We took a short trip to NYC and extended it a few days so we could do just that - play tourist. A Pedicab ride around the park was on my wife's bucket list. I relented, even though I wouldn't say I liked the cold. We found a friendly, enthusiastic driver who explained our options. We selected the one that was right for us, paid, and the ride began. Was the driver knowledgeable? He certainly was when it came to pop culture. He knew enough about John Lennon and Yoko Ono to point out their residence in the Manhattan. He showed us where various films were made, where stars performed, this or that actor's favorite part of the park, etc. When it came to history, which we know a great deal about, his facts weren't always correct, which was a bit troublesome. When we realized we knew more about the park's history than our guide, we were happy with the pop culture and left it at that. I'm sure the caliber of the driver varies from one to the next. I will say he was pleasant and kind. When we entered the cab, he gave us a warm, heated blanket. (Although the cold cut right through it.) Seriously, I would never have chosen to do this on my own. But we did have a good time and got to see things we hadn't seen before. Expensive, but it was worth every penny.

I walked by Steve and he engaged me like the others, but instead of pressuring me for the sale, he offered me a free app that would guide me around Central Park. He continued offering free advice and where to best see the park, then asked if I would like to see it on his tour. This was a way better approach!! His tour was amazing and he is full of historical facts and knows every in and out around Central Park. We got a text from Oscar 30 min before our 10am meeting time telling us where to meet him, conveniently across the street from our hotel. He was easy to find despite all the other carriage drivers. It was the most gorgeous day in NYC so this couldn't been timed more perfectly. The carriage was plenty spacious for our party of 3 (would have been fine for 4 or 5 if had kids). We stopped for a few pictures and Oscar pointed out some highlights including where movies were filmed. He also showed us a fountain where other carriage drivers were telling their riders that it was the fountain from friends but he said he couldn't lie to us. ;). And we even got to feed Oscar's lovely horse strawberry some carrots. 45 min later our 50 min carriage ride came to an end. As soon as we paid Oscar he left us quickly in search of his next ride. Again no need to book this experience ahead of time, but if you want to plan ahead you'll be in good hands with Oscar and his horse, strawberry.

Carriage Rides in Central Park Update…read more I've been hanging around the carriages in Central Park for years. It reminds me of my Old Kentucky Home. It's the smell! I'm also trying to learn about the requirements. I enjoy learning about various professions and their business operations. I've spoken to many carriage drivers. Since I wrote my last review there have been a lot of changes. In my experience they are for the better. I'm glad the carriage rides are still available. They are a NYC tradition. My advice is to research the driver and his business. Most are very transparent about their prices and Xtra costs. If you're like me you have a vision of the type of experience you want. In my case it's usually my visitors from out of town calling the shots. We ride as a joint financial venture! Carriage Rides in Central Park is a historic business. Over a century ago, carriages were the only transportation in New York City. These days Horses in colorful feathered tack line up inside the Park. Just remember rides are available on a first come, first serve basis. Prices are negotiated with the individual carriage drivers.
