While quite a small outpost, I'm glad that a spot like this exists at Chelsea Market! Whereas the upstairs store shelves a plethora of Asian and Asian-inspired decor, handicrafts, furniture and housewares, the downstairs counterpart is like if a grocery and a food court had a small child. I'm not sure how they managed to fit 4 different food vendors along one side of the wall--kinda blows my mind--Mao's Baos, Kimbap Lab, Tea&Milk, and Pearl River Mart Little Eats. I'll be honest I haven't tried the kimbap or baos mostly because I'm not used to paying quite so much for them, though to be fair for the location it's not out of reason considering a single slice of pizza upstairs at Filaga is like $9.** As for the grocery itself, while they're slightly more pricey than other Chinatown groceries that might carry some of the same products, for the exposure and location, again it's pretty reasonable. They carry a mix of food and condiments from different Asian cultures too--for the most part Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Malaysian, Thai, and some Asian American items*. *these may have origins in traditional Asian cuisine with an American or Western influence that makes it different or maybe more understandable or palatable to non-Asian culture, or truly straight up Asian foods that are branded in English. **let's not even get into the convo of why certain cultures' cuisines are considered "fancier" or affixed a higher perceived $ value than others. Sometimes I need to remind myself of this subtle internal prejudice when ascertaining whether it's worthwhile to purchase a food or product.

Another stop on my post-hospital release tour led me to Sunac Natural Market on Metropolitan…read moreAvenue. This was my first visit, and overall, it left a positive impression. I arrived early in the morning and noticed only one staff member running the floor. I genuinely felt for the guy--handling customers, checkout, and operations solo is no easy task. That said, the surrounding area felt secure, with police presence visible downtown and nearby, which added to the sense that this is a safe and well-situated location. What truly surprised me was the product selection. Tucked among the standard natural-market staples were Asian grocery items you wouldn't typically expect to find in a store like this. Considering the cultural diversity of the neighborhood, it makes perfect sense--and it's a win. While this won't replace a full Asian market experience, it comfortably earns the title of a diversity market, and that's something worth appreciating. Given my post-surgery restrictions, my purchase was simple: fresh fruit and a health drink. Checkout was quick and efficient, and the staff--yes, the one guy--was polite, attentive, and communicative. From a customer-service standpoint, it was a strong first impression. The only letdown? The fruit basket was light on pineapple--and, bro, that mattered. Still, for a first visit, Sunac Natural Market delivered convenience, variety, and a solid neighborhood vibe. I'd return.

Apparently the rest of Manhattan decided that they also wanted to do the same. My estimate on the app was way, way off and I watched as most of the names on the board moved from left to right while I remained in the same status for quite some time. It was clear that staff was working to keep things coming and it appeared as though local schools had just gotten out and that was fueling a lot of the current clientele, but it was still disappointing how long it took and how incorrect the estimate was for my drink. I did appreciate that they had the electronic board or I would have worried that someone had snatched up my drink and took off before I even had a chance to claim it. Thankfully that was not the case! Just make sure to plan ahead if coming here, especially on a school day.
