I've really enjoyed my experience so far training at 4 Star Gym. Coming from gyms where I felt overwhelmed by the size and crowds, 4 Star provides a more personal environment that has allowed me to focus fully on my workouts without distractions or intimidation. What I appreciate most is the structured programming - having my sessions planned out ahead of time takes the guesswork out of workouts for me. Crossing items off the checklist as I complete them makes workouts more interactive and fun. My trainer has also done an excellent job breaking down exercises to ensure I have the form down before progressing. The small class sizes mean I receive individualized attention to learn proper form. I've been able to ease into training at a comfortable pace through the bootcamp format. The gym has 2 membership paths -- you can opt to just have the bare gym membership or a coaching and training plan (which also includes open gym slots). I've opted for the coaching and training from the beginning and never looked back! The team puts together your program based on a baseline and all you have to do is show up and do the work (perfect if you just don't want to put in the time to come up with this yourself). A personal trainer would cost you probably over $60 per session and is completely unnecessary -- you really don't need someone watching you for every single rep. Jason and the team make sure your foundations are perfect and are always around to help watch and you for the more difficult sets.The gym has everything you need and the team is always looking to get the most essentials. This spot gives off OG lifter vibes, but with modern sensibility. Meaning, lift but also, don't lift like a tool and get yourself hurt. Great culture, no egos, just lifting. This is a great place to train for many reasons. Jason is very welcoming and positive. He and all the coaches are very friendly and knowledgable. The interface that Jason created for the gym and clients is awesome - it has a community page, your training program and video tutorials on exercises. Everything you need in one spot - so convenient! When I started training here, I tested all my lifts, and then received a program based off of that. I have been coming to this gym off and on for over eight years(wish I was more consistent, that's my fault smh). When I first started it was a little smaller, but since that time it has really grown and expanded. Back then I searched for a while for a great gym to get some powerlifting in without getting mean stares or outright kicked out for deadlifting too heavy(like some places I won't mention), but in this area of Los Angeles that was hard to find. Eventually I found Four Star Gym and I've been coming back ever since. There's a competition bench, chalk, plenty of bars, lb and kg plates, everything a true lifter would need and more. There's even some cardio equipment. You won't be disappointed at all. Mike and Jason are awesome guys. I never did join the classes, preferring to train on my own either late at night or early in the morning, but when I have been there during the training class hours I saw plenty people getting after it with great form and awesome coaching. Also, if I've ever had a question or concern they've both been super responsive. Can't go wrong with this gym, especially if you want to lift heavy. If you get a key it's basically like your own private 24 hour gym, which you can't beat. Just make sure you clean up after yourself! Which most people do. Can't recommend them enough! Looking for the best free-weight gym in the south bay?! Look no further! 4Star is the top-notch weightlifting/bodybuilding/powerlifting gym in the south bay! I've been going here for about 3 years. The gym may be intimidating from the outside, but everyone there is very friendly and welcoming. Although, I tend to not really socialize there (I'm very much "in the zone" while working out), most people are very cordial. Their training staff are very personable, and break-down lifting for each person, according to their skill level. I go in the early morning, and it's usually pretty clear, maybe 10 people at the most. The gym consists of 2 small rooms, one full of power racks, and the other full of dumbbells and a couple machines. I've heard it can get pretty busy in the afternoon/evening, but I've not been so I don't know personally. If you're serious about weight lifting/bodybuilding, then this is your place! And if you're just a beginner, this is also a good spot, the trainers will be glad to show you the ropes (they even have literal ropes available)! read more

The only reason I go is to play with the dogs, but I usually end up staying to work out anyway. I've been going to this gym for a few years now and have enjoyed it so much more than any other gym I have been to previously. In other gyms I never felt any sort of connection to the employees and I felt intimidated by the equipment. Here when I work out it feels like I'm working out with friends. Talking to the trainers helps the time pass by faster, and they always help me out if I have a question or am struggling with a particular exercise. Coming here has also been extremely helpful because I have chronic back problems that don't always allow me to work out, but when I have a flare up Jason is always quick to give me alternate exercises or stretches I can do to stay active while not overly straining my back. Working with him, I have been able to get much stronger and lose weight, and as someone who has had to work through health issues in the past, Jason knows how to coach somebody through their physical limitations while still helping them to get in better shape. read more

