I went to ABTRS in 2016. I have been to several rehabs over the last decade (this is.a testament to my issues with substance not an issue with the rehabs themselves). ABTRS was the ABSOLUTE worst. I watched the Drs belittle and humiliate one patient that they then 'kicked' out of rehab that night who left and od'd in an alley... oh and did I mention she was 17, SEVENTEEN never should have been allowed to leave without an adult Supervision. Many years after I left they sent me to collections with a 24,000 bill even though my insurance ALSO paid out everything that was billed to them. Then several years later as we were filing for bankruptcy they sent their shady attorney to my bankruptcy lawyer spouting some action they were taking against me that if I didnt pay them would result in me not only NOT being able to file bankruptcy but NEVER being able to file bankruptcy again... Unfortunatley my bankruptcy lawyer sucked and came to us telling us we had to do pay them.... we had to take out a 401k loan for $17k (again they were PAID BY MY INSURANCE)... to get them to go away... oh and then in my next bankruptcy hearing (of course after they had received the $17k)... the Judge was LIVID and went OFF on their lawyer... saying what they did to me was highly unetchical and immoral and who the HELL *judges words to them* did they think they were that none of my other creditors were getting anything but due to bullying, immoral and REPREHENSIBLE behavior and bullying (again words of judge) they received a check for $17k. The judge said that he was disgusted by their immoral tactics and bullying preying upon people that were vulnerable searching for help. Yep, ABTRS is money hungry... and AWFUL to their clients.... I would NEVER recommend this treatment facility. read more

I had a great experience at A Better Today for treatment. Total I was there ten months and benefited and enjoyed from my whole stay there. I did detox, inpatient rehab, outpatient and live in their independent living apartment. The facility is very nice. They supplied food the whole 10 months. The staff are all wonderful kind, knowledgeable and helpful. I would definitely recommend going here to help with alcoholism or addiction. This place is the worst. Before we dropped off my sister, we were told everything was all good including insurance, medical certificate etc. that everything was taken care of. Well my sister found out after 3 days that the doctor has not signed the medical certificate and they keep insisting that my sister needs to stay for 90 days even before they evaluated her. This place is horrible. Don't take your family or friends here. Everyone here are unprofessional and rude. Don't trust them. read more

. I've waited to write this review so it wouldn't be influenced by emotions I had at the time my son (JB) was at ABTRS. JB was in his mid-30s; he had a new baby girl, and he had gotten so bad he was living in the streets. I feared he would die before he got to ABTRS--he was bad. ABTRS facility was nice; I liked their program at first & I thought his therapist was professional, knowledgeable & caring. She was very helpful & supportive to JB & me (his mother) throughout his stay, and at the time I had considered it a miracle that my son was recovering & growing in there. . . Then near the end of his time I told his therapist my greatest fear is when he's IN rehab he doesn't have all the stresses & fears he'll be experiencing in the real world. I said it's easy to 'stay' sober in rehab with all the counseling & support--but what support will he have when he's out for unfinished court business he has to deal with while looking for a job (with a criminal record) & worrying about earning enough to pay his rent while going to mandatory parent meetings under the scrutiny of CPS? I told them my son is just barely starting to come around; just beginning to see the light, and now you're sending him to aftercare & his last 6 weeks of intensive meetings at a halfway house? I asked what kind of support he'd have there & I was told he can reach out for counseling any time-- What I found out is after all that support, no professionals are involved in halfway house; all decisions are made by a recovering addict who feels 'If I recovered this way, everyone can." My son lost a job he loved after a few weeks due to having too many commitments (court/CPS); he then ended his relationship with his sig other--then began feeling less-than; like "I've destroyed my life with drugs" & "It's useless to try." .I begged them to work with him; said "He's listening now, please help!" They just said, "Tell him to call," something a man about to give up can't do. The house manager then decided he wasn't driven enough to get another job & kicked him to the street--no hesitation & no regard for how that might destroy his self-esteem, his sobriety. So they get addicts sober; they do what's required, then they don't hesitate to kick a sober struggling addict right back to the street where they started. And even when rent was fully paid by me. . JB went from having full support & counseling & the start of getting his self-esteem back--to being kicked to the curb when he wasn't able to do what a house manager expected of him, and it didn't matter why. Not one person reached out to him, and nobody realized or cared JB's self-esteem was too crushed to reach out to them. So ABTRS will initially get your addict sober, surround him/her with love & concern... then the support ends as they try to begin transitioning back into the real world. read more

