Fire the DJ. Or at least get him to stop playing the Lion King remix and bye bye bye on loop.

Good atmosphere, but would've liked more 90s music. Great prices for drinks. Close to all the other bars. Nice spot.

Yelled at and cursed at by staff early on in the evening for a "dress code violation."

The Road House is a quite excellent roomy dive bar located in downtown Athens…read more It has a split personality. During the day, it's mostly grown up townies and the occasional grown up tourist like me. At night, especially late night, it's PACKED with UGA kids, which it was when I ventured there on my first night in town on a Monday night after navigating the Atlanta airport and the long drive to Athens in a rental from there. The bartender on duty when I went during the day was great. She was friendly and knows her craft. Bartending is a lot more than pouring drinks. I will go so far as to say the pouring and making of drinks is almost incidental to the craft, which means maintaining a safe, fun, and welcoming atmosphere that makes people want to come back all while pouring and making drinks, running tabs, ringing up orders, handling old schoolers like me who pay and tip in cash as they go, washing glasses, and so forth. The prices are more than reasonable. For instance, during happy hour (2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.) my usual order of a Makers rocks and a good beer was $10.50. Off happy hour it would be $12.50, which is still more than reasonable in my experience. I will certainly stop in again when I return to Athens next year. Cheers!

Locals know it well -it's been serving the neighborhoods around Normaltown for decades-and it looks the part., Food: 5 stars for their Cincinnati-style chili on French fries , by the bowl, or with hotdogs. Sandwiches are always good size and tasty. We like their Reuben and Rachel as well as the various BLT's. Food is a strong point. Service : Staff are very pleasant and the service is quick. Facility: 2- star (Sorry-but it's true) Old interior, but they have attempted to keep it serviceable. The bathrooms are a good reason to use hand sanitizer instead of washing your hands, IMHO. Lots of various beer cans for decor. Location: Very conveniently located on main thoroughfare just outside Athens in Normaltown between the hardware store and the Mexican restaurant. A few parking spaces on the street, more in the rear.

The fries are hand cut and perfectly seasoned. Last time I was here, I had their chili and I will admit, it's better than mine! That's saying a lot! Great beer selection of local brews. The staff behind the bar is very friendly and attentive. The only downside is that parking is not great with street parking is the only option. It was worth circling the block a few times before I got a spot! Can't wait to try another one of their awesome comfort food specialties!

Not even sure where to begin to describe the awesomeness that is the Manhattan. Well first off,…read moreit's dimly lit with some retro lamps, light fixtures and scattered Xmas lights. There seems to not be any open space and the walls and ceiling are both pretty much covered with trinkets. There's little 8" vinyl records hanging from the ceiling, along with beads and various other indescribable pieces of art thrown in here and there. Mismatched tables, chairs, booths and couches are tucked throughout the inside of the bar. There's also a straight up bar seating area, which I totally love and is the best place to chat with random local folks. Part of the charm of the Manhattan is that you can totally go in by yourself, sit at the bar and end of meeting lots of interesting people. I was so glad to see that this had not changed a bit since I had been away for 6 years. Second only to my love of dives bars, is popcorn. And this popcorn machine really comes through after a long night drinking in a little dive like this. Even though there are windows, this bar is always dark (just how I like em) and you just lose track of all time. I was just there during winter break & was pretty jazzed to see a ton of hot rum and whisky cocktails. Perfect since it was super cold out. The Manhattan was always one of my fav & deliciously divey downtown drinking spots and so glad to see it still is.

If anything, it looks a little sketchy from the outside given the bars on the window, but it's not a sketchy place at all. Believe me when I say this. I stopped in on a Monday night for a nightcap. It was nice and quiet, which is exactly what I was looking for that particular evening, the following day being a travel day for me. As you can see from my pics, it's a nice little place. Drink prices were very reasonable, and the bartending was very good, too. I will happily stop in again when I return to Athens next year. Cheers!
