The worst steering column job ever. Solvent on the driver's side door, took clear coat down to the primer. Never mentioned anything about it. My horn doesn't work and tool pecker marks on one spot terrible service. Actually i have washed it several time that solvent is still removing the clear coat and paint. No bueno. read more

I needed a Smog check and I was able to book an appointment via their website for 3 days in advance. This was the only auto shop that had online booking in yreka (that I was able to find personally). I got an email confirmation as well as a price estimate immediately. I came in and they took my car exactly at the time of appointment. All the staff were courteous and efficient. Smog check was done in about 20 minutes, they printed out a certificate for me as well as submitted one to the DMV electronically, and the price exactly matched the estimate online. read more

I took my car in to be diagnosed for an electrical issue and am disgusted with my experience. They fixed my car but when I picked it up, the amount of grease on my car was unacceptable. Additionally, the airbag light, which wasn't on prior to dropping it off, was lit on my dash. I called and explained that to the front desk lady. She said I would need to take it back in to clear the code. They wanted to charge me their full service fee to check and clear a light they caused but the car wasn't there long enough and instead charged me $67.00 on top of the $1,327 I had already paid. I have since cleaned my car, and the grease has stained portions of the netting. I wanted to support a local business and now understand why I never do. I would highly discourage anyone from using this business. read more

This was awhile ago...but the 'lady' out front was severely lacking in customer service skills. They kept throwing stuff that diidn''t work at our vehicle, kept driving it many miles to 'reset' something, using up gallons of gas. Never fixed the issue, but we were not interested in their work again after a lot of wasted time, money, and frustration. read more

My motorhome quit running late one evening. AAA towed me to A-1. I could tell the shop was very busy. The following day, they were able to check out my motorhome. The engine problem was an intermittent issue. They fixed the issue and I was able to drove on. Considering the fact that I had an emergency, I thought they did a great job on the scheduling my motorhome. read more

It's actually at 201 Oberlin Road in Yreka. I made an appointment with Todd the week before. I showed up early and he got me right in. The car passed & price was right, $53. He gave me directions to DMV and AAA to go get my license plate tags. Then he told me that the noise in front of engine was either water pump, A/C compressor, or alternator. He used a stethoscope and said it was the alternator. Their mechanic was leaving so he gave me suggestion to go to Toyota dealer in Medford. I got a really high price $730 from Toyota so Todd looked up his price ($300 less than Toyota) and he suggested I look for a private mechanic in Ashland that will use a remanufactured alternator. That's what I did and it worked out well. When I arrived Todd was explaining to a woman that her car did not pass smog test. He told her it would be about $400 to fix, but he said he did some adjustments, suggested she drive it for a few days to see if that helped, and for her to come back and hopefully her car will pass and not have the $400 expense. Unlike others, I found todd to be a trustworthy service advisor. I'm from out of town. read more

Great place to have work done on your vehicle. Todd's quite a friendly guy at the counter & the entire team is top notch. I stopped in for a smog check on my vehicle & was out the door & on my way in under 30 min. A couple things to remember... Make an appointment ahead of time. Plan to arrive a few minutes early. If you can't make an appointment ahead, they'll do their best to squeeze you in but keep in mind they're quite busy. The cost for my smog check was reasonable at $53. This happened in August 2012. I believe they correctly diagnosed that my radiator was clogged. It suddenly overheated, AAA towed me there because the local guy that the towtruck driver first recommended was not open. I had to leave the car and continue on my trip, and picked it up just before close of business on a Friday night. As I drove away the temp gauge read just below the too-hot zone, not right in the middle of the range that was normal. I turned around and showed this to the mechanic. Here is the problem with this vendor: in retrospect, I was correct in my assessment that the thermostat was defective. In retrospect, this was obvious. The mechanic just would not entertain that possibility. He assured me that as long as the temp didn't go into the "RED" range the engine would be fine. My regular mechanic of course knew better, but since A1 is a NAPA network shop, he couldn't do a warranty replacement. A1 sent me off into the mountains and on to Oregon, on a weekend, with a faulty thermostat. (The NAPA shop in my town is another story). I returned a month later after having MY mechanic, not the NAPA shop, replace the thermostat. A1 did refund the cost of that replacement. They did competently diagnose the problem, and determined that there was no damage to the engine. They charged me $700 to replace the radiator in a '96 Mazda Protege. The lot is full of vehicles. They can do the work, but so can a lot of other vendors. read more

