We've made this stop almost annually for two decades. Some reviews indicate the place may have gone through management changes and certainly, the interior has been remodeled and better organized in recent years. The southern food in this store has been a legend in the past, but seems to have fallen out of favor as of late. Well, we've rolled with the changes and continue to look forward to this stop. It's the chicken that makes the stop for us. Made in small batches throughout the day, we've always found it hot, juicy, crispy and perfectly seasoned. We might add various sides or none at all; this review is more focused on the chicken. Today, we added wedge fries that were seasoned similarly to the chicken, hot and fresh. Nothing makes a visit to NC better than really good fried chicken. Border's is as good as it gets and you have the option of getting it so many different ways: individual pieces, dinners or family combinations. Today's staff were friendly, efficient and helpful. The cook came out from around the back and warned us that she just made this batch and it would be hot. She reminded us of my husband's mother, so she had our vote of confidence right away. The dining room had many seats to choose from; typical in and out seating with self-serve drinks. Looked to be tidy and more or less clean. We always use the restrooms and never have to wait. They were clean though dated. I'm fine with that. The convenience store has snacks goods and a whole lot of souvenir-type items. Not our thing but if that is what you want, the selection is sure to please. Don't forget to stop by the little produce stand located on the north side of the driveway. Mostly local, good pickings. Today the peaches were in and super sweet. Yum. If you want dining with ambience, Borders isn't your place. If you want really good chicken, fast and fresh, don't miss this stop.

I would say their fried chicken is on par with the fried chicken you find at Royal Farms gas stations. My neighbor gave me the idea to come down here to get gas for the lawn mower as they sell pure gas (non-ethanol). Coming down from Virginia Beach, it does take some time, but I am glad I came down here. When I first came up to the place, I could tell it looked more like an "old school" gas station. It felt like a bit of history. When I came inside, I was surprised that it was more than a gas station or convenience store. There is a limited supply of this gas, so there is a limit to how much you can get. You will have to pay for gas inside. The attendant inside will hold your credit/debit card while you get the gas and then will charge the actual amount at that time. Gas is available on a first come, first serve basis, so be sure to contact the store ahead of time to ensure gas is available. The area is pretty quiet, so there isn't much to choose from, but there is a lot of natural beauty around. This store looks to be more of a general store and grocery store as you can get fresh produce, etc. Think of this place as an elevated convenience store with much more options than a typical convenience store. Overall, my experience was great here. I'm glad my neighbor told me about this place, and I will look to do this in the future as well. I love the small town vibe to the place. If you are in this area, this place is worth checking out, whether it is for gas or other general items. This is the prime example of supporting a local business.

Some notes: - press "Loyalty" on the touch screen at the pump and enter your phone number that is associated with your Kroger account and follow prompts - you can get additional discounts if you buy a car wash - 7 Eleven is the convenience store attached, the store seemed clean and service was friendly The last time I was there, their gas pumps were down but they did not put any signs outside. Customers were pulling up to gas pumps and were left in the dark (me included). Some waited, some drove off. I would suggest having some "Out of Order" signs readily available to slap on the pumps should they have another IT emergency. It's nice to have an option nearby for gas. No, I was driving back to NYC from North Carolina and needed some gas before I got on that freakishly long Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. So, I pulled into the BP here and got my gas and was back on the road in a jiffy. The place was clean, there were plenty of pumps and I was able to get in and out effortlessly. Like I said, it was a gas, baby! The only weird thing was when I was pumping gas into my rental car, this guy comes over to demonstrate some car cleaning product. I told him I didn't need it and he says "Why, you don't own a car?". And I said "No I don't. I live in New York so I take the subway everywhere. Do you want to see my Metrocard?". I don't think he believed me, so he proceeded to clean the trunk of my rental. It did look good and I told him that Budget Rental Cars would thank him. He was nice enough, though, and very handsome, but I'm still concerned that he thought I would lie about not owning a car. Don't I look honest?
