The summer of 2020 made for some interesting nuances and nuisances with COVID-19 as we put 7000 miles on the odometer enjoying our great nation by car, but like all of our excursions, it was an amazing time. Traveling with three kids under 12 is not without its delights or its challenges; indeed, some of their best fights and most tender moments have come sitting side by side by side in the rear seat of my truck. When those fights come around lunch time, the best way to assuage their angst is to feed them, of course. And so, having left Moab, UT and heading south towards northern Arizona and eventually our Southern California home, we found ourselves in this quaint little southern Utah town with a pack of ravenous kids. A quick scan of the main drag revealed that choices were few here as far as a fast pull-in/pull-out and drive-while-we-eat experience... so Subway became the quick and easy choice. I have one rule for Subways that has saved me a lot of grief: I don't eat at a Subway attached to a gas station. Following this one guideline, we have always had a solid experience, and this place was no different. Since we were towing a pop-up camper trailer, we opted to park in the back and walk in vs. hitting the drive thru. The young lady working the counter was kind and patient with my kiddos who change their mind the faster than Missouri weather... and she wasn't shy about loading up veggies and fixins on the sandwiches. She was also happy to load me up with all the Picante-phile hot stuff (if you want to call it "hot"... but hey, it's Subway): jalapenos, Sriracha, pepperoncinis... you get the deal. All told, we were in and out in ten minutes, and back on the long road home. The restaurant was cleaner and the staff kinder than usual, and that's saying something for a small-town place catering to folks "just passing through" that doesn't really need to be either. Best wishes, small-town Subway, we hardly knew ya. But if the route catches us right again, we'll be back to see you again!

Brisket had the texture of an old boot sole and somehow zero smoke flavor--like they forgot to turn the smoker on. Ribs were tough, overcooked, and tasted mostly of disappointment. Coleslaw was just sad shredded cabbage swimming in watery mayo. Beans were straight from a can with zero seasoning. Even the sweet tea tasted like someone stirred it with regret. $18 for a two-meat plate that made me wish I'd just eaten gas station jerky instead. Place sucked. Atmosphere sucked. Food sucked. Would not return even if they paid me. 0/10, do not recommend unless you hate yourself

My salad was fresh, the cucumbers and tomatoes cut into small pieces, plenty of meat on top, and two containers of delicious thick ranch dressing. I had to ask for the tortilla chips that came with it. My husband had to ask for pickles. Both minor things. Service was fast and friendly. Our server checked back with us a couple of times. There was a lit-up bar area, several tables, and a few tv's to watch. They also have outdoor seating. The restrooms were outside. Everything was clean. If we were local, we'd go there regularly.

The outside of the building is very colorful. High Desert Cafe is a coffee shop, gift shop and diner all in one building. We first checked out the gift shop area before getting our coffee. They have a number of shirts, blankets, jewelry, local stones and art for sale. High Desert Cafe has two separate counters - one for coffee and tea drinks and the other one for food. The food menu has a variety of sandwiches, burgers, salads, breakfast items, smoothies and ice cream. It was early, so we ordered breakfast burritos and coffee on it. The kitchen staff was nice and chatted with us while they cooked our food. There is a small dining area where you can eat your meal when it is ready. High Desert Cafe is a nice hidden gem to stop by if you are passing through Monticello.

The food was very filling and I left happy! The inside gives off a diner vibe, but slightly more upscale/indie? And they sell some independent products (e.g. lip balm, recipe books, etc.). Bathroom was pretty decent too, but there's only one stall so note that you may have to wait if a few folks are also dining there (was pretty quiet the random weekday morning I cam though). Plenty of free street parking available outside too. Overall it's a cute little spot for brunch if you're passing through Monticello.

The hotel front desk employee suggested to check out Canyon Smokehouse. After listening to their suggestions, I also checked out Yelp, and after reading some reviews, I found it really helpful. Parking is limited, so be prepared! The dining area is pretty big with plenty of tables and chairs. You order your meal by the counter, pay and find an empty spot. Cashier will give you a buzzer, so you'll know when the food is ready. You pick up your food at the counter. Soft drinks are available with a free refill. I was pretty hungry after walking in Monument Valley all day, so I have decided to order a Two Meat entree with two sides. I chose smoked brisket and smoked pork with fries and coleslaw. Everything was delicious! Pork was a little fatty and I didn't like it, but everything else was very good. I also ordered dessert, which was a pre packaged Brownie. Size wise it was huge!