While I was driving through Yreka my fuel pump blew up at 8 pm at night. So I had my car towed here and within 48 hours my car was fixed and the parts were installed. Which he told me would take 3-4 days. He quoted me a lot less than I had expected and also gave me a AAA discount. Similar to the guy above, Had my motorhome towed to A-1 to put a new engine in the vehicle. WE paid over 3,000 to have an engine delivered and put in, flew out on a one way ticket to Yreka from Texas to pick up the vehicle because they said it would be road ready for us to drive. We arrived and the vehicle hadn't been touched, was completely trashed inside and out. We camped out and waited around for the vehicle to be ready, never received a call to say that it was ready. After over a week of camping we had to rent a vehicle to drive back to Texas because we still had jobs that we had to get back to. They then put a lien on the vehicle and told us we were no longer owners of the motorhome and that it had been demolished. Why would they have demolished a vehicle with a brand new engine installed?? all this... PLUS the fact that we tried suing them and they declared BANKRUPTCY to avoid the lawsuit. DANGER! Do NOT do business with these people. read more

Worse place to go to get your car fixed. They lie about problems with your car. If you have them do a diagnostic on your car they will always come back and say the transmission head has a leak and will cost thousands to fix. then you take it to another place run the same diagnostic and find out that your heads are fine and that is not the problem. A-1 did this to two of my vehicles. they also can take weeks to fix a simple problem and will always over charge and try to convince you that more work needs to be done to your vehicle. Takes advantage of the traveler. They charged me almost the triple of the actual price. 3. I went there with one issue and I got out with two issues that need to be fixed. Predatory. A radiator hose broke and my engine briefly overheated. Added water and limped in to A1 for a new hose. They decide it had blown head gasket, needs to have the head machined, valve job and likely new piston rings. Only $6000 and over a week. I need to be in Reno the next day to start classes. They won't even replace the hose to let me limp into Reno. Next day went to another shop, new hose, fluids, got to Reno just fine, no problems over the last 6 months. Cost $90 to have a guy look at it for 30 minutes. What a rip off. Stay away. read more

Good honest folks who do generally good work. I was from out of town and they performed their work. There was a minor glitch, but they stepped up to the plate and made it right. While they could easily have ignored me, since I live 250 miles away, they honored their obligation and paid for a tiny repair I had done in the Bay Area. RUN AWAY AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. They are Terrible. Told me I was "full of shit" when I told him 1500 dollars was on the high end of estimates I got from elsewhere to replace the head gasket on my 91 camry. When I checked elsewhere I got estimates of 900 to 1200 and then then called me a "f***ing liar". Stay away at all costs. They are very scandalous, money hungry, and also do terrible work. They have told me on multiple occasions that more is broken with my vehicle than is really broken. Trust me steer clear of them unless you want to be treated like a piece of crap for trying to find the best price. Oh and by the way the man that said all those things to me in the quotes, yeah that's the owner of the place. read more

Several years ago I had my Cadillac in A-1's shop to see what was wrong with it. They told me the engine had problems and they could not fix it and that I would have to buy another engine at a cost of $6,000, then they could put that newer engine in. I could not afford this, as the owner well knew. He offered to buy my Cadillac. I then had it towed to Redding, CA to a Cadillac dealership. They ran tests and told me it was not the engine but another problem and they fixed it for $270.00. The owner of A-1 auto at the time, liked my Cadillac and I truly believe that he thought I would sell it to him for a cheap cost. read more

