Called Larry on the phone and was given a warm welcome to stop by and train. Stopped by for their 5:30pm adult BJJ class which was proceeded by their kids class. You know it's going to be amazing when you have a swarm of happy and excited kids. When Larry showed up, the kids gave swarmed him and gave him hugs and high fives. Clear and concise instructions by coach Larry, he was patient, funny and unpretentious. Down to earth and amazing happy vibes all around. Every academy should strive to be like this place. The members are warm, welcoming and patient with my newbie white belt self. No one was grinding for a submission, and just rolling to be better. I felt safe and learned a lot! Out of town travelers, Be aware the Florida humidity is rough. 90min will feel longer , this is why their members are all beast modes. Remember to hydrate! Highly recommended, and the hype is real! I tried a few gyms in town over the years, and they were a lot of the same big egos , and hostile rolls turning me away from the sport. That is certainly not the case here. Coach Larry, Bill, Martin , Yvonne and the rest of the FOYA fam have been nothing but welcoming and have made me feel right at home after such a short time. If you're a lifelong practitioner , or new to the world FOYA is the place for you.

I found Jax Muay Thai through IG and decided to follow them and even scheduled three personal training sessions and classes to attend while in town. First impression: Jayme ( the first person I met at front desk ) was super nice and welcoming . She was willing to help me with paper work and even Introduced me to few trainers and even offered to train with me and asked if I wanted to attend her classes which I did!! Thank you The facility was big, clean and organized . They have everything you need from weights,kicking bags, stretching area, ring and a big space to train with groups . Personal trainer: I was assigned to Coach John. Amazing trainer !!!! Very informative, knowledgeable, patient and will really show you techniques. I've had few training sessions with other trainers in LA and most of them just tell me what to do, unlike Coach John, he was very detailed and really watches your every move from footwork to striking. Every single coach is so knowledgeable and friendly. I was a bit intimidated at first since I didn't have an ounce of martial arts experience before I came in, but the entire staff are so welcoming. It's truly a family there and they will know you by your first name on your second visit. Even the other members of the gym who have been there for years are so kind and willing to help you out on basics. If you are even considering taking a class, do it, you will fall in love! They also hold fight nights every once and a while which are a must go! This gym has such great energy I can't recommend it enough.

My Jiu-Jitsu journey started about 4 years ago. I was healed up after having abdominal surgery and was given the clearance to workout again. Being new to Jacksonville at that time, I knew best to find something close to home. It started with a kickboxing cardio fitness class. And then the invitation onto the mats! "Why not give this a try?! If not for more fitness, it's great for self defense too!" And so it began... I share this because at Knuckle Up on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6pm we are getting back to the self defense basics of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. If you've ever been curious, bored with your current workout, been a victim, or maybe just want to be prepared for the what-ifs, this is a great place and time to start! All are invited!
