Most other hotels/motels looked basically the same so it was nice to see something different here. There were definitely some spots which could benefit from some fresh paint or something but it wasn't a big deal. The check-in process was on the other hand more modern. Not "we have an app" modern but they have keypad locks on all the room doors so check-in was handled through a text message (which included the door code). A phone call was also an option but texting was easier for me because we were on the road and didn't always have reception. Text messages also mean all the info would be available if I needed to check it later. We were only there to sleep so we didn't need any assistance, but if anything came up we would have had to call or text the manager since there was nobody on-site. Hopefully in those cases they can respond and/or show up quickly. We do sometimes have good conversations with the front desk people but a quick simple check-in is also great. The bed was comfortable and the shower worked well. The one surprise in the room was that the tv was on when we walked in. I'm not used to that but we noticed that Top Gun: Maverick was on so we ended up watching it.

Wow -- what was I doing to make that silly a mistake? The Livingston Inn is a boutique hotel that's been around for years. It's an unusual setup, a long hallway on a single level with a couple of doors to the outside and the rooms on the other side of the hallway. That makes for less noise from neighbors across the hall and allows guests to walk across the hall to the nearest door to get outside and get into their cars. No long walks to find an elevator, dragging your luggage, and then walking past rows of cars to get to yours. It's a style more reminiscent of a motel than a hotel. The rooms are unusual, at least mine was, with the small refrigerator, microwave, sink and coffee maker on one side of the room all on an L-shaped counter and the bed on the opposite side. It felt like a small, efficiency apartment. The bed and pillows were comfortable, the wi-fi worked well. There was a lot of room to walk around in the room without tripping over something. Check in was a little strange, most likely because it is a small family-run hotel, and there isn't always anyone at the desk, even if you have a reservation, so while you wait you can explore the touristy stuff, maybe start a game of chess. The most unusual thing about the check-in, is that there is no key -- you are given a code and instructions on how to punch-in the code on your room door. If you've ever done a vacation rental home, you'll understand the process. No key to lose or misplace. Despite being on a main road, it's quiet here and a good spot to kick off exploration of the area.

The Lamar has everything a family could need including a great kitchen for making memorable meals (I love to cook and found all the supplies I needed), ample space for hanging out with and without your family, and all the modern conveniences travelers expect (there's even Wifi). The dining area provided a wonderful start to the day with a cup of coffee and a gorgeous view of the mountains. The propane grill off the back deck made dinnertime easy. It is in Emigrant a small town that boasts a great bakery and great BBQ in the warm season. To get to and from the Cabin you drive through the Chico Hot Springs Resort. In addition to hot springs Chico has a riding stable and adventure company for white water, scenic floats and hiking. This is nice if you don't want to drive to Gardiner some days. There is also a nice hike to a falls just up the road from the cabin. The cabin itself was excellent. We were there on some hot days and the cabin stayed cool if you closed the blinds as instructed. There was a full kitchen and while fussy cook husband might have wanted sharper knives for prep work he managed to make some fine meals. He also used the charcoal grill but the black flies were thick in the heat. Better him than me! Happily the long porch facing the stream is fully screened. No biting things there. The porch had a casual dining table and glider bench. The cabin had two bedrooms and one and a half baths. The half bath was in a utility room which included a washer and dryer. Priceless! There was also a comfy living room with two sofas and a glider chair. We never used the TV but it was there too. The cabin had wifi thankfully because there wasn't much cell reception. Basically it was a great place to get away, listen to the creek at night and relax.
