I've been in SSP for years and have passed by this establishment several times and did not try it…read moreout until recently! Beach Culture is unabashedly that - a little eatery that celebrates all things beachy! Having said this, I appreciate Beach Culture for what it is - a little stop for a small bite on the way to the beach. Believe it or not, there is usually a line outside this place on the weekends, and I can see why with a younger crowd especially. Young, beach-going vacationers will feel the pull of the waves as they stop in for a smoothie or an acai bowl. (If I was a kid, that's what I would do anyway!) I came here a few times last week - once to check it out and grab some food for myself, and once to bring my nieces because I felt like they would dig this place. I purchased a few of their toasts both times - for $4.50 each, the price is admittedly a liiiiiittle on the steep side for some bread with toppings, but Beach Culture needs to survive somehow, right? I do have to say, both toasts were very well balanced with fruit and toppings (one was banana / peanut butter / cacao and the other was strawberry / nutella / cacao ) - really nice for a light breakfast. I also grabbed a shaka coffee which was extremely tasty - and I can't wait to try their other specialty mixes. My nieces opted for a acai bowl and went absolutely bonkers for it, saying it was better then Playa Bowls (which is their all time favorite). There are a few things that prevent me from giving Beach Culture five stars, even if those things can't be helped. Seating is definitely limited - there are only two small tables outside - and the workers here can be a little on the slow side (although, they are all so lovely and friendly). But it's BEACH CULTURE, so if you're in a rush when going to this place, are you even at the beach? I also will admit their menu is a bit limited, but I take it for face value. If you want a quick / light snack, a coffee, or a smoothie, then this place will satisfy your needs. I adore this little eatery at the Jersey Shore, and will be coming here to get my caffeine fix!

Door is wide open with no screens so the place is FULL of flies feasting on all the food - gross, but I haven't eaten all day and was so hungry. She doesn't say hello, though she gave me a look when I entered, so I'm waiting for her to acknowledge me while she wraps up food to get ready to close. I finally have to say hello to her she just looks doesn't answer, clearly I'm a bother. I said hi do you have any egg everything left - she replies 'we have what's out there' - thanks SO friendly! I said ok I'll have a egg bagel with tuna salad 'we have no tuna' ok I'll have a egg bagel with turkey, she said I don't know if he is still slicing meats. I said oh sorry, I thought you were open till three.. she walks in the back - I guess whoever 'he' was, was indeed still slicing meat she came back and rang up the sandwich - I live down the block..I open a hard crusty, old bagel with turkey - I'm most definitely a NY Bagel snob but I can suck up a crappy bagel if need be but this was so hard I might break a veneer - no thanks, I ended up throwing the bagel out and just ate some turkey.. Trust me, I don't make up reviews, don't waste your money - there are so many better places that WANT your business. The only reason I gave two stars is that 'he' sliced the turkey for me and it was not skimpy so I was able to eat some turkey.

We were really…read morebummed when Charlie's closed, as we've had a summer home here since the 90s and Charlie's was always a place to go and grab a special treat. Not to mention, I love supporting a small business such as the local ice cream parlor down the shore. The new owners definitely put a fair amount of work into this place to distinguish it from the old Charlie's. The ice cream shop is completely rebranded - the decor is modernized, sleek, and clean, which leaves an upscale feel to the place. I particularly love the mermaid scale wallpaper - very cute and beachy. It's also very brave of the Salty Scoop to market both ice cream and coffee because those are two very different things that are sold at different times of the day. However, while I am glad that there is an ice cream parlor here, I can't see myself or my family regularly returning to the Salty Scoop like we did Charlie's. For one, they offer a lot less flavors then other local ice cream parlors in the area. While their flavors are eclectic and interesting, the selection seems a little sparse compared to their biggest competitors (the place has two other local shops both north and south of it). But the biggest flaw of the Salty Scoop is its lack of soft ice cream. I'm not really sure why the owners have decided against having a soft ice cream machine - perhaps its because they want to showcase their fun hard flavors? - but I think it's a huge missed opportunity, especially considering this is an ice cream establishment down the shore. Last year, the Salty Scoop opened late in the season, and it had me wondering if they would add in a soft ice cream machine this year - not so. It just leaves me scratching my head. We usually keep ice cream in our freezers so hard ice cream is not something my family seeks. And while the ice cream here tastes fine, IMO it's not out-of-this world amazing that would keep me hooked and coming back for more (like, say, a gelateria). In addition, considering the whole kitsch to this place is 'cones and coffee,' I was a little disappointed to see there are basically two separate menus for ice cream and coffee. You can do A LOT with ice cream and coffee, especially in this modern social media age where a single, cool-sounding item can go viral online. (How about offering a coffee-cream shake that combines coffee and one of the fun flavors of ice cream?) One last thing - I noticed they added a branded Playa Bowls menu to their selection, which is an interesting move to get customers in on their part. While it is nice to have more selection, it yet again leaves me scratching my head and wondering what the true identity of the Salty Scoop is. Regardless, I really hope this place does well and makes it - especially since there is steep competition in the area when it comes to ice cream! The property would truly feel empty without an ice cream parlor. Bottom line - if you're a local in the area that is craving a scoop of ice cream, this will scratch that itch, although you may need to go elsewhere if you're seeking a little more selection.