Our car broke down and AAA towed us to their garage. They told me that my car would be read in 3-4 days. They encouraged me to rent a car from the Hertz dealer which was in the same office space (suspect!). Left with no option we signed their estimated work order and rented a car. Over the course of the next EIGHT DAYS we never got a call when they thought it would take longer than originally planned. They didn't even call us when our car was done being worked on! When I went to pay for it they over charged me by $148 which I didn't realize until I looked at the papers after I had already drove off. I went back and they KNEW they over charged me cause the receptionist (Jennifer) said with a smile, "Yeah that price didn't sound right. Oh yeah, our computer says you only approved $*****. I'll get you refunded." And she kept making excuses for why I couldn't see a supervisor. SOO many problems with this place and I don't trust anyone there. Avoid at all cost! read more

AAA towed my car to A-1 when I broke down on I-5. They told me the transmission needed to be replaced and gave me a quote of $4300. I decided to have the car towed home and get estimates from other shops. The two other shops I contacted gave me estimates of $2800 and $3100 for the same work. Also, when I picked up the car the battery was dead because a mechanic had left a light on in the car. NOT IMPRESSED WITH THE PLACE. WOULD NOT GO BACK. read more

I should have read the Yelp reviews regarding this unbelievably horrible place before I took my motorhome to them. If there was an option to give them MINUS 5 stars it would be an appropriate review. Be forewarned, these people are the worst-case scenario/nightmare you hear about. Why they haven't been closed down is a mystery to me. These are the kind of people who spray paint your valve-covers and charge you for a valve job. I have since filed a complaint with the BBB regarding their incompetence. Short version: I took my vehicle to them to have the A/C repaired. They told me they could do the job and convinced me of their ability to do so. Nearly two weeks later they called and said my vehicle was ready, however when I went to pick it up they told me they couldn't figure out how to get the A/C to work and couldn't find the wiring diagram. Yet they still wanted to charge me over $1200 for the parts and labor to fix it. We reached an agreement that I would pay them for parts and then bring it back when they were able to figure out the wiring diagram. It was then that I realized how incompetent they were because I was able to find the wiring diagram on-line in less than 10 minutes. Hence I didn't want to bring my motorhome back to them. I reluctantly paid them for the labor even after their barely literate rebuttal to my Better Business Bureau complaint stated that I was "A thief, a liar and a cheat", which is clearly untrue. Since they wrote those words in their rebuttal to the BBB, it is legally considered "defamation of character" and in a court of law will be defined as "libel" if I want to take it that far (I'm still considering that option). So there it is. These people have no concern for you. They do not care if you ever come back again because they have scammed you and now they're done with you. I have to stop myself here because I could go on about how horrible they spoke to me in their office the day I picked up my vehicle. I came away with the knowledge they have no people skills, nor do they have any compunction about their disgust for their customers. Bottom line: Avoid this place like the plague. read more

