I WAS VIOLENTLY ASSAULTED BY STAFF AT 45 EAST, BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU GO HERE!!! I have been to 45 East many times, including open houses, larger artists, and on the guest list/backstage for an artist I know personally. I have probably been here 20+ times, and I always had fun. I have heard horror stories of girls being drugged and raped while security stands by, and I was hesitant to go but wanted to introduce my friend to the EDM scene. I much prefer festivals as the PLUR vibe is much more welcoming, but this seemed like a good start 95% of the night was amazing, I traded multiple people for their Kandi and even had someone across the club (it was a 360 set) hold up a sign complimenting my glasses! Unfortunately 10 mins before the set ended everything changed. I was at the front with my friend right behind me and two girls randomly came up and started slamming into me and scratching me. This happens sometimes when people want to rush the rail before the end, and thats ok I just stay where I'm at and let people move along, or let security handle them. Very normal festival/edm concert behavior. Then I hear a man start shouting at me to get off the rail. Again, this is weird and aggressive, so I ignore them and look around to see if anything is happening or if they are talking to someone else. I see nothing so i just continue head-banging with everyone else. Then, out of nowhere, i feel someone strong grab my arms and shoulders, and then my neck and start pulling me back. I panicked and screamed for help, as I was being assulted by someone I didnt know. This person proceeded to drag me off the rail and halfway across the floor while I was trying to figure out if I needed to defend myself when it hit me. Nobody was helping me, this must be security! So i start screaming "what did I do" and the person ignored me and threw me out the door and told me to leave and "fuck off" At no point did the person say they were security. At no point did they say anything to indicate to me what the issue was. I can only guess one of the girls that wanted the rail said something to him and he got upset that i ignored him. I had absolutely no way to know who he was, the club was loud, dark, packed, and the only words he said were "i don't fucking care" When I got home my partner was shocked, I had scratches and cuts and large bruises on my shoulders, neck, ribs, arms, and wrists. Do. Not. Go here. Nobody will believe or care about what happened to me because I'm not in a vulnerable demographic, but I was physically assaulted for absolutely no reason by someone who did not identify themselves and escalated a non existent situation. I cant imagine what could happen to someone more defenseless than myself. I will be reaching out to 45 east about what happened, and I expect no response, but will update if I get one. read more

Every time I've been to this venue it's been a positive experience, although I wish the place was bigger and/or the layout was different because when it's packed it's not great and can get pretty warm. First time we went there we got there a little too early, the Uber dropped us off in what seemed the middle of nowhere and we got a big concerned so be aware it's not in the most populated of areas. read more

Good venue that brings in great djs. This had become the spot for my wife and I to go to for high level djs when they are on tour and pas through PDX. The staff is chill, the patio is chill and they usually have two bars open for bigger acts that sell out the venue. The bathrooms are huge so I haven't had to wait in line to go as a guy and that's a plus. Coat check is handy and their bar isn't overpriced in comparison. I've had really good, and really bad experiences here. Drinks don't always taste like they actually have alcohol in them, and they come at a steep price. On the other hand, I have had bartenders who accidentally messed up drinks and were super kind, and gave us the mess-up drinks to us for free. Security is good and mostly friendly. The music is always great, and the new-ish LED ceiling panels they added a while back really add to the ambiance! read more

The waiting area outside smelled so badly of urine and vomit that I couldn't even make it to the front of the line to get into the venue. I'm typically not sensitive but it made me ill and I had to leave! People were walking through whatever waste material was in the waiting area and treading it into the venue. Gross place. read more

