I usually do not write Yelp! reviews...However I felt the need to do so in this case... I do not consider myself handyman and really do not know much about how things work in construction business. I purchased a home in Aug 2013 and we decided to remodel/reconfigure the house. After long search I was referred to 4x Engineering. After talking to Efe(the owner) I immediately made a decision to hire him for his services. Efe went above and beyond in helping us narrow down things and also kept us budget aware which I really appreciated. My contractor and I were very happy with his inputs which he provided in a prompt manner. There were couple of times where we had to do some design changes and yet again 4x Eng took care of it very professionally. As I mentioned I am new to the whole remodeling/repair things, I was in need for things that I didn't even know beforehand so I would talk to Efe and he would gladly guide us through not only by his inputs but also with great referrals(designer, cabinet, tile shops etc..) 4x Engineering was referred to me for the remodeling of my home. Efe, the owner, is reliable, hardworking and attentive to every single detail. Surprisingly, he is also witty and with a great sense of humor and was very easy to work with compared to a lot of the other engineers I interviewed for the project who were simply dry and dull. Efe's personality helped him stand out from the other structural engineers. I solicited several bids for my remodeling project of an 800+ sq. ft. addition to my one-story ranch-style home. Although Efe's bid was not necessarily the lowest, I am absolutely convinced that Efe delivered the best value (in terms of the work done) for the price. Efe provided a razor-sharp focus on telling me what will work and what would not. Efe honed in on both my vision and budget and made realistic recommendations based on my needs. I appreciated his effective communication, integrity, professionalism and most of all his patience. I had to change my architectural design several times due to changes in my remodeling budget and Efe patiently worked with my ever-changing needs and accommodated every step of the way. It started out great with only a few miscommunications between architect and engineer. Then it came to an existing wall in the house that they required an additional 8 steel plates, more steel brackets, and more screws than any other actual shear wall. When my contractor questioned the engineer Pheng at the sign-off appointment (after having done all the changes requested by the engineer), he got the answer "Are you an engineer? No, so shut up." I understand it can be irritating to be questioned, but that is still no way to treat a human being let alone a contractor. In my contractors' 30+ years, he had never had to do so much addition of steel plates, etc, to an existing wall and so of course he was questioning it when I had asked him why so much was going into an existing wall instead of the walls that were the addition to the house. This led to a blow up between my contractor and the engineer as it was complete disrespect to tell him to shut up and to basically treat him like dirt since he isn't an engineer. I spoke with Efe and he backed his engineer up and no apology was given for the rude comment from his engineer that started the whole argument. I had a retired engineer friend take a look at what we were required to do and he confirmed that a lot of it was extra over-cautious requirements, even considering all the things like distance to fault lines, etc. He did confirm that it would be the strongest wall in the house though! So while I do understand that engineers have to consider that people are living in the house and any issues that would possibly make the house fall down is a liability for them, what made me give this review is the fact that they never apologized for the completely demeaning comment of making it seem like engineers are the smartest people in the world and telling my contractor to shut up. That is just plain bad attitude and no apology (even after I had apologized on behalf of my contractor for the blow up that followed). Shame on Pheng for ever saying that and I hope Efe at least addressed that as unacceptable behavior from him. read more

Indeed, he is an enthusiastic, energetic, experienced and responsible engineer. His design is easy to follow by the contractors; it is very solid yet not overkill which could be wasteful in resources and costly. I also hired Efe to oversee the foundation and framing constructions. With his supervision, the quality of my contractor's works improved dramatically and my house is standing on the solid foundation today. His charge is very reasonably when compared with my local structural engineers' design fees. Most importantly, he is always readily available when I need him.