I would not recommend this place. My husband was here approximately five years ago. When he detoxed, he went into a psychotic episode. They did not recognize that it was a psychosis. They believed he was simply trying to disturb others. When I called to check on how he was doing they told me he was on his way home and they dropped him off at my doorstep to handle his psychosis. They need to have psychiatrists available on staff that recognize psychotic behavior versus behavioral issues so that people can be given the correct medication and proceed on their course of recovery. At first I was apprehensive about going to a residential treatment facility. My alcoholism and drug use were taking everything away from me including my sanity. I needed help desperately but didn't know where to turn. Luckily, a few friends had found them and they quickly qualified me via my insurance and off I went for the adventure of a lifetime. Overall, I spent close to 5 months at ABT. I wish I could say it was shorter but my disease kept me down for a long time. I learned coping skills and developed long term relationships with both the staff and clients. ABT helped with my transition to the real world as well, taking me to court appointments and job interviews. I can't say enough about ABT. They loved me when I couldn't love myself and showed me how to live. read more

Aside from having been forced to stay in a car after getting upset and kicking the dashboard, (A counselor said I either calm down or they abandon me in the middle of nowhere, with nothing), this program did some real good for me. I felt more prepared to live life, felt stronger and healthier, and my family was really happy to see me look and act so good. Be prepared when you leave though, after a month "break" from normal life, you might backtrack a little and it may be upsetting to some people if you're having such a hard time adjusting or losing sleep. I felt hurt when a counselor told me to "go with god," having had a tattoo that says "sinner" that I got because of a band I like, it made me feel stupid when I should have felt ok there, of all places. My only other issue was having gotten used to living with a bunch of people who very likely criminals, more so than just having carried drugs, as I wasn't really able to tell them apart from normal people. Ok, third, some staff members would say insulting things, like "You're all a bunch of druggies," or "wash your dick beaters." I don't think I should have to deal with anyone like that since it should be more of a sophisticated business and deal with them. So, maybe you'll feel like you're kidnapped and forced to do things, they make you do a lot of homework too, but being clean and sober turned out to be a blessing and changed my life for good in many ways. Just be careful when you leave and get as much advice you can from teachers and counselors. read more

I went through this program almost 6 years ago. STILL CLEAN! ABT got me on the right path and built an amazing foundation for me to have the life I've always dreamed of. Today I get to be happily married, have healed the relationship with the rest of my family, and don't crave drugs or alcohol anymore. I can't say everything there was what I wanted at the time, in fact at the time I really didn't like some of the staff. But when I look back, I didn't like what They were doing because they were right. The Staff at ABT was never rude with me, and they never had a problem pointing out where I needed to grow. I was absolutely nuts when I walked in their door, they actually helped me rather than catering to my every want and desire. A better today is a straight up scam that takes advantage of people when they're at their lowest. They are a for profit company that pretends to be a Christian charity. First of all when they say on the website all insurance companies accepted what they mean is they will take down your insurance information and try to process it but they will almost certainly be rejected. A better today is not licensed or certified by the state or any governing body and they have no medical personnel on staff. Its basically just a super expensive hostel. They have several locations and even an RV (the hotbox) for overflow/complainers. The place I stayed at was disgusting and nothing like the pictures on the website. Your first job when you get there will be to clean the mess the previous tenants left behind. This was not an easy task but they call cleaning "therapy". Most of the staff were horrible and didn't care that a lot of patients were still using. Halfway through my stay I was told my insurance company wasn't covering my stay and asked how I'd like pay the 8k they said I now owed them. For the price I could of just stayed at the Ritz Carlton. Do some research before choosing a sober living facility and make sure you get in writing that your insurance is covering the cost. If you're still reading this, good luck with your recovery and stay strong. Life will get better. Seeking out help is the first step on a long journey. There are some great treatment facilities out there but this is not one of them. read more

The only reason I give such a low rating is that staff member stole clothing from me when they checked me into the house. When I complained I was told that I signed a statement whic basically said they were not responsible for list items while in the program. My clothing was not given to me until some 18 hours after I was admitted and all of my clothing was not there. When I complained I was ignored and basically accused of lying. read more

