The space is well laid out and kept clean; staff is friendly and gets to know you; and every coach knows exactly what they're doing. Boxing coaches like Jordan structure a class so you learn technique, get a good workout, and condition your body. And jiu-jitsu classes led by Ron or Mike challenge you to learn every time you visit. (They even got this girl rolling around for the sport!) This isn't a gym where you just slug your fists into a bag and get a summer body: You're going to learn real skills here to work your body and brain, and give you self defense techniques. If you've thought about trying boxing, kickboxing, or jiu-jitsu, give Urban Boxing a try - I think your first class is free, too.

Front dark staff was great at giving us a run down of what to expect in the class prior to it starting. And where all the amenities are. The shower room Was nice and spacious (although being your own towel) and I appreciated that they had tampons in the women's bathroom. The class was a nice combo of cardio, core/strength, and skills. I appreciated the constant movement around. The studio to different areas, including the occasional lap around the entire facility. Class didn't feel too big and we had enough space to do our partner work and hit the bags without hitting each other. The instructor did some individual work but it was limited to 30 seconds or less give. There were 15-20 people in the class. He was available when I had questions about what the combo we were practicing was (if I didn't get it the first two times) and made several corrections to my form along the way. All levels class was good for beginners and definitely a moderate to high intensity workout (depending on how hard you go).

But more importantly, this place is a community. N-Flux has the best instructors and classes you will find anywhere in DC if you're interested in taking Krav Maga, Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, and all sorts of other martial arts and combat sports. Chris and Colleen are the best instructors I've ever seen. They don't just want you to get skills, they teach concepts, conditioning, and character. Part of the training is how to be a good classmate, and experienced students help newer students and welcome new people. As a result, you're not just coming for a workout, you walk away welcomed and encouraged to be the best you can be -in everything. The classes are challenging in the best way, even their Yoga classes (and I hated yoga before I took N-Flux yoga with the amazing Scott and Maicie!). Chris and Colleen are tough and push you to be your best. Since starting, I've lost 25 pounds, gained 25 new friends, and according to my work colleagues, "am the happiest I've ever been." This place is way more than a gym and you won't know what you're missing until you come try it for yourself.

Last December, I wanted to check out jui-jitsu and was lucky to land at Capitol Combat (a Darcio Lira school). This is NOT a commercial school with huge membership fees that churns through new students, just to see them drop out after a few months. Rather, CC is a small group of committed jiu-jitsu practitioners headed up by two great teachers (Jay and Joe). Both teachers are thoroughly knowledgeable (with solid lineage in judo, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu), but easy-going. The school is welcoming to everyone from total novices to those with more experience, but I'd say the preference is probably for new folks with limited experience (blue or white belt) in order to build solid skills from the ground up. Classes are Monday and Wednesday evenings starting at 8:45 pm. CC moved from DC and currently practices at Mind Your Body Oasis yoga studio, which is a bit cramped by glass mirrors. I hope that the school will grow into a larger location soon. The cost is one of the lowest (if not the lowest) around town. CC has another location in Fredericksburg, VA. The dojo there is awesome, and we work out with them from time to time; some of them come up on Wednesdays, and we occasionally go down there on weekends. That location is bigger and has several students that regularly compete (and win) tournaments. I hope to see you on the mat!

I am 48 years old, and I haven't had formal martial arts training in over 10 years. I moved here back in 2020 during the pandemic and because of work as well as unhealthy choices, my fitness took a toll. I'm fact my overall well being took a toll. I was headed towards a negative path in my life and when you are faced with adversity, you have 2 choices: 1. Let adversity consume you. 2. You make changes. My problem was I didn't know how to start making those changes. Enter Elevate MMA. One day while driving in falls Church for groceries, I saw a banner for an MMA gym. Something intrigued me. I learned immediately that the gym is operated and taught by World Class MMA fighter and World Class MMA Coach and UFC veteran Master Siyar Bahadurzada who has trained alongside some of the greatest fighters in MMA history. At that point, I had to learn more. I met Master Siyar in person and I talked to him about my short and long term goals. He listened to me and assured me that as long as I come in and commit to training and give it my best, I will see the results I want. He is 1000% right. The only way you will know if something is possible or impossible is if you give it a try. Never accept any limitations that have been placed upon you. When you learn to be out of your comfort zone, that is when change happens. That change will produce growth. Master Siyar is true martial artist and he is passionate about what he does and how it affects people. His teaching style is phenomenal as he is patient, gives clear instructions, and as long as you give it your best, he will take care of the rest and build you up from there. I invite you to come in and experience Elevate MMA for yourself. I have been here now for 3 weeks and already, I have lost 4.5 pounds, I am getting stronger, and building my confidence day by day. I am so proud to be a student of this school. Elevate MMA offers something great for everyone. So I leave you all with this: "The way you do anything is the way you will do everything." If you are determined to better yourself, then I will see you at ELEVATE MMA. Think about it, take action, and own it! Let's go!
