Pet Pantry

First of all, Pet Pantry is not just a shelter. Their work helping people afford to keep their pets…read moreis extremely important, and they give out food, supplies and low-cost veterinary services to those who need them. In Philadelphia, helping reduce surrenders in this manner has been part of a formula that increased that city's shelter survival rate from 11% to 80% in just six years. (Yes, Philly also has an aggressive spay/neuter program.) After losing my cat to cancer, I decided to take a look around and ended up adopting an 8-year-old male cat who had come to Pet Pantry from an overcrowded house. PP had farmed him out to the Forever Home in E. Petersburg, which is where I went to see him. PP made good on its 30-day health warranty by removing a knot/cyst of some sort from the top of his head, at no cost. He is much more comfortable without that. With PP you get a cat that's spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, and has been through a health and behavior screening. I have no problem with an 8-year-old cat, either. Kittens are gone in a week, and young adults that rub your legs and purr are gone pretty quickly as well. But older cats need homes too. Sometimes you have to do the most good possible for the pet as well as for yourself. As long as PP does the important work of helping pet owners keep their pets, and ensures spaying/neutering, vaccines and health/behavior screening, I certainly can recommend them for anybody seeking a rescue pet.

Came home to a fire in our neighbors tree displacing some young squirrels. They were as high up as…read morethey could get (as they were singed and burnt), but still were screaming. i asked the firefighter after the fire was put out, who could come and get the squirrels. he said he didn't know, and to ask the officer at the scene. I counted 4 in the tree on the remaining branches. you could tell they were hurt. I placed my call to an organization that is well known, so someone could come and get these lil guys out of the tree and help them. They had me going back and forth with phone calls over the next 1/2 hour, only to tell me that can't help and they sent me a list of places that may be able to help. Saw "Acorn Acres " so I called them . Betsy told me that if I was able to get them, to bring them to her. I couldn't climb a half burnt tree, even with a smaller ladder I wouldn't be able to reach them. Felt hopeless, just listening to the one screaming. Then I got a call from the neighbor that one had fallen from the tree i immediately went over with a towel, called Betsy and she said to bring him right over even tho it was 10 minutes before they closed. She was so incredible. She was kind but to the point. She was so knowledgeable as well, and told me how I could follow up on my lil guy. I didn't know there were any type of rescue/hospital/rehabilitation for them! I felt like I was just passed off, or that it wasn't enough of an emergency for other wildlife organizations that I had contacted. I am so glad I found her and her rehab ! I don't know what I would've done with the lil guy if she wasn't there! Hopefully he'll be okay, but if not, I know that I left him in caring hands, and someone that will do all she can to make sure he's in no pain! Thank you so so much Betsy!