Worst venue I've been to in years. Security they've employed is on a tyrannical power trip. First I was not allowed entry due to wearing open toe shoes but they said my Lady could go in even though she was wearing them too. We turned around and went all the way home then came back. Then, while I was dancing in the club a girl dropped to the floor and started twerking in front of me. Literally everyone around was was cheering her on and slapping her booty cheeks. Apparently her boyfriend became very jealous of this and singled me out. He approached me and expressed that he was unhappy about it. I told him "hey man my apologies, it's all love and I have nothing but respect for you" then offered to give him a handshake/hug. He refused my gesture saying "no, this isn't over" then went to security. The girl who was twerking never said a word to me or security that the interaction was anything other than consensual. It was all coming from her boyfriend. I tried to explain the situation to security outside and they refused to hear me about what happened. They were incredibly unprofessional with a bullying demeanor. The two of them were very amused while laughing and taunting. One of them seriously stuck their tongue out at me and I was told "you're not coming back in here". This ruined the night for me and the party I was with. It gets way too crowded for mainline events. Crowded to the point where it's not even enjoyable. Despite being so crowded, some people will insist in dancing even though there's no space. I don't get why they have a VIP section. It's Portland, not Vegas. read more

I came here to see Cheat Codes perform, and as far as the set up it's pretty nice. They have an upstairs bar and dance floor, and a deck outside for smoking. It was super clean for a club, and the prices weren't too bad for shows or drinks. The views from the deck were gorgeous. One thing I really liked was the safety patrol that they had. A number you could text if you felt unsafe. I think that's really important to have now. read more

Unz unz unz. I will say, 45 East is a solid place to check out if you're into the EDM scene. Came here with friends to check out a techno show and overall, it was a pretty chill time. Quirks to note -No free re-entry. If you leave and come back, it's a nice $5 fee -Coat Check. $5 -Cover: Will range based on artist and the type of night Other observations: -There's 2 levels to this place. 1st level = Main floor with a couple of bars options. 2nd level = bathrooms + another bar + outdoor patio that is pretty nice if you want some fresh air -Music Quality = Bass and everything = on point :) I do recommend bringing some ear plugs if you have sensitive hearing. -Space: Even though this wasn't a sold out show, definitely felt like there were plenty of space to move around easily. First and last time at this dump. My night was ruined when the bouncer wouldn't let me in with the high heeled wedge shoes I was wearing. This was my first EDM show and we were coming from cocktails at a fancy rooftop bar downtown. It's still summer so I was wearing a skirt and top with my brand new 4" J.Lo wedges. The door guy tells me I can't enter wearing those shoes. I was like "Huh?" Mind you, I am a 49 year old business professional woman, dressed nicely for a night out on the town. He tells me "A guy lost his flip flop last week as we dragged him out for fighting". Confused I ask "Do I look like I'm going to get into a fight and need to be physically dragged out?" His reply was "Rules are rules". So I demand to know where this rule is stated, being that I would have worn other shoes or not purchased a ticket at all. A $75 ticket (versus the $25 tickets). He claims that there is a link on their website that states this. Okay, there might be but I didn't see it and I am pretty sure this rule was set into place to keep out people who wear flip flops. I was told to go home to change shoes or just go home. Not knowing what to do, my male friend says he has water socks in his Jeep. UGH!!! Seriously. I ended up having to wear water socks into the club because I could not be trusted not to create havoc with my wedges. Ironically, I'm be more likely to fight in water socks than heels, but whatever. Now, I am in water socks and feel gross and unsexy and don't feel like dancing. I actually felt like I was being punked. For reasons unknown - I as allowed to take mace into the club - but not wedge sandals. The indoor bouncers were jerks too and kept barking at me to not stop on the stairs (to take in the show) or walk on them slowly, to not walk in the aisle way to slowly etc. The stairs are very wide, no one else was on them and the place was not to capacity. I had the better (more expensive tickets) but that meant nothing. No seat or spot in the VIP area. Just an invisible stamp on my forehead that said "sucker". I'm sure I was being treated poorly because of the heinous wet socks/Shrek shoes I was wearing - with a skirt. A friend mentioned that there would be a Halloween party at East 45. Ha! This is the very last place in Portland I will return to, much less pay money to enter. God forbid the next dress code infraction I may commit. This place is for people with VERY LOW STANDARDS and EXPECTATIONS. It's dark, dirty, and the staff (excluding the bartenders) is rude. In other words, it's soo Portland. Lastly, Oakenfold should have sold this place out and I think the reason he didn't is because of the reputation this place now has for being dress code Nazi's and over zealous to throw customers out. read more

