I found these guys through a word-of-mouth recommendation. I went in to get a key duplicated (specialized), and the guy looked at it, said it was cut wrong, and polished the original key to "read" properly before duplicating it. Sure enough, as soon as I tried the original key, it worked significantly better than before; a lot of the sticking I assumed was from the lock turned out to be from the poorly cut key. Then I got them to change the locks to my front door. He gave me a couple of options for the type and pricing of locks. When he came, he showed me how the new lock was better than what it was replacing, and that while there were still better locks, they were probably overkill for my needs. He also adjusted a lot of poorly installed hardware that he didn't need to, but he took pride in his work and it showed. Needed to copy keys quickly and found this place on Yelp. It was close to my apartment, and super convenient. When I came in, I asked the man working how long it would be to do the key, he said, "it depends on the key". He looked at it and put it in some machine that copied it in two seconds! A-Art is a family-owned business (actually related to Ruzi, the jeweler who used to be in the space next door before the theater was renovated) and they're fair and honest. A long time ago I had fixed grills and a fireman's gate made for my St. Mark's apartment; although I've since moved, the lock on my front door is still from them. I still go to them to get keys copied; I've actually been to other locksmiths who made me keys that didn't work! How do they live with themselves? These guys are great; nobody ever told me before I moved to New York I'd have a favorite locksmith, but I do and it's these guys. read more

I like these guys. I walked over here a couple weeks ago to copy some keys for a business associate of mine (look at me being all cagey). One of the guys was standing outside, leaning against the door frame. Seems like it was a slow day. He walked in with us and just as I was about to start taking the keys off the ring he said, "don't bother with that, it'll just take up more time, I can do it faster with them on." About a minute later, we were presented with five shiny new keys. Service and quality: The guy was very quick, professional, knew what he was doing, and as the previous reviews mentioned "no need to take the key out of the chain". The only glitch would be that one of the copies seems a bit too roughly cut, jamming a bit while using the first couple of times. I love my deadbolt now that Frank put in a new cylinder for me. I paid for a new pick-proof cylinder for my existing deadbolt (the house call was included in the price). When Frank arrived he saw how rickety and misaligned my deadbolt was. In addition to installing the shiny new cylinder, he spent a long time realigning the deadbolt that I hadn't even purchased from him. Now I can lock the door very easily from the inside or out (so I get to appreciate the great work several times a day, forcing me to write this review). This would not have been the case if Frank hadn't put in so much extra effort beyond doing the work to which we had agreed ahead of time. read more

Wowza. All the reviews are 100% right! I came to the shop at 5:35pm on a Thursday and left with 2 sets of brand new sets of keys by ... probabably... 5:42pm! This is definitely a no-frills type place and it's obvious that the guys prefer efficiency. Note that there's a 10-dollar minimum for credit cards which may make it difficult if you're only looking to duplicate one or two keys. 2012: They were the only one of 3 local well reviewed places I called that quickly got back to me and replaced my lock within half an hour. (Locksmiths seem to use outside contractors to handle lock outs). The others either did not call back or eventually updated their answering message saying they had suspended service because of the gas shortage caused by Hurricane Sandy. Update 6-8-2016. Today I had A-art change the cylinder above the doornob after a roomate moved out and all went quite smoothly . Since it was during regular hours I got Frank, one of the 2 partners, who was quite helpful, coming back with a missing screw that he discovered on the door hardware. I have been using A-art since moving in around the corner from them 21 years ago and have always received good service and advice. My apartment had been broken into twice in the year before I moved in. The high quality top lock A-Art put in 21 years ago has scared away all burglers since then just as A-art had predicted. read more

I just used these guys once, but they were solid, and I was shocked at the one star review (a review which gave no reason). My bike lock jammed up beyond repair, locked to a tree on 1st Ave. I called these guys, and 10 minutes later a guy shows up, checked my ID, and then saws it open. For the second time in a single month, the same spindle broke - a $2 piece they're selling for $20. They didn't even give me a receipt when I asked them for it (I wonder if they pay taxes). Disreputable. I was locked out and called them. When asked the price, they said "$65 to open your locked door". The locksmith arrives half an hour later, takes a look at my lock and tells me it cannot be picked. Then says it will be $200 something to drill it open and then the lock has to be replaced, which they can also conveniently do for $130 more. I declined. 10 minutes later, I bump into a service man in my building and he picks my lock in 2 minutes read more

This is about as straightforward a business as you can find in Manhattan. You need spare keys, they have hundreds they can burn for you. It took less time for me to procure three keys at A-Art than it did to actually open their front door. Came here to make copies of my apartment keys. The walls are covered with literally thousands of every kind of key, waiting to be cut to match yours. Mailbox keys cost slightly more since the machine has two cut both sides of the key, but I was in and out with a hot (no, seriously. The keys were warm) set of keys in less than 5 min. Docked a star because the worker didn't acknowledge the other people who came into the store or answer the phone while he was working. I get that you have to pay attention, but not even a head nod. These guys are the best, most honest and humble people! I have to say that for the past 15 years whenever i need locksmith services i go to these guys. I always have some crazy job for them that i never feel can be done. They always get it done and for the right price. My last job was for a Multilock key. The thing is,i had no key and no card. the lock is installed in my jeep and costs $600 and about $100 or so to uninstall so i was hoping that they could work some of their magic. I managed to remove the lock mechanism from my jeep and brought it in. Clint Eastwood could not have been more cool and calm. He took it and 3 hours later i had 2 keys and a card for $35 bucks! That was "VERY" fair and afterwards i decided to go check around for the purpose of this review and confirm what i already knew. I went to 2 local locksmiths and one said $75 "no matter what" AND "no guarantees" The second said that it is "not" possible to do! Sure! Lazy people that are not willing to try to help! A-art really makes me feel like i am getting some sort of "family favor" done for me. These guys have been in this area for a very long time and i for one would like to see them here for a long long time to come. If you are in need of this type of service, "Support this place" If you have a crazy hard job to get done give them a chance to do it. The 1%ers make all the difference. Bike's U-lock wasn't opening with key so rode over to them and they happily assisted and were successful in helping me resolve my issue. Needed a few sprays of some lubricant of sorts and a bit of tinkering and walla! - unlocked! Apparently the cold had jammed the lock slightly. The reason this was a 5-star interaction was that they didn't even consider charging me, and were just happy to help and send me on my way wishing me happy holidays. Locked myself out of my apartment at about 8 pm on a Saturday night. While the guy was fairly prompt (only took about 30 min to arrive) and was able to take out the old lock and replace it within about 15 min, it did cost me $700. In all fairness, he did tell me it would be $275ish to get me in, but was not aware that there would be such an insane mark up on the replacement lock. read more
