It's a shame my previous review(s) has been deleted. It explained in detail why my vehicles get serviced at A1 Precision Auto Werks. I've trusted our 1998 Ford Ranger, 2005 Toyota Camry, 1985 Mustang GT and 1967 Chevy Nova to Matt O'connell and have recommended his shop to others. Our 2014 Toyota Rav4 will also be taken to A1 if the need arises. You can talk to the owner and he doesn't roll his eyes at you. He listens to what you have to say then gives you his thoughts without being condescending. Matt, is honest and professional. He takes the time and gives the effort and go the extra mile to deliver great service at the lowest price he can. It would have been easiest and more profitable for him if he would have just given the car a quick once over and do what many would have considered the most obvious and replaced the A/C compressor with it's large price tag. He took the time to determine that at a previous service, two O rings were installed that were the wrong thickness. Unfortunately, I do not have any glowing reviews for A1 Precision Auto Werks. The starter on my car went out the other day leaving me stranded in University Park (I live in Chicago). I called other repair shops, but they could not fit me in with all of the other jobs they had going on. A little bit of back story first. I work for a software company that is known in the area, but I'm far from a computer geek. I've been working on cars since I was a kid. I've changed several starters before in the past. I knew what the problem was with my car. A1 had my car towed to their shop and called me shortly after to say, "Hey you have a bad starter." Of course... I told you. "It's going to cost you 551 dollars." I almost choked. "The majority of that price is in the cost of the starter." Complete BS. I was looking up starter prices shortly before even calling them, and found several reputable auto parts stores in the area selling BRAND NEW starters for the make and model of my car for 120 dollars. The other cost was in diagnosis, labor, and tow. So, I argued for a bit, but the guy stuck to his guns about the completely fabricated number he pulled from mid-air. Diagnosis: How hard is it to diagnose a bad starter? Labor: This couldn't have taken over an hour. The starter in my car is easy to get to. You remove the air filter and battery and magically there's the starter. A couple of bolts removed and the starter is out. Add the new starter, return the air filter and battery to their rightful places and BAM! Finished. I know this because I fixed the ground wire on the same starter not more than 2 months ago. Tow: I can't complain about this one that much. The towing was 83 dollars (should have been 50) and my car was towed from not more than a 1.5 miles away. I'm sure the outside towing company charged him 50 and then he tacked on the other 33. All-in-all, my estimate is 120 for the starter, 80 for an hour of labor, and 50 for the tow. That's only 250 dollars. 551 is highway robbery. So to anyone thinking about going to this guy, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. I feel violated by being up-charged 300 dollars. It was unfortunate that I was in a tight spot and had to pay these gypsies. On top of that, he didn't present a detailed invoice that listed what he was charging for each. Ridiculous. read more

As a fan of NPR's "Car Talk" radio program (Saturdays, 9-10am WBEZ) and a recent transplant from Boston, I was certain there would not be a mechanic who could diagnose my old car's health problems. Asking the locals in the area, all pointed to Matt at A-1 as The Guy. I decided to test out his expertise before committing time/money. WOW! I told him of some of the issues I was facing, and he questioned me right back: so you have a Chevy...it must be either an Impala or (?). These are both known issues with older models. And so it went with several lines of inquiry. Turns out Matt has worked on cars all of his life, and at many of the major dealerships. He also races cars on the weekends, so he understands maintenance, prevention, and effective repairs. He also spent about three hours (while his partner worked on my car) explaining about how great cars are engineered for performance but not for mechanics. Thus the BMW I coveted in the stall next to me was beautiful but expensive to repair due to the poor placement of normal parts which wear out. I even through out some ideas about a potential replacement car and he told me what would be labor-intensive to repair and which would be more efficient. He also charges about $80 for a pre-purchase inspection which I know will be well worth the short money when the time comes. In short, if you are anywhere near the south end of the Chicagoland suburbs or the north end of Kankakee SKIP the dealerships and head over to this place. It is hard to find initially but you will be so relieved to find someone trustworthy. read more

