I recently hired Wei Hong Yang as a structural engineer for a home renovation project. Communication: His email turnaround time is about 12-24 hours after you sign the contract. As a busy professional with many clients and cases, he never answer the phone promptly when urgent matters arose. While I understand that he is a highly sought-after professional, I believe that being busy should not be used as an excuse for poor communication. Competence: While I found his technical skills to be impressive, I had some concerns about the design of the interior spaces. In particular, I found that the floor plan was not very convenient for daily use, and some aspects of the design did not take into account practical considerations. As a first-time home owner, I found that his fees added up quickly, and I felt that he was primarily focused on getting the project done quickly and obtaining the necessary permits rather than prioritizing my overall satisfaction as a customer. While I appreciate Mr. Yang's structure expertise in obtaining permits, I would have preferred a more customer-centric approach, with greater attention paid to my needs and preferences. Overall, I would NOT recommend Mr. Yang to others. If you read till here, I would advise you to carefully consider the costs (time + problems left on home owner + money) and to communicate your needs and concerns clearly throughout the process.

I have built two projects with ATA Engineering and am in the process of starting a third. I appreciate ATA's rapid response to me needs and their ability to save me thousands when the crews make a mistake. A lot of factors go in to engineering a structure including Soil Engineering and the California earthquake codes. While I feel these other entities play a huge role in the overengineering of a structure, ATA has always found the most cost effective approach to keep everyone happy. 7 of my other structural engineers are truly guilty of overengineering the structures to save their own skin, ATA is not. I appreciate the pricing that I receive from ATA to engineer my projects. They are fair with their pricing and if anything they are under priced. It is not uncommon for them to make changes to the plans due to architect/client revisions and not charge for them. My other 8 engineering firms charge by the minute for anything that changes, even to talk on the phone. Give ATA Engineering a shot at your project, you will not be dissapointed unless you expect someone to work for free.

The good news is that he was so fair and honest; he really watched costs which is so unusual, and in the end, I could be so much more innovative and creative and do so much more than I could have been with any another contracting firm; even more importantly, we had such a good time working together (even the demolition which I dreaded was a piece of cake because of Doug). I left throughout the remodel on many business trips, & there was so much progress and usually a surprising new touch Doug added every time I returned home. I feel somewhat bad writing this review just because I didn't have the fortune to work with the people that are good at this company. If you happen to get Kent Sezen, he is the weakest link. An engineer who is simultaneously rude and when called out on that rudeness, petulant and perhaps even vindictive. He ignores design constraints, and "phones-in" his work, says he's done prematurely and needs payment NOW (see prior review of Kent, its so true). He has a very large ego that is bruised easily. I will give him this: When I asked him to not treat my contractor like his personal secretary, he immediately responded "I quit", and I asked him to stay on because I thought he was over-reacting to me asking him to be nicer. I should've let him go at that moment and its on me that I didn't. At the sake of supporting his competent co-engineers, maybe they are worth using, but it's unfortunate they have tied themselves to this guy.
