Wilson Tuscarora State Park - Just a few of the bird types that may be seen in this area in Winter

I've been going to this park since I was a little girl in the 70s, so I might just be a little…read moreimpartial, as well as a tad critical... Back in the day when erosion and the State didn't own the park you could drive your cars down along a road on the beach. Not much room for that type of thing any longer and with liabilities etc I understand why. The entry fee is a bit much for the park and it's amenities, but there's a few nice pavilions and the restrooms are clean and in good working order. If you go real early or after 5:30 you don't have to pay the entry fee. So if you're like me and just want to stop by for a beautiful sunset on Lake Ontario you can get that for free! Plenty of time to stroll long the beach and pick some cool rocks and driftwood up before the main event! If you haven't seen a sunset from this viewpoint... I highly recommend! Park is well maintained and has disc golf too. You can park in the lot before the entrance and not have to pay to play I believe. Overall I love this place for the nostalgia. It will always remain one of my top 10 places in the world.

I bet it's awesome in the summer but I was here in the winter. A very wet slippery set of trails here as we head into winter season. Probably better in the summer or in the dead of winter when it's frozen this time of year it was a slippery mess. This was my second hike on the outside chronicles winter challenge in 20 21-20 22.

We took a morning hike here today, and it's great!…read more There's pavilions you can rent, a pond to fish in and paths to hike. The main path lies beyond a big sign to the upper right of the pond. It's not a difficult walk, but it's not flat. There's a long rickety bridge over the creek, secure enough to feel safe but bouncy enough for a small thrill. To the left of the waterfall is a small clearing and ledge for a great shot of the waterfall or you can walk down a few steps to the right and find a place to sit and rest or eat a small picnic lunch. Midway between the bridge and waterfall is the ruins of an old historic homestead. We were only there for about an hour including a ten minute break at the waterfall so it's not a long hike, but there's smaller paths here or there that veer off of the main path. Leashed pets are allowed. There were geese around the pond, but I didn't have a hard time avoiding their waste. I was sad to see a couple of beer cans on our hike, but aside from passing a handful of other people, I felt fully immersed in beauty and nature. 6/12/15 Update: Visited again on a whim today after a week of heavy rain. There's that mud everybody was talking about. Still enjoyed myself and saw lots of wildlife: garter snakes, frogs, chipmunks, squirrels and a bright yellow bird. Love this place!

You walk into an apple orchard if you take a certain trail. They have a boy scout display that is partly still around, but seems like some of it has since been destroyed. They seem to have a nice frisbee golf course as well!

What a beautiful, natural, "un-touristy" stretch of rocky shoreline, adjacent to grassy meadow…read morefields, just two blocks from the main drag (Queen Street) in Niagara-on-the-Lake. This area is akin to a craggy shoreline with a walking trail by the water's edge. You can clearly see an old, rocky fort/garrison just across the bay. My TO friends told me that area is actually in Nw York state, and the building is Fort Niagara. When I say it's close, I'm saying a good swimmer could swim there from here! There is a large, prominent hexagonal gazebo centrally located on the grassy stretch by the water's edge. It is quite Victorian in style, with white wooden cut-outs and embellishments. I thought it would make for a gorgeous location, with he craggy shoreline and Lake Ontario behind it, for wedding or engagement photos, or any momentous occasion, really. Just a beautiful site. (A gallery owner later informed us that this gazebo was built for the Stephen King movie, "The Dead Zone", and they gifted it to the town when the movie was done, as so many locals loved it. It really does seem to fit perfectly on the site). There is a large parking lot by the park, but I believe it is paid parking, FYI. It takes but ten minutes to walk the shoreline trail and back, but it's a wonderful stroll on a lovely day, and the area is so picturesque, it's like out of a postcard. Definitely worth the time, if you are in the area
