How can getting your car smogged actually be a pleasant experience? By going to 7 days a week smog. I drove across the bay bridge from SF to have my 1986 Vanagon tested here after leaving 2 shops in SF who had no clue how to smog a converted (Subaru engine) Vanagon. These guys not only knew what they were doing but were friendly, reasonably priced, and have a clean waiting room with free snacks and wifi. I'll find an excuse to come to Berkeley and have my "normal" car smog tested here in the future. read more

So, sadly, I'm with the reviewer who said s/he read one thing and then was told something different. On her/ his review in the response section it said that if anyone mentions the yelp review, they will have a $39 smog check. I went and mentioned the review. She said yes ( very nice person). She then handed me a $59 estimate. I said that wasn't what it said on yelp. I said it said $39. She said that was impossible as there was some basic standard price. I shook my head and said no, it's too much. I could have easily pulled this up and shown her the owner response on the 1 star review of their business to prove my point, but as I will not support any dishonest business, that's pointless. Do look yourself however. I still have the typed out estimate she gave me. In my car, I double checked ( sure, I could have read it wrong), but there it was. $39 + state cert fee which I missed and seemed a little sneaky, but ok it's only $8.25, so it should have been $47.25. not $59. I left, looked up another place with a discount and paid $38. It took 10 minutes. I will be giving that honest business a 5 star review next, not because it was cheaper, but because it charged what it said it would. I don't need to nickle and dime services. That's wrong. But don't lie to me. read more

I've used this place two or three times in the past, competent enough, friendly service too, but the price is a little high. Today I went in to get my car smog tested. I was the only customer so they took the car right away. While they were testing, I sat outside and read. Ten minutes later, the fellow brought the car out and I went in and paid up. I came out to the car, and as I was getting in I noticed that the floor-mounted inside trunk lever was broken off and lying on the floorboard (the lever is next to the gas cap door lever, which they needed to access). It was not broken when I gave the car to them. I brought it to the staff's attention and all denied any responsibility. It had to have been broken by one of them; the lever was intact when they took the car in, but they just couldn't be honest about it. I called the district manager and after some haggling, got him to send me a coupon for the next test. That's satisfactory enough, but I will use another one of their locations when I redeem the coupon. Not a pleasant experience. read more

Is it possible to ENJOY taking your car to get it smog tested? Yep. Pull into 7 days a Week Smog, be greeted by genuinely welcoming people, accept their hospitality -- would you like a cold drink? Snacks? (and they're free). Have a seat on the newly built deck, enjoy the flowers and good company -- other people who are as pleased as you are to be treated as though you are at a spa. Gratefully accept the discount for being a repeat customer, and, once the car is checked and they have electronically sent the results to the DMV, drive away just a little disappointed that it all didn't take a bit longer than it did. Definitely and by far the BEST place I've ever gone to get a smog, hands down! Apparently there was a wide system outage all over the East Bay in which every shop I called was experiencing in my area, so I called this place and luckily they were up and running. Also, they're pricing was half the cost of the other shops, open on Sunday, free retesting if needed, accessible area with parking, clean out door gazebo patio to hang out in while waiting, an indoor waiting area with free (full stock) snacks, coffee, water and soda galore! (I mean, what shop have you ever gone to that was clean and offered free snacks to all patrons??) I've never been to one and they're usually dirty too. Not only that, but the service was excellent- very nice and informative workers (Allan who I specifically spoke to) and I didn't have to wait longer than 15-20 minutes in addition to other customers that were ahead of us. Mind you- I commuted from Hayward to Berkeley just to get this service done and from here on out, they will be my #1 go to place for smogs! Thank you! read more

Saw the Yelp rating and called to ask if there was any problem smogging a truck with 35" tires. They said no, just bring it by when you're ready. Took it in the next day at 11:30am. I filled out brief paperwork, then just waited in the waiting room while they smogged. My truck passed (yay) and I was on my way no more than 20 minutes after getting there. I was impressed by the speed and professionalism of the guys. I don't know how things would have worked out if my truck failed, but it didn't (this time) so I can't speak to how they deal with problems. $60 to get smogged...I'm fine with that. By the way, I understand trying to get great deals on products or services, but some of you guys have got to understand that most of the equipment these guys have to pay for is unbelievably expensive. Add in rent, electricity, the cost of those "free" snacks they provide, and I'm quite happy to pay the price I paid to help cover their costs. Any less and you're just dicking this small business over. read more

Steve and Dave are great because they were helpful and tried to get me out as soon as possible. And, I received 20% off by mentioning the internet ad. Although I might have saved a few dollars elsewhere by searching, they are open on Sunday and I got the smog done right away when it convenient for me. They also have a great set-up to make you okay with the wait. They have a full sized punching bag and weights so I lifted weights first and then practiced some boxing on the punching bag. They have a great outdoor seating area with flowers, chairs, benches, tables and an umbrella so you can relax as you wait. I sat there for a while and read my newspaper. They even have an indoor area for coffee, other refreshment and free internet use. I didn't make it inside to use the internet because I went to a cool export shop next door called Ethnic Arts and bought a great Mother's Day gift. In just over an hour I was out. Nice location, excellent service, very low price of $49 for a pre-1999 manual-transmission car needing a "Star" station (using a discount coupon from smogtips dot com, totally free and painless to download) -- but "7 Days" didn't complete my smog check. To their credit, they did not charge me, either. They said that their equipment aborted the test, and gave me the printout with a hand-written explanation that the car's rpms were too low in 2nd gear and too high in 1st gear. This sounded like an operator problem rather than a car problem to me, but since they did not charge me anything and still provided as much explanation as I could expect, I was only out some valuable time. I was a bit disappointed, not upset with "7 Days." My mechanic was closed, so instead of having the car checked and potentially adjusted, I tried another highly-rated smog check place a few blocks away, Berkeley Smog Test Only Center. With an online reservation through their website, the price was $10 higher, and the location was not quite as pleasant... but they completed the test quickly and without any problem. I have no beef with "7 Days," and they might be fine for most cars, but next time I will take my car directly to "Berkeley Smog." read more