I went to this horrible place. i slept on urinated beds and the apartments had mold and mildew all over. The therapist i had Lindsay Frye was horrible she played with your mind. She gave a date of release then recinded it because she consulted her higher ups and felt i should not be released. They dont care about your thoughts or the great job you have done since you been there. The management lies to you straight to your face. They get you there and never let you go. They treat like you are a prisoner. They tell your family that they feel you need 90 days whether you do or not They base your stay on how good your insurance is and not how well you progressed. this whole program is a disgrace. The upper management lie directly to your face. Quite a few people leave AMA because the program is so horrible. Dont believe the pictures on the website they are fabricated. My spouse checked in to a better day treatment center in Scottsdale Arizona him back in April he's been there almost 60 days while he was there he's been treated like a number not like a person he has expressed a lot of concerns regarding this place is nothing but an insurance scam what are things that he's concerned about is why I will be in charge so much money in for drug testing and why is it not being sent out for review also I understand that one of the owners or business partner also owns a lot of the methadone clinic's in Scottsdale Arizona as well my spouse has expressed a lot of concerns sample he asked for his medical records they denied it he also asked why he was in detox for so long when he did not need it he also expressed concerns This time I'm not gonna get any more comments regarding the center as for their my spouse and other clients there now will be fine in a class action lawsuit against them I have a recommend anybody looking for a treatment center that you do your homework before you check in also when I went down there to visit I expressed my concerns with the director jorn leblance Best regards read more

A Better Today is not A Better Tomorrow they stoled my money. I signed up for a sixty day program at a cost of $25,000.00 i was in 17 days and a fellow patient threatened my life due to lack of supervision I left there care and went to the Meadows. I asked them for a credit they refused I disputed the amount on my credit card they threatened me. I even asked if I could use the unused treatment and they refused that also. They are very greedy and do not care about being fair with their patients. My fiancee was in treatment in Las Vegas and when they threw him out they didn't even give him a ride to the airport. I totally agree with Joe L. DO NOT GO TO THIS TREATMENT CENTER IT IS A RIP OFF AND THE ARE ONLY MOTIVATED BY THE MIGHTY DOLLAR. My intake person Steven Rice lied to me about the level of care and I feel totally mislead by him right from the start and when I tried to negotiate a compromise I was lied to some more. I went to a better today seeking treatment. The treatment i received was terrible. For starters i was not provided medication to help with alcohol withdrawal which can be deadly. I had to cook my own meals and everyday i spent there i was just sitting around smoking outside. There was a guy in there that was homophobic and constantly telling me to speak like a man and telling me snitches get stiches. So as you can imagine i felt unsafe in an environment that should be safe. Then i asked to leave on day 4 because it was no different than detoxing at home. They told me i could walk if i wanted to leave and would not let me use the phone to call an Uber and didn't let me have my license or phone back. So i left via ambulance and was able to get on a flight home. Thank god! In addition they told my family i would die if i didn't stay and that i was a manipulator. This of course is to continue receiving payment from my insurance. Then i received a $7,000 bill for them doing absolutely nothing. In addition, i have remained sober 90 days thanks to friends and family. I'm hiring an attorney to assist with my case. read more

The best decision of my life! I checked into ABT on 3/22/2016 and I will have eleven months sober on the 22! All the staff here was wonderful! Sharmyn, Vicki, Larry, Kailee, Jackie, Adan, Jamie, Kat, Jordan, Chris and all the others sorry if I forgot to mention you! They played a monumental part of my foundation in recovery and if you told me a year ago that I would be living the life that I am today, I would tell you that you're crazy. On February 1, 2016 I was released from the department of corrections in Arizona and immediately relapsed. Within a month and a half I was an absolute train wreck, I was still on my parents insurance and this opportunity arose. This was the first treatment center that I had went to where I had become 100% willingly to do what was asked of me. They made a very individualized treatment plan for me and I actually followed it for once and The results still continue to show and improve. I am forever grateful for a better today recovery services and all that staff members and clients that were there with me through my recovery journey. Thank you all so much! ABTS in Scottsdale was not a good experience. The staff needs training. Clients were given classes in how to communicate better yet the staff was disrespectful in the manner they spoke to clients. I was hollered at twice and I am 57 years old. I do not cause problems and if I was disruptive- hollering at clients is unacceptable. Other clients spoke in front of staff with prejudicial remarks and nothing was said. God was disrespected in front of me during prayer and staff said nothing; yet small rules seemed really important like I had a couple of granola bars in my bookbag and that was in my bedroom and I got a warning for food in my bedroom. We had to cook our own meals. People with special needs were allowed in IOP with no medical staff on duty at the living quarters. My friend had Bronchitis and did not get her inhaler or her antibiotics for two weeks after she went to the ER because the doctor from ABT had to approve the medicine. read more