I had a more positive experience with this shop than some other reviewers evidently did, despite the fact I was pretty much a buyer in a seller's market. MY PERSPECTIVE: I am 72, have had some experience as a shade-tree mechanic on my own cars for more than 50 of those years including a complete rebuild of my own engine (back when it was a simpler chore with no computerized crap), and was an auto claims adjuster for some years dealing daily with both insured owners and repair shops. I also hate spending money. THE PATIENT: 2005 Ford Freestar minivan, owned from new, about 82,000 miles at the time (late September 2012) and no previous drive train problems including several multistate trips. THE SETUP: In late September, I was driving my Freestar van back home to LA from the Seattle area. For reasons never determined, I suddenly overheated while coming south over Siskiyou Summit; I had plenty of fluids, and the a/c off, for instance. The gauge never hit the red zone, and after parking and idling long enough to cool down into the normal zone, I was able to limp cautiously to the next town downhill, Yreka. (Pronounced "Wye-REE-ka.") However, I could hear the damage had been done: a dry, quiet but sharp ticking sound that matched engine speed, which I call the "rattlesnake rattle": I've heard it before and it's bad news on Page 1. The Ford dealer in Yreka was booked solid and shorthanded but they advised me that they refer a lot of their overflow work to A-1 Auto a few blocks up the street. THE REPAIR: A-1 confirmed my V-6 was a terminal case, pretty much what my own ears had told me. Out of the available options, given the age of my car I chose a used engine from a reliable supplier in another town. They could start repair the following week and figured it "should be" finished by the end of that week. I noted the cautious wording and took it for an approximation and not a promise. For one thing, no shop in their right mind will start a repair until they have all necessary parts on hand, and parts supply is largely not under their control. THE CAR RENTAL: For the contributor who claims suspicion about being referred to the Hertz office right there in the same building: Did you check what alternatives you had?!? That's the only game in town, champ - literally. I checked airline, Amtrak and bus service (Greyhound, local and regional), as well as other rental car outfits, without finding anything else closer than Redding (check your map). Thank God that Hertz office was anywhere in town, not to mention right there on the spot! I now am also a satisfied Hertz customer even though I usually rent elsewhere when needed. THE RETURN: I took a chance and drove back up from LA to Yreka hoping that everything would happen on schedule, but as any repairman from Bangor to Bangkok can tell you, things seldom go well for long, especially on a major job like this. They did inform me by phone early Friday that they weren't able to quite finish as they had hoped by that afternoon, but by that time I was already well enroute, so I spent an extra weekend in the motel. I mention all this because that is on ME, not the shop. I could easily have waited until repair was actually done before starting north again, but noooo, I had to be antsy to get my car back. By the way, for the numerous complaints on this and other websites that the (mechanic, plumber, contractor, whatever) "never told me" regarding job status, my first question is, "DID YOU ASK!?" Communication is a two way street and so is courteous treatment. In this case, although the shop was officially closed all weekend, I was told the mechanic was actually working extra time on the weekend and trying to use whatever components seemed in better shape between the old versus replacement engines. I did walk past on Sunday and beyond the closed gates, I could see the shop doors were in fact open, and heard work going on. THE BOTTOM LINE: The car was finished Monday morning per the revised schedule, a couple of workday hours beyond the original estimate. The weekend just happened to add time in the middle. The final bill of $4176 was actually more than a hundred bucks LESS than the original estimate, despite the added work hours on the weekend. THE FOLLOW UP: I held off on this review long enough to be sure there were no delayed problems. Well, since then I have put an additional 7000-plus miles on the car and so far, nothing has leaked, smoked, made funny noises or (as far as I know) fallen off, and she runs as well as she did before all this. A few days ago, she just passed the California smog inspection for license renewal. I have no problem rating 5 stars for the job A-1 did for me. read more

12/28/2012 Was coming back from Christmas with family in Sacramento,and noticed that my amp gauge was very low charging. Stopped at Les Schawb to have them check out the battery and the test showed that my alternator was not charging. Now this is at 4:00 pm on a Friday and nobody was around. I was in the Bay Area for business and driving home to Oregon on a Saturday. My check engine light came on. When I pulled over to check it, my car was blowing steam all over. I drove to the Yreka Ford dealership but the service department was closed. They sent me over to A1. The mechanics checked my vehicle and diagnosed the problem right away. I needed a part that they could not get until Monday. Fortunately, the Ford dealership had the part and was willing to sell it to me. A1 installed the part right away and I was back on the road within 1 hour of finding the part. These guys saved me from 2 more nights away from my family and I am very grateful. A-1 auto takes advantage of peoples lack of automotive knowledge, so if your not a mechanic don't go here, ever. long story short these guys failed my gf's truck for not having a o2 sensor plugged in that couldn't be plugged in! the exhaust is from a ca truck and this ones from oregon so it never came with a second o2 sensor but they failed it for visual anyway, so basically applied the wrong vehicle requirements to fail it. my gf confronted him about it after talking to me and the tech even said "ya i saw there was no plug for it" but failed it anyway and then ran the actual test which it passed, even though he already failed it visually,why would you do that? what a waist of time. avoid this place at all costs!! read more