Truly felt Jason rebuilt my lifts from the ground up during the strength assessment. Been lifting for a while but got serious about Powerlifting a year and a half ago. It was refreshing to work with someone who prioritized longevity and actively sought to humble me and not to put number first. I ended up not going for the private coaching. Not because it wasn't worth it.. it 100% is but just because of my own personal budgeting. I still opted for a gym membership and it's an ideal place to exercise. You know those gyms where: - everyone's a douchebag - no one knows what the hell they're doing - someone hogs equipment even though they're using it incorrectly - everyone's rude and inconsiderate - the place is overly crowded - people do curls in the squat rack That's NOT this place. That's why I love going there. 4 Star Gym has been in El Segundo for decades (I want to say 40 years). It's a small, private gym with adequate equipment. That being said, no, there are no ellipticals or bikes and there is only one treadmill. However, there are tons of plates, a forza competition bench, dumbbells up to 200 lbs, a forza deadlift platform, bands, kettlebells, chains, and bells- everything you need to work out for real. My boyfriend and I found this gym after spending about year trying to powerlift at 24-hour fitness and finding ourselves getting dirty looks from people who couldn't even squat their own body weight. The atmosphere at 4 Star Gym is unpretentious and very committed to quality lifting and exercise. Most patrons have been regulars for years, but they're very open and welcoming. Many have competed in power lifting and have given valuable tips to help our progress. Mike is the owner of the gym and is very helpful and friendly. He is very committed to the upkeep- constantly upgrading and cleaning. The pricing for membership varies depending on whether you pay for 3, 6, or 12 months (with 12 months yielding the lowest monthly fee). For an additional $10 you are given an electronic key, which gains you access to the gym on a 24-hour basis (super convenient). For a test run, you can work out once for $10. Parking in the evenings is very easy since the street parking is fairly open (restricted to 2 hours before 6pm). While I still maintain my "other gym membership" for when I'm out of town, this is my regular spot. read more

I used to work out here for a couple of years. As far as gyms goes, this is a small one (my favorite kind of gym) because I can focus on my workouts and not be deafened by too loud house/dance music and the smell of guys wearing Dolce & Gabbana cologne and high 5-ing each other every 5 minutes like I get when I do the big box gyms. The only thing that hurts this gym is the fact that the fitness instructor tends to treat people that are NOT his clientele like they don't exist or be downright rude to them. Its 24 hour access means that one can avoid anybody whom they don't want to deal with which is why I changed my schedule a few times to avoid the groups. Douchebaggery aside,its a good gym. The thing that bugs me about this place is the fact that there's only one cardio machine (treadmill) and its broken half of the time, a big turn off for me. I would recommend this gym IF they get some more cardio machines in. No shower, very small changing room with only a curtain between you & privacy and a single co-ed toilet. read more

I love 4 Star Gym! I come here to train with Jason and the Game Time Strength team and has come to be my second home. If you're looking for a straight to the point, old school iron, powerlifting gym (also a USPA certified training center) this is it. All the squat racks you could wish for ... I've never had to wait to use equipment. Awesome places to eat in the area and only a couple blocks away from the beach (someone like me takes these types of things into consideration when picking a place to train lol). This gym was pretty cool when I first started going there. All the metal there was pretty good to see all racks and all free weights was cool. And they have top of the line stuff here Buuut the thing I hated was that if I wasn't paying some ridiculous amount of 200+ a month I could only train when the wasn't there. Got kind of annyoing I had to go really early or late at night. Or if u did manage to work out while the team was there it was kind of like a "who is this guy and why is he still here vibe" "he doesn't pay to work out with us" vibe. And it didn't take alot of people to get the gym packed. For instance one time one of my friends was using a resistance band to dead lift and the manager came to tell us "stop it's a new band" hmm isn't that what a new band is for? To use for its resistance? Another we forgot a dipping belt here for a few days and then when my friend took it back he got accused of stealing? Idk great gym but if you can't pay that monthly fee to be on the team you'll be a outcast. read more