As always Matt took care of our beloved truck as if it was his own. Everything is check- detailed list of issues including what can wait and what must be done now along with prices. If you want it done right the first time- go see Matt. If you want it repaired after someone else screws it up- Matt is that man too. Honest- Fair- Competent- and always straight up with every visit. Matt at A1 Precision Auto Werks has been maintaining my vehicles for over ten years. I've never had to return a vehicle after a repair. He is an excellent mechanic, his prices are reasonable, and most importantly, he is honest. There was one occasion where my minivan needed a rather expensive brake repair. Being concerned about the price, I called around to other shops. I was actually pleased when Matt's quote was actually $5 less than the other three shops. Bottom line, it's was an expensive repair. I took my car in, they forgot to flip the switch for my automatic fan during their test drive. Well the car "overheated" so they charged me for them coming out to themselves on the road to bring themselves more coolant because they did not flip the switch. If this event even really happened is in question since it really looked like they just pored fresh coolant all over my engine and said it overheated...ON TOP OF ALL THIS when I picked up my car my "Volbeat" CD was no longer in the radio. My Subaru started making odd noises and having acceleration issues two days ago. I work near A1's shop so I looked online for an auto shop and this was the only one in the area with great reviews on Yelp. Dropped it off today in the morning, and was able to drive it home that night all fixed! Matt was patient, honest, and straight-forward. He was able to diagnosis and repair my issue before the day's end so I didn't have to lose the use of my car. I am not very car-savvy but he was happy to answer all my questions and fully explain any issues that he found. Repair was affordable and reasonable - he also made sure not to charge me for the inspection and the time spent on a problem that he was unable to fix. 5 stars all the way. When I drive by this shop on the way home I see a lot of older cars as well as new ones , so I brought over my 1976 Coupe Deville Cadilac that needed some TLC . The car sits a lot so I let the shop look at it and see what they can do with it , with my amazement the car runs better than I can remember . Ok this is going to be a long review but i can promise you it is well worth the knowledge.Matt at A-1 knows his stuff about cars. I initially trusted everything he told me was wrong with the first car I asked him to fix for me. Here is what was wrong with my car. 1 the hood cable snapped so i could not get under the hood of my car. 2. The battery on my car went completely dead when i tried to start my car BMW makes it to where if the car battery is dead it locks the key in the ignition."however" there is no key hole for you to open the trunk if the battery is dead. 3 I figured well since the battery is in the trunk i can jump the battery from the trunk. But with no key hole and no battery power the trunk would not open. So to replace the battery he wanted to charge me just under $1000.00 that the battery had to be programmed to the car. So all in all I trusted this guy so I could not afford to fix the car so he offers to buy it from me for $1000. I took the offer because I could not afford to fix the car after he told me it would be a total with everything wrong with the car amounting to just over $4200. Of course I took the money he offered and got out of it. After all, The BMW was about to need 8 ignition coils which I replaced at 82,000 miles and the dealer told me they are designed to fail between 85,000 and 100,000 miles. Not a cheap job. $1200. Trust me, if you are going to change 1 change them all. I thought with the trans going out on it ignition coils getting ready to need replacement all of the problems with the car and how much it cost I just sold it.Kelly blu book said the car was worth $3200 KEEP IN MIND THE TRANS WAS NOT IN THE PRICE TO FIX MY CAR. The price quote was to open the hood change the battery and get it started. $4200. So he must have seen me coming after all I am in a wheel chair and I guess I looked like someone another person could take advantage of. AS HE DID. So here is the meat of this 2nd transaction that took place. Because i trusted this guy i had my fiancee drop her car off to A-1. After small talk with my fiancee she asked him to look at the steering on her car. He gives me a call and says well Chuck i hate to tell you this but the car needs brakes all the way around its down to less than 5% on all the brakes"THEY WERE CHANGED 5000 MILES AGO BRAKES AND ROTORS" it needs tires OK IT NEEDS FRONT TIRES a trans cooler the filler neck on the trans needs to be replaced he isn't sure it doesn't need a new rack n pinion steering assembly because the return line on the power steering pump is rusted through. So still believing this guy went over the whole car for me to help me out and really cared he tells me its going to be $2200.00 to get everything back in line to fix it. OK HERE WE GO. I asked you to look at the steering problem. You charged me 50 for a diagnostic fee and then told me the return line with the cooler would be $380.00 to fix. I looked on an Auto store website and the return line with the cooler assembly is $17.99. So i am thinking ok maybe it is really hard to get to maybe its the LABOR CHARGE making it go that high. But really $360.00 in labor for a return line with a cooler that is in the line that seems really high. So because i thought to myself well maybe this guy is just really not a good guy and is just taking advantage of me i called 3 other shops. Matt when you read this take note on what you tell the person you charge a DIAGNOSTIC FEE TOO: WELL WORTH THE $50.00 Because you told me what was wrong with my car i called other shops to see what they would charge me to fix it. That was a no no when you are trying to screw someone over AGAIN. Each of those other shops told me it would be between $100-$150 AT MOST for parts AND LABOR to fix my fiancees car. I let you get over on me but you tried to screw my soon to be wife over DUDE WRONG MOVE. So I arrive at A-1 PRECISION AUTO WERKS get out of the car to speak with Matt and I knocked on the door to be greeted by Matts wife who was an extremely nice women and she tells me Matt is working on a car right now he will be right with you. I told Matt i spoke with 3 other shops and they were less than half of what he was charging me. He put his head down and began to rattle off additional things he did not initially tell me in the price quote to justify the inflated price quote. Matt i just want you to know I really thought you were a nice guy and you really know what you are talking about within your profession. But with the way you smile to someones face that really needs your help and proceed to hurt them for your benefit and greed that will be the last bit of money or any kind of business relationship we ever have again. I would have done all i could to get you as much business as i could because of how nice you initially were to me, but the business side of you is awful. You need to treat people the way your wife greeted me today and the way you did initially. Don't be a wolf in sheep clothing. read more