I had a similarly bad experience as the rest of the reviewers. AAA towed me to Yreka and gave me the business card for A-1 and said it was a triple-A approved auto repair shop. My car was towed in on Monday which was a holiday so it was there and ready to go first thing Tuesday morning. I called at 8:13 a.m and told them what was wrong with my car (the clutch) and there was a key and a note in the drop box. I checked out of the motel and walked to A-1 and waited in the waiting room all day until 5:00pm, at first assuming my car was being worked on. I checked a few times and they hadn't even started yet. Long story short, they had a stereo install ahead of me and it took the mechanic from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm with lunch sometime in there to install the car stereo. They knew I was stranded in Yreka and didn't start working on my car until 3:00 p.m. The mechanic took the flywheel to the shop that was going to resurface it at 4:30. Then they blamed it on the resurfacing shop not having the flywheel back in time to finish my car. One more night in the motel. I picked up my car the next day and started to drive out of town when it occurred to me to check and see if my wheel lock key was back where it belongs. When I gave it to the mechanic he said he would put it right back where it was. Not surprisingly it wasn't there. I drove back to the shop and a guy looked for it. It was in the mechanic's pocket. The guy who was helping me acted like it was no big deal at all. I didn't smile it off but I didn't get irate either. Since I wasn't so smiely about the missing wheel lock key he became really sarcastic saying he was sorry I was "such an unhappy person". He kept this up until I finally swore at him as I drove away. I will be calling AAA tomorrow to see what their criteria/standards are for approving auto repair shops. read more

Ok not sure why all the bad reviews, experience was outstanding. My trailer burnt out an axel bearing on the rear axel. I have a tandem travel trailer and this is the second one that did this. This always happens while you are hundreds of miles from home. Yes I pack and maintain the bearings. Lets' just say that the axels were undersized for the trailer and Dexter stopped making this axel. Anyway this was the Tuesday between Christmas and New Years so only 3 days left in the week. We had just arrived in Yreka to do some steelhead fishing and notice we had smoke coming out of the axel. I saw A-1 just down the street and we limped on over. They were obviously busy several Cal-Fire trucks in the shop and two other people in front of me in the service department with auto repairs. I waited my turn. They were upfront with me. it was the end of the year and they had a lot of other vehicles in front of me, but they would do their best to at least get the hub off and see what the damage was. So we rented a room and went about our vacation. On the 30th they called and said that they were able to get the wheel and bearings off and there was chance they would be able to do the repair without replacing the axel. On the 31st they called me again and said I needed to come into the shop and take a look at the axel. So I did, they had found that a flat and a deep gouge had been made when the bearings failed. So it was up to me they could put on new bearings and get me on the road but could not guarantee the repair would last or I could leave the trailer there and they would order a new axel. I had over 500 miles to travel so a new axel it was. We went back home. By the 14th they called and the trailer was good to go. They were very accommodating storing my trailer in their locked yard. When I got there all was as it should be, they noted one of my tires had worn pretty badly on the outside edge, probably due to the drag on the axel, so I asked them to pull the spare off the spare rim and put it on the trailer rim and put the worn tire on the spare rim and they did this in less than a half hour and charged me $18.00. They also had pulled the other tires off the front axel and inspected and serviced the bearings at no charge just as part of the repair. As I mentioned this had happened before at another location . The cost was about the same as the last time this happened but the service was much faster and lot more thorough. I drove the 500+ miles home only stopping for gas and to check to see if the bearings were heating up. I made it home without a problem. So if you are ever in Yreka with a trailer or RV problem do not hesitate to go to A-1 Auto, RV and Trailer repair. read more
