He was a poet, revolutionary philosopher, journalist, translator, professor, publisher, and author of "Cultivo Una Rosa Blanca" . He dedicated his life to the promotion of liberty and political independence for Cuba. His death during a battle against Spanish troops at the Battle of Dos Ríos was used to rally people to the cause of the independence of Cuba from Spain. The land the park is on has a lot of history. This area was used by the Tequesta people around 400 AD. In 1982 while developing the park, underneath I-95, an ancient Tequesta camp was discovered. Pottery shards, shell tools, arow heads, and a woman's grave were excavated. In 1959 Fidel Castro took over Cuba transforming it into a communist state. Refugees began fleeing the island for Miami. In 1980, 4,000 Cuban political refugees who fled Cuba during the Mariel boat lift took refuge in a tent city here for two months. On October 27, 1984 the park opened and was dedicated to José Martí. The park is located directly on the historic Miami River where today you can enjoy stunning views as the boats sail by. Park amenities include a public pool, playground, outdoor fitness equipment, basketball court, picnic tables, and a community center offering summer and winter camps, and youth and teen programs. The park also has a bust of José Martí donated to the city by Cuba in the 1950s. José Martí park is part of the Miami River Greenway, a 6.2 mile trail that begins at Bayfront Park and ends at NW 24th Ave. The trail links neighborhoods, businesses, cultural attractions, historic sites, and nine public parks along both banks of the Miami River.

What is capoeira? Dance fighting? While that answer is partially correct (breakdancing moves are…read morebased on capoeira) Capoeira is much more than that. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that dates back to the slavery era in Bahia, Brazil. Unlike any other form of martial art, capoeira is practiced with music. Without music there is no capoeira, as the moves performed are driven by the rhythmic sounds of the atabaque (similar to a conga drum), the berimbau (a stringed instrument that resembles a bow), and the pandeiro (like a tamborine). A true capoeirista not only masters the moves, but also masters the instruments. Capoeira Sol e Lua provides the groundwork to lead even a new student upon the path to becoming an excellent capoeirista. Sol e Lua is led by Instructora India, an amazing teacher who strives to get the very best out of her students. Classes meet on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. On MWF Beginners class goes from 6:30-8:00pm and the Advanced level class goes from 8:00-9:00pm. On Saturdays, a music class goes from 10-11am, and the all-levels class goes from 11am-12noon. It should be noted, however, that beginners are encouraged to attend the advanced levels classes as most of the classes are mixed anyways. Drop-in rates are $15 a class, but reasonably priced monthly rates with unlimited classes are also available. Capoeira has provided me with one of the best workouts I have ever experienced. It really pushes you to challenge yourself, both mentally and physically. While the workouts are tough, they are a lot of fun. I highly recommend Sol e Lua as an excellent school to learn, train, and play capoeira. Axe!

Sergio, the owner and lead instructor, greeted me promptly when I arrived, asked me some questions about my interest and experience, and then introduced me to Melissa, another instructor that would assist him in our beginner class of six students. The one hour class was exactly what I had been looking for! Sergio and Melissa were extremely knowledgeable and patient with our group of beginners. I was especially impressed by the level of technical detail explained for both for "leads" and "follows," and the amount of practice we were able to complete during the hour that much too quickly passed. After the class, I was invited to stay for a second hour to try the intermediate class taught by Jess, another extremely capable instructor. While this class of eight students was more difficult for me, Jess was very helpful and put me at ease as I struggled. I very much enjoyed both classes, found the teachers and other students friendly and enthusiastic, and immediately purchased a pass for the month. I can't wait to return!
