and made me into the costume prize winner for my party. This costume was a legit custom costume that you would never find in a package. read more

Great selection. My daughter needed costumes for her musical/play in middle school. The owner of this store was quite helpful and was able to fit my daughter with the appropriate costumes. The owner of this store works with MANY schools in the Austin area in helping with the production of many plays and musicals by providing costume support. By appointment only, so know that before you go there. This place is located in a warehouse type park. The owner does NOT operate like a run-of-the-mill costume shop. Sounds like the earlier reviewer did not understand the nature of this costume shop and he was heavy handed in his review. This lady, Ramona, is a jewel and is integral to the success of many school drama productions and should be receiving accolades instead of a condemnation for operating her business by appointment only. She has to do that or she could not operate her small business. She is a staff of one. read more