I haven't been to any other venues in Portland but had a great time at 45 East for Gabriel & Dresden in February 2020. Any staff we interacted with were very friendly and professional- from security, ticket counter, coat-check, bar, bouncer, etc. Everything seems well organized, and we didn't experience a long wait at any time for getting in, using the restrooms, or getting through bar/coat-check lines. The venue itself has a great layout, giving the crowd plenty of room to spread out while maintaining a good vantage point, and the 2nd floor (with an outdoor smoking area) really sets this place apart from similar venues back in Seattle. We were just issued a new MANDATORY mask mandate and your regulation of it is decidedly subpar! There are people running around this place without, even, the pretense of drinking a drink mask less ! The only reasons that I am here are that I love to dance and I believed that you would enforce the MANDATORY mask policy. I am here, literally, one day after the new MANDATE.... 8-14-21! Some of us have been very diligent about trying to stave off COVID and it is disappointing that this business is not giving the same attention to the issue. I can say that I do not plan to return until such time that either COVID is no longer an issue or that you make me aware that you are serious about the pandemic issues and enforcement of the measures surrounding the problem. For those into the EDM scene, this is the place where most 21+ shows are going to be. I've been going here for the last 3 years or so, and have never really had any issues with it. The bouncers always seem chill and even strike up conversations with people in line. They kick out people who I've seen really deserve to be kicked out (too rowdy, starting fights, falling all over the floor, etc). Tickets to shows are generally around $30, but I've been to shows at $10 and some at $40, so it depends on the artists who come through. The drinks are alright, sometimes a little syrupy, so shots are probably the way to go. Overall, I'm giving it 4stars because I've never had issues with security, have always been able to find parking around the area, and always have a good time when DJs come to town. read more

Went two weeks ago with my queer friend who identifies as female. We got kicked out for being in the womens restroom line. They let us back in after we argued with them for a bit. Extremely embarrassing nonetheless. Decided to give it another chance this week and got kicked out again for going into the same bathroom. Most rude staffing/security ever. RACIST STAFF - Stay Away I went here for the New Years Eve event. I was only there for about an hour (after spending $25) before being pushed down the stairs. I fell hard and sustained bad injuries but the bouncers immediately removed my friend and I without listening. I did not receive medical attention, no one offered me band-aids or checked for a concussion. I did not fall from being drunk but from the crowds of people pushing both ways on the stairs. We tried to enter again but were denied, while plenty of White people who were belligerently drunk were allowed to enter. I hate leaving bad reviews for any business, but this is by far the worst music venue I've been to in Portland, and I've been to quite a few for shows. For starters, they have dumb rules. I was turned away at the door because my wedge high heeled shoes-which I regularly wear to shows/concerts- didn't have a strap around then. Wtf? I went home and changed into sneakers and returned. Inside the club, the lighting was nice but the security staff had major attitudes and hovered around the harmless people who were there to see an amazing artist perform as though were we doing something wrong. Maybe the staff were just bored? The main issue I have with this place are the acoustics/sound system. I heard little bass and the speakers mainly projected the music/sound into the center of the room when there should have been speakers in the corners too. That plus the lack of bass meant the sound sucked. And I wasn't the only music fan to notice this. The staff also cut short the artist, which pissed off a lot of people who I could hear saying they would never come back to that venue again. They even turned the lights on and the unfriendly security quickly ushered people out. And no the show wasn't running long, the staff actually cut the artist short. I'm never going back to this place again as it has no draw. I love electronic music and feel it's a shame many artists perform at this venue. Lovecraft, Bithouse Saloon, and Star Theater are so much better. read more

This place is pretty cool. Its the closest thing to a club (well it is definitely a club!) that I've been to in Portland. One of the best parts of going to this venue is that although its packed with people, but I never really felt crowded or overwhelmed with the amount of people inside... like you typically do in dance clubs in any other major city. The night I went the music was upbeat and electronic, and definitely dance-able. I wish that the artist had a little bit more originality, but after a few drinks I didn't really care. Definitely younger people here, and loud music. Only come here if you're ready to have a fun evening! read more