I have been taking my car here for over one year. I ride the train and Matt will take me to and from the train on the day he works on my car. He tells you what you need and fixes it right. Just had my car in for brakes, new tires and 100,000 mile checkup. My car is running like brand new now. I'm very pleased with their work and 2 year warranty! read more

I was traveling to chicago and was three hours from home when my car started to smoke and wouldn't function. I was able to get off at the next exit and pulled into the gas station. On November 1, 2016 my car broke down at the Prairieview rest stop off of I 57. After a quick Google search on my phone for a local mechanic I found A-1 Precision Auto at 5511 W Wilson St. Monee IL. 708-534-5454 I called them and spoke with Mr. Matt O'Connell and told him that I believe my starter went out on my vehicle. Matt asked me what kind of vehicle I'm in and he will have a tow truck come and get me. I told Matt that I am in a 2007 Ford Crown Vic police car. Matt asked me what color my vehicle was and I informed him that it is a fully marked vehicle for the Polish American Police Association of Illinois. Approximately 10 minutes later a tow truck from Wes Kochel Towing & Recovery 25800 S Sunset Dr. Monee IL. 708-534-8477 came and towed me to A-1 Precision. A-1 had my new starter installed in 26 minutes and I should be happy but I'm not. I believe this shady business price gouges their customers. They charge me $586.48 to install a starter in a Ford Crown Victoria. The part itself they charged me was $240.75 for a starter. Yesterday I called some local parts stores for a price on the starter and for a remanufactured starter goes anywhere between $99-$117 and for a brand-new one goes for $143 on average. And I was curious also about the tow truck bill because they charge me $125 for a five minute car ride so I contacted the tow company directly and they told me they charged A-1 a flat $85 to tow my car. This business is a fraud and should be shut down. Monee Illinois should be ashamed to have this place as a business in their community. And the tow truck company should stop doing business with A-1 because they are going to give themselves a bad name by doing business with this fraudulent company. read more

This place is a total ripoff. Quoted me over 1500 for some minor work to be done. I chose not to get it done and was charged for "diagnostics" of course with no detailed paperwork. I went to Dralle and they did the same work for 450 dollars. That's how he makes his money, pricey estimates, people don't get the work done and he charges a diagnostics charge without having to do a lick of work. For convenience sake, I mistakenly went back and pretty much same thing happened. Plus he talks down to people like they're idiots and as if he's a know-it-all. gave this place multiple chances with my car. every time he misdiagnosed my car and charged me hundreds both times. both times i got fed up and just paid him $400 or $500 for doing nothing but changing the oil and spark plugs. ended up taking it to another place and got it fixed the first time for only 120 dollars. read more
