Oktoberfest in Lilburn has always trumped this festival for me in the past (both are annually held…read morethe first Sat in October), but this year I managed to do BOTH. I think I may have started a new family tradition, we had so much fun. In 2013, the prices were $30 for general admission, $45 for VIP tickets. As a newbie, usually I would go economy class until I had a chance to "see how things go", but I knew I would want the shirt either way so it was a bargain price for me. Lots of VIP tables near the food and the bandstand, and event volunteers bringing your beer. Yep, the VIP tix are worth it... Admission allows for unlimited* tastings, and that's really what brings everyone out. I was expecting a lot more draft selections; most of the 120 beers available were in bottles. Also mostly absent were the owners/bottlers/distributors. The few that I did meet were very excited to talk about their line, and I love meeting people who enjoy what they do. The other tables were manned by volunteers, many of whom studied up on the beers they were pouring. I may have imagined it, but I think at *least* half of the attendees were volunteers. Which is an even more economical way to attend. A lot of them had either just ended their shift and were off to tasting, or had been tasting and were about to begin a shift. Food from local restaurants was good, too. Weather was perfect. Next year, the first Saturday in October is the 4th. Don't ask me to come to your your aunt's birthday party. No, I can't drive you home from getting your wisdom teeth out. So sorry, your wedding will just have to go on without me - I'm busy that day. (*Unlimited = drink as many as you want, there are rideshares available; but if you start to make an ass of yourself you will a) appear in your friend's youtube video and/or 2) be asked to leave - possibly while wearing some shiny new bracelets courtesy Gwinnett Co Police.)

It was supposed to have mayo on it, but there was none. Also, lettuce and tomato would have been a nice addition to the two patties. My friend got wings, five hot and five hot garlic. The wings were a decent size, but he prefers them saucy which they were not. Service was fine. Our server checked on us the appropriate amount of times to see if we needed anything. We were there on a Wednesday and took advantage of their deals which was $1 off draft and $5 off hamburger. Everything was fine, just not amazing...but it is just bar food.

I've been to Moonshiners several times with my best friend, who actually introduced me to the bar…read more We've enjoyed the atmosphere and have had some genuinely positive interactions with the bartending staff, so it's disappointing that our most recent experience has made me question whether I want to return. Over several visits, I've noticed that certain security personnel seem to pay an unusual amount of attention to us. At first, I brushed it off. There have been instances where it felt like security was watching us closely and waiting for an opportunity to confront us. I didn't want to assume the worst, but the pattern became difficult to ignore. Last night, things escalated. We were sitting at the bar, ordered food, and took it outside to the patio. Before we went outside, security specifically reminded us to make sure we paid our tab before leaving. We did exactly that and paid our tab before we left the building. As we were walking out, the same security personnel came rushing after us insisting that we needed to pay. We explained that the tab had already been paid, but instead of simply verifying it with the bartender or checking the register, the situation escalated. My friend was physically pushed by security, and what followed became an extremely serious and dangerous confrontation. What bothers me most is that this could have been handled so easily. If there was a question about our tab, simply check the payment. There was absolutely no reason for the situation to become physical. I'm not going to label the experience as racism simply because we felt singled out, nor am I going to make an accusation of homophobia that I can't definitively prove. However, we are two gay Black men, and the repeated scrutiny and aggressive treatment from certain security personnel has made us question whether our presence is genuinely welcome. I want to emphasize that some of the bartenders have always been kind to us, which makes this even more frustrating. My issue is specifically with the way certain security personnel are interacting with customers. Management should seriously review how their security staff are trained to approach and de-escalate situations. Customers should not leave a neighborhood bar feeling watched, targeted, or physically unsafe. I hope management takes this feedback seriously because we genuinely enjoyed coming here before this experience.