I found 45 East by recommendation of my Lyft driver after trying and failing at several other night clubs. I attended last night with a group of friends and at first I was a little disappointed. We arrived around 1115 pm and there was literally about 6 people in the entire club, and the 2nd floor was empty. I was pretty shocked. However, that was because another big DJ (Troye Boy) was at their sister club until midnight. So by midnight the place was packed. Even Troye Boy showed up. Im from LA where drinks are super expensive and was excited to see the price of well drink to be only $6! I mean they aren't huge drinks but they will get you there! This space is actually beautifully done. The lighting is just right, the VIP areas are really tight and the bar looks fantastic. I went to the Darude show here and I have not been here in years. It was nice to see what they had done with the space. The Dance Floor was great and the sound system is pretty dope. They do a lot of EDM shows here and the crowd is super diverse so no matter who you are, you should feel pretty comfortable in this space. I even saw pretty much all ages as well... Use to LOVE coming here but I paid money to dance. Not stand shoulder to shoulder shifting with the crowd. With the improvements you'd think it would feel less packed. This is a review for the Jade Club, which is the second floor of 45 East and acts as a venue for smaller acts and DJs. I came here to see a DJ (DJ Manny) on a Saturday night and it was a great time. I was super impressed with the space, it was nice and clean with high ceilings, plenty of little nooks with seats, places to put your drinks down. One wall had images projected on it and it was a professional set-up. The spacious open-air balcony was great and made sure the place didn't get too stuffy. Big windows gave some nice views. The soundsystem was also top-notch and was able to fill up the room nicely. I would definitely recommend earplugs regardless. I've lost track of how many different names this space has had, but no matter it's called, it's the worst. After last night I've sworn it off completely. The tone is set when all the guys get patted down as they enter (ladies don't usually). Security is thick, and constantly barking at people to clear areas, keep moving, or whatever. They charge $5 for re-entry, which I'm sure is to prevent people getting wasted in their cars, but still. Inside the space is nicely done, and they've added some comfy seating in the back area, but a quarter of the main space is cordoned off for VIP tables, which are usually empty. PDX doesn't really do VIP. When I go see a DJ, I want to dance. People don't come here to dance, they come here to get wasted. It usually feels like amateur hour, with people drunk and high, bumping into each other, and talking over the music. Dancing isn't great there anyway, because the dance floor is sticky from spilled drinks from all that bumping, so every time you pick up your feet, you feel your shoes peeling off the floor. The sound system is loud, but not very good. You'll need earplugs, but you'll still hear the crowd's chatter over the music. And you'll need to be in a small sweet spot near the front for the sound to be balanced. Other reviews praise the free water. People, it is OREGON STATE LAW that water must be free. They do not get props for abiding by a STATE LAW, especially when the water cups are paper snowcone holders that fall apart after 5 minutes. Two bright spots: 1. The staff is not as horrible as you might expect--they deal with a lot of asshats, as evidenced by the poorly written "Code of Conduct" posted on the walls. They can even be friendly once they realize you're not completely drunk or belligerent. 2. And... I probably would have enjoyed this place a lot when I was 23. It's been about 3 months since I've moved to Oregon. Where do I go to listen to my EDM DJ's? 45 East. Always. For half the cost of SF prices, I'm able to enjoy talented artists while not being too crowded. I like crowds, but I don't like to be squished into jelly. The venue is small, but because its 21+ AND it doesn't really start until 10pm, it isn't too populated. That being said, the main act starts around midnight. Sorry for those oldies out there :P Anywho, I've never had a problem while going here. The bouncers don't give attitude and the bartenders do their job. There's coat check available which many clubs don't (Oh hello... it's freezing in Oregon). +Parking is super convenient and easy ++Friendliest people I've ever met +++Getting to the front was never easier **Upstairs is another club called the Jade Club.
