I've been to other classes through Class Pass and TKO is by far the most welcoming. They take newbies through a good startup class to go over all the punches and kicks. They focus 100% on form to prevent injuries making this class pretty safe for newbies. Overall, I've been getting a great workout from them and will continue to come back! Master Michael Catron showed our children how to be 'situationally aware', and used the great analogy of owning the salad bar - don't let anyone in your way, don't let anyone split the group, and no one gets to the tomato crock before you! Also, I took the Women's Self-Defense class with Master Hilary Catron. I travel a lot, and being a woman there is always a safety concern. Even just walking alone down a street or in a different city can be scary. Master H. Catron was very helpful and had us practice defense moves repeatedly to help us get used to the motions and the force required. I'm more confident and better prepared to handle an unwanted situation. Child's Birthday Party: My youngest son had his Birthday celebration at Catron's Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do. The group had a wonderful time. They did self-defense, broke boards, played samurais with foam swords, did jiujitsu with balloons, and practiced some Tae Kwon Do movements. Master M. Catron was so great with the kids and really knew how to interact with them. I was really impressed how he had all of their names memorized. This helped the kids to connect and enjoy the activities. I have been trying to call to cancel my subscription for two weeks. It got to the point where I tried calling every 10 minutes. Never an answer. I left a message like the voicemail asked and never got a call back. This is the most "money first, students last" martial company I have ever seen. He makes it fun while still making sure you keep moving forward. He teaches Hapkido, a Korean martial art, and has achieved the rank of 5th Dan. To put that in perspective, it often takes longer to move from 4th Dan to 5th Dan than it does for a beginning student to attain a black belt. True commitment and experience! I've personally witnessed him build a new student's confidence inside of a month. Several times actually. A student comes in shy, scared, hardly speaking, and within a month the student is smiling, responding, engaging, and most importantly confidently trying. It's awesome. One of the great things is that while Hapkido can certainly be powerful, it doesn't rely on strength. Rather it teaches how to use angles and circular movements to your advantage. This might be a silly example but think of how a large adult can still trip over a small child or a pet - it's not that the child or pet overpowered the adult, it's that they interfered with the adult's movement in just the right way. It took no particular effort for them to trip the adult and yet it still worked. It's a great place to learn a martial art and how to protect yourself and those you love.