I checked into ABT on Aug 11, 2015. My experience was like a crazy roller coaster ride! The facilities were great. The kitchens were always stocked with plenty of great food & lots of stuff to keep you busy throughout your day. The major problem with ABT was consistency among the staff. One staff member would promise the world & the other would say it was against ABT policy. I have never seen so many patient rights violated in my life. I have never attended another treatment facility but for the amount of money I paid out to get baby sat by people less qualified than me both academically & logically was shocking! They tell you that you are all equals which is total bullshit! I believe in AA & the twelve steps. (One of the things I picked up while in ABT). I'm not the same as the person next to me no matter was allergy you say I have. I have different standards, morals, family, & friends. My bottom wasn't the same as the guy next to me so don't treat me like it was. If you plan to attend ABT you will meet some really great staff members. (Larry, Chris, Seth, Ryan, Vicky, Cat, Tim). You will also be judged by more than a dozen other staff that don't know how to treat addicts & their behavior. They violate many of your patient rights. Get ready to hold your bladder because you will lose visitation & phone use if you can't hold it during group. Medical attention is sloppy at best while attending the program. It costs roughly $2000 per day at detox which you will stay for around 30 days. They will tell you 7-14. They are more concerned about petty shit that drugs being brought into the facilities. I will take a lot of good memories away from ABT & thank them for introducing me into the AA program! Horrible experience. I hardly know where to begin. First off, I am willing to bet that employees of the company posted these 2 other reviews. They sound like a commercial, and the comment about having a lot of one on one time with your therapist is absolutely not true. Of the myriad of complaints that the clients of this program had, lack of time with your therapist was one. Clients get only 50 minutes once per week with their therapist, and oftentimes, it takes them a week or two to even assign a client to a therapist. I knew one guy that was on his 3rd week there, and he still had no therapist! I've worked in healthcare for 17 years, and I could not believe the paucity of quality therapeutic services provided. Approximately half the time an intern oversees group sessions, and oftentimes, clients are picked to lead the group, with the counselor saying very little. Sometimes we would spend an entire hour just analyzing a paragraph or short story. It was painful. There is also no psychiatrist on staff, and a family doctor is contracted to come in and see clients 3 days a week, and he manages medications. I had a situation where my blood pressure was extremely high, and steady at 189/98. I was having chest pain and shortness of breath. I was really frightened, and requested to see him. He declined, saying he would see me in 2 weeks! Unbelievable. The house manager was scared and called the paramedics out that Fri evening. Needless to say, in order to cover himself, the doctor sees me first thing Monday morning. As for paying for the treatment, my spouse and I were told that of my TWO insurance policies, neither covered substance abuse treatment. I trusted what they said...I could not fathom a healthcare provider giving misinformation. My spouse was desperate, and put nearly $16K on credit cards. I had to leave the treatment program a couple of weeks early due to internal bleeding and subsequent emergency surgery, and then the billing manager actually tried to withhold my refund for days not there!! Seeing how unethical they were with this, I then called the insurance company, and found that I had 100% coverage! I was livid. The CFO called me (now the truth comes out) and she explains that they just did not accept my particular policy because they felt that the reimbursement was not enough. I also had AHCCCS and she said that they did not work with them (more misinformation)...even though I knew a guy in the program that had AHCCCS and it paid 100% of the treatment. You have sign a contract that states if you leave treatment early, they will not refund any money. Basically, they want to get you to cash pay because it is much more money than what insurance reimburses, and they have complete control. It's really sad and disturbing that they prey upon and mislead families and individuals who are in a state of crisis. Had they have been honest upfront, I never would have gone there, and would have selected another facility. They knew that. Who in their right mind would pay $16k when they have 100% coverage through their insurance?! Because they pulled a fast one, I now have to deal with the insurance, which is what they should have done. They've tried multiple times to give me a superbillI (a line item statement of charges & billing codes for services) which I could give to my insurance comp. I had to explain what this was, and they never did get it right. I also was in no mental state to sign contracts, and they had me do this the day I came in. I have no recollection of that first week, let alone signing any paperwork. I had overdosed on pain meds, and had no mental clarity whatsoever upon admission. I may litigate. I was detoxing that first week and spent the first three days lying on a cot in a supply room, which they absurdly called the "serenity room." It was horrible. Comically, they told my spouse upon admission that they had this wonderful, innovative program for treating pain. They had nothing. I asked the doctor about different methods and modalities for controlling severe and chronic pain without opiates. He actually said, "You take ibuprofen just like everyone else." Thanks doc. Clients often found stolen their personal food that they had purchased, and on at least one occasion, the client traced it back to a staff member. The clinical staff rarely returns phone calls to family members. My spouse said that at the family mtgs, other people were complaining about this as well. My family would try to get information, and when they did get any, it took multiple phone calls, and much time to get a response. I've also been trying to get my medical records, and to date they have only provided roughly half of them, and ignored my requests for the remainder. I am filing a HIPAA violation with the government in order to get the rest. I could write a book about this experience, but suffice it to say, it was awful. I strongly advise you to go elsewhere. There are much better treatment programs in the area. read more
