It is staffed during the day and early evenings which means you can make an appointment with a trainer, or have questions answered. Rob, the owner, is AMAZING. He really makes an effort to get to know all of the members, and is incredible at building rapport. ALL business owners could learn from him! Also, the staff is incredible. All very friendly and nonjudgmental, ready to answer questions pertaining to health at anytime. The other patrons of the gym are also very friendly. Ages range from late teens to early 70s- I never feel out of place or uncomfortable. This gym offers a variety of cardio equipment (you NEVER have to wait for a machine), has a weight circuit, a large free weight area, and a mid-size 'studio' area. Also, for those who tan, it offers one tanning bed which is NEW and LARGE. I work shift work and tend to be a night owl, sometimes THE ONLY time I have to get a work out/tan in is at 3am- this place TOTALLY meet my needs. For UNLIMITED tanning and Gym access I pay around $63.00, without the tanning it would be about $18 less- VERY REASONABLE. Also, they offer month to month plans so you don't have to sign a contract if it's not for you. What do they have? 24 hr access, towel service, individual shower rooms, awesome trainers that know you by first name, yoga studio with video workouts, tvs, good looking people, and free parking. All downtown. Yes, it's true. Good amount of cardio equipment, and more weights than you can imagine. My gym buddies have also commented that they have more machines than most locations. The shower and bathrooms are also really new and clean, no gross tiles with the weird swampy smells, and rusty metal stuff. and because it's on 1st street, you can grab a bite just about anywhere along this street because you had a great workout and you deserve it! It's been sort of counter productive for me, but I assume I'm the only one with no willpower.

When registering I went to their website and tried to sign in but it wasn't working. So I called and left a message about it. I got a call back the next day from Sandra saying I could register over the phone. They were in the middle of changing their booking service over to the Mindbody system at the time. Registering with the app is super easy now. I find it a little pricey at $30 for drop in tho. The place is in the middle of an industrial area but it was well marked and I was able to find it in the dark just fine. When arriving I was greeted right away by Jesse who was teaching the class. They have a seating area to chill and chat. The change room area was a little rough around the edges. It's a unisex area with box cubbies for your things, no lockers. the change rooms are individual rooms and two unisex washrooms with showers. Just bring your own towel and soaps. The gym itself is an adult playground. It's hard to find something they haven't thought of. All of your universal obstacles are built that you'll find in most races. There's a turf area as well and a few rowing machines. For the class we did a quick warm up on the rowing machines and then of course, burpees. After that there was what Jesse called "12 days of Christmas" workout written on the board. 12 different exercises to get through while working your way back through the ones you already did each round. It was great in that it used the whole space so in between you were running and it gave you many attempts at each one to practice and get better. We had a 40 min cap to get through all 12 before cool down. Anything we had questions about he went over and would show techniques otherwise he just let us go at our own pace while offering lots of high fives and encouragement. The course included: 1.rope climb 2. crawls 3. tire flip 4. 4ft wall 5. burpees x5 6. 6 ft wall 7. push ups x7 8. 8 ft wall 9. box jumps x9 10. KB squats x10 11. turf sprint 12. monkey bars It was so much fun and inspired friendly competition with those in the class like a race. Though everyone was so welcoming and encouraging. We offered each other tips and encouragement. It was a great atmosphere. After time was up we did our own cool down. I was able to catch some time to play on a few of the other obstacles and try for the first time while not in an actual race. The others said they class is never the same and changes up so you never get bored and can train to be well rounded in all obstacles. Hopefully they successfully expand and get one of these gyms in Edmonton. I would sign up for a membership right away. If you want to get into OCR or are just one of those people who get bored with conventional workouts this place is literally an adult playground. And for those who race regularly its a great indoor facility to keep your bruises year round!

The second time I went back, I attended the Basics class and it was great. They started with low weight to help me "feel" my form and then built up from there. What I like about it: - A great range of equipment, - energetic classmates and instructors, - it's half way between my place and my boyfriends so it's convenient for both of us - there's parking and I don't have to pay to park there - I like that workouts get switched up daily and I feel like I'll be fitter and stronger two weeks from now. What I don't like about it: - I still sort of want the mirrors but this is a big no=no in cross fit - it was a tiny bit intimidating at first but I think that's the case with every new gym I've ever tried. I started at RCR…read morein 2013 after being introduced to the gym through a friend who coached at the gym at the time Ben. Immediately I felt welcomed by the coaching staff who spent much more time with me then they had to. I remember one instance within my first two months where coaches and owners Ken and Bryan spent over an hour after class working with me on my snatch, I must have gone through over 100 reps in that hour and I learned so much about positioning and speed. Coach Dylan did the same thing for me with muscle ups the following month and eventually I got one. It's hard to remember all the times that coaches spent extra time with me after or before class(and we would be here all day if I told you), but I can tell you that had to be hundreds during my nearly 3 years at Ramsay. The Classes at Ramsay are a hour long each but often you'll find people show up quite early to stretch and socialize with other members. The format generally consists of a warm up then a strength or skill portion followed by a Metcon. The strength portion and metcons are almost always programmed as a part of a bigger picture with a focus on certain skills whether it be Olympic lifting, Gymnastics, Conditioning or any combination of those and I saw very consistent and steady improvements during my time at Ramsay. If your looking to get into Olympic weightlifting RCR also has a barbell club which is fantastic. I spent the majority of my last year with RCR working on Olympic lifting with coach Geoff. He also led me through my first weightlifting competition which was a blast. The barbell club has to be one of the funnest group I've ever had the pleasure to train with and I've made some great friends through the club. If I had one final thing to say about RCR I would say that most people walk through the doors hoping to get fit but the reason most people stick around is because of the community, I made a lot of great friends during my time at RCR and had some great experience as a result of my time there.

Pilates...that's like yoga right? WRONG…read more My physio recommended I do it to increase strength in my core. I guess I thought pilates would be like kind of like that infomercial that we've all seen on tv with some crazy lady pumping her arms back and forth while she does a weird sit up. Yeah, it's not like that at all and it's definitely not like yoga (whoops!) Basically, it's about making sure that the right muscles do the work so that you can get stronger. I went in hoping it would help with back pain...I didn't really think that it could help with other things - like my running! This place is clean, the instructors are super knowledgeable, and the small class sizes ensure that you actually get some personal attention (which is kind of the point - if form is so important, you need someone to actually pay attention to your form). Sometimes I like to pretend that I'm all hard core so I'll do a TRX class and then shuffle around for a few days afterward. I highly recommend that you invest in a few solo sessions to start - that way you learn the principles and correct movements so that you'll actually get the most out of the classes. Bottom line - No crazy ladies or weird arm pumping for me! Pilates has been such a great compliment to my other activities. If you are looking to get stronger, help with pain, or just a kick ass workout, try it out. Go in with an open mind and you will learn a ton about your body. Highly recommend.
