However, since the new owner, Ms. Gomez took over, we have seen a significant decline in the quality of teaching, a persistent lack of individualized attention, and a significant increase in class sizes that compromised the learning environment of the students. The situation deteriorated to the point that two weeks ago we decided to withdraw our 9-year-old daughter from the program and enroll her in another, far better Taekwondo center in Folsom. The current ownership appears to prioritize increasing student volume over providing individualized attention. Students of different belt levels are frequently combined into the same classes, creating confusion for both students and parents. Additionally, the progression through belts and training milestones seems unnecessarily prolonged. They blame it to supposed deficiencies in students' "readiness" for belt testing, rather than acknowledging the impact of inconsistent teaching or insufficient oversight of their less experienced junior instructors. When we raised valid concerns about our daughter's lack of advancement and the quality of instruction she was receiving, the response from staff was dismissive and placed responsibility solely on the students and parents (e.g. suggesting that students were not practicing enough at home or that parents were not teaching them proper forms), rather than addressing the issues brought to their attention. Their current practice raises serious concerns about a potential conflict of interest, as unnecessary prolonged training directly increases the duration of monthly fees they collect from the students. When we questioned these delays and asked for clarification, they responded defensively and repeatedly, suggested enrolling in additional significantly more expensive private lessons. This clearly gave us the impression that the recommended solutions were financially motivated rather than acknowledging their teaching quality.

I was immediately impressed with how incredibly clean and well-maintained the facility is--it was clear to me that the owners and coaches take pride in providing a safe and professional training environment. After training there for 2 years now both personally and with my two daughters (7 and 10) I can attest to the fact that the instruction for both adults and kids is world-class. Jeremiah, Dave, Joel, and Julian are highly skilled black belts and have very different approaches to the art of Jiu Jitsu. Refuge has fantastic No Gi coaches as well and I can't say enough good things about Dan, Nick and Gabe. Every instructor at the academy brings a deep level of knowledge to every class, breaking down techniques in a way that's both accessible and effective for all experience levels. Whether you're brand new or more advanced, you'll feel challenged and supported. What really sets this place apart, though, is the atmosphere. It has a genuine, welcoming, family feel where everyone encourages each other to improve. The coaches are patient, disciplined, and genuinely invested in each student's growth--not just as athletes, but as people. If you're looking for a place with elite instruction, a positive community, and a clean, professional environment, this is the place for you and your family.

If you are looking for a place that goes beyond just physical techniques, this is it. Kovar's focuses heavily on building character and self-discipline. Over the past year, we've seen a massive boost in our child's confidence, which has translated into how they carry themselves outside of the dojo. One of the most valuable aspects of the program is the emphasis on anti-bullying. The instructors don't just teach kids how to protect themselves; they teach them the importance of standing up for others and de-escalating situations with integrity. The teachers are phenomenal--they are patient, encouraging, and truly know how to engage with younger children to keep them focused while having fun. We are so grateful to be part of this community and highly recommend Kovar's to any parent looking to empower their kids!

Let me tell you, I was worried because our 4 year old is a fire cracker with limitless energy, will and sassiness. As well as our 10 year old who absolutely did not want to sign up for Karate. And on day one of our trial class, my 2 kids would not stop raving about how much they loved it! My 4 year old even learned the days of the week just to know what days karate was. Master Coxe and his assistants all make sure that each child is given the time and opportunity they need to practice, as well as giving the undivided opportunity to those children who need the extra help or training for whatever reason. Both Master Coxe and Natasha Coxe have the outmost care and attention not only to the students but the parents as well. The classes are real, full of joy and excitement and STRUCTURE ! As well as their core values and principles, it makes it that much safer to take our kids and know they are learning what's right and spiritually important. Our family is thrilled with finding this new "home" and are grateful for the blessings that Shawn and Natasha Coxe have given to our family. I definitely recommend coming by and trying out a class, I promise you and your child/children will love it here! Oh and did I mention? They allow the family to participate and cheer on their loved ones and that's exactly what we do twice a week, and it's definitely given us and our kids a chance to have fun together!

Lifetime Folsom is not a gym... it's a full-blown civilization…read more Met a friend here for a workout, and since she's not a member, we had to do the whole guest pass process first. You know... the "tap here, sign here, acknowledge that squats may humble you today" routine. But I've got to give credit where it's due -- the front desk made it ridiculously easy. They were handling a phone call and getting my friend squared away at the same time, and somehow still made it all look smooth. No chaos, no confusion, no "uhhh let me get my manager." Just straight-up professionalism. The second we walked in, she looked around and said, "Is this a city or a gym?" I said, "Honestly... both." Because Lifetime Folsom is not for the weak or the directionally challenged. This place has everything. Pool, spa, cafe, workout floors, recovery zones, pickleball, tennis, locker rooms that feel fancier than some apartments... at one point I'm pretty sure if you turn the wrong corner you accidentally enroll in a wellness retreat. And my favorite part? The confidence people have before a workout. She came out of the locker room with that movie trailer energy like, "Alright, let's do this." Looking at me like, "Bring it." And I did. I coached her through the workout, and for the first 20 minutes she was hanging in there strong. Then somewhere around that 1 hour and 30 minute mark, the spirit left the body. By the end, the look had changed from "I got this" to "I would like to formally unsubscribe." And honestly? Respect. Because the workout was solid. We laughed the whole time, had great conversation, and got after it. That's what I love about Lifetime -- whether you're going hard or just trying to survive the stair climber without seeing your ancestors, it somehow still feels fun. After we wrapped up, we grabbed our stuff and headed to the cafe because recovery was no longer optional. She needed a pick-me-up, and honestly, probably a new set of legs. We grabbed shakes, sat down, and started coming back to life. Then out of nowhere she goes, "Ummm... tacos?" And I looked at her like she had just spoken the Lord's language and said, "Yes." Then she hits me with, "I got the spot. Follow me." Now THAT is elite leadership. So basically this place gave us: a killer workout, laughs, smoothies, and the launching point for Taco Tuesday. What more do you want from a gym? A zip code? Actually... Lifetime might already have one. In all, Lifetime Folsom continues to prove it's way more than just a gym. It's an experience. It's a fitness amusement park. It's where confidence goes to get tested and where post-workout taco plans are born. And honestly... that's beautiful.
