We recently took over $500 (used) books into 2nd and Charles and they said they would text and email us once the books were evaluated. I just called since we had not heard from them and they said they finished the evaluation on 5/30 (day after we took the books in) and they said since we didn't respond they gave us store credit of $57.00 and the cash price would have been $27.00. There were books worth over $100 used and they were going to give us only .25 per book. This is a ripe off. It might be a good place to buy books but don't sell your books to them. read more

My girlfriend told me that this store has PS2, PS3 and Xbox games and with that being said, I had to check it out. That's what I did this afternoon. I was able to get a lot of PS2 games for cheap and some were from my childhood that I haven't played in years. read more

What's not to like about 2nd and Charles? Not much. Interesting place--reminds me of my youth. It is "retro," and the inventory cycles in and out//always fresh. Most of their inventory is purchased from folks like you and me who bring it in for appraisal and purchase. The only reason I deduct one star is for my son's comment and experience--they low-ball the folks that sell them stuff and make a mint from the folks who buy stuff. That is their business model. So, from the eyes of a shopper...it is a fun place to visit after the gym. They have interesting things, and the rest is through the eyes of the beholder. read more

New used book store in Madison, Alabama. Today was the grand opening. The large store has a wide selection of books, comics, music (CDs and albums), video games, children's books, audio books, guitars and other music items. The store was crowded with several special events for customers (I Love bacon food truck, face painting and ballon's for kids). The book buying process is tedious, prolonged, and not financially rewarding. I had to stand in a long line to sell my books. The first line logs you in, creates an account, and gives you number. Given this was their grand opening they were busier than normal and told me it would a couple hours before they could assess the books and provide their offer to purchase my used books. I went and ran some other errands and after returning home I received a text message that they had assessed my books. I returned to the store and stood in a long line to be told they would give me $2.55 and to get the whopping $2.55 I had to go stand in another long line. No thank you! I spent $2.55 in gas traveling back and forth to the store and my personal time is worth more than $2.55/hr to stand in line. My expectations were not out of line, I didn't expect to get rich on the transaction, but standing in three long lines and two trips to the store to get $2.55? No thank you! I think the store is a good place to buy used books, but don't waste your time selling anything to them. Donate it to a church, have a yard sell, or donate to your local library and get a tax write-off. read more

They have everything from used CDs to new coffee mugs to my favorite silly post it notes by knock knock.com. hand puppets, hardbacks, paperbacks, pop figures, movies, t-shirts, children's books. Religious books and DVDs and CDs. They want you to buy a tote for 1$ at checkout which I declined. They don't have bags so if you go bring your own Two bins were marked free; however I didn't look in them. I didn't rate them higher because of the mixture of quality meaning brand new is moved in with used whereas I'm used to booklegger where everything is 50 % off the list price and a better value. Also I think they should have bags for your purchases. It's a big sntorr and it's not arranged to quickly find what you want. Plan to roam around. Picked up some things for mom and the grands. I'm new to the area and was so excited to see that Madison had a used book store. At first, I was impressed. So many books! But then my opinion changed. Here's why I'm not crazy about 2nd & Charles anymore... 1) The books are not put in alphabetical order so good luck finding a particular author you're looking for. They could be anywhere in the store. 2) The new books are overpriced. Really overpriced. And in my experience, they are brand spanking new books, meaning you can't walk in and find a used copy of a book recently published that someone sold to them. I have a feeling they probably hold those back so they can get more money for the "newer" ones. 3) The used books are overpriced. I could buy a new version on Amazon cheaper. To be fair, I come from the land of Half Price Books where used books are cheap, everything is in alphabetical order, and you can find used recently published books and the price reflects that. So I'm comparing the two stores. (I also haven't browsed 2nd & Charles manga or comics.) But my daughter and I won't waste our time here again. We'll just order from Amazon. Sad because we both love spending time browsing used books stores and always want to support brick and mortar but we've been disappointed too many times with this place. read more

The employees here are always friendly, but the place is still pretty new, so the employees are new, too, and won't always know how to answer questions. They have new and some used CDs, DVDs/Blu-Rays, books, console games (PS, Xbox, and DS), and comics. Some nights have themed events. They've changed some of their novelties stock, and I suspect that will rotate often as they get leftovers and overstock from parent company Books-a-Million. They need more time to turnover new, remaindered books and get in some good used books. They'll never be a MacKays, but if you can't make the 2-hour drive to Nashville it Chattanooga, 2nd & Charles May have what you need. Their trade-in prices are a bit low-balled, but frankly, so are Booklegger's, so they pay what the market will accept, I guess. *shrug* They do buy comic collections, but I don't know how they compare to Haven or The Deep with regard to prices they give. read more

The staff here a real knowledgeable other products that they sell they're very helpful and help you find books CDs movies comics and other things that you're looking for I recommend coming to this kind often they also have great deals on books and stuff and they also have if you're in need of mystery box they have they have some it's very cool you never know what you're going to get that you might find what you've been looking for I recently some of them in the past and I was looking for to certain movies so I bought one box and one week and the more of the movies are there I was so excited so I waited about two weeks went by bolts another box and that part 2 was in the other box so I got both of my movies but I really loved and two other boxes so if you want a good mystery box game was finally friend this is the way to go I really enjoy doing it have a great day I give them 28 Stars if I could read more

I was looking forward to visiting the new 2nd and Charles, I understood it was similar to the Tennessee McKay's chain, which I adore. But I found it a HUGE disappointment. The pricing is horrible for used books, the organization - and you'd have to stretch to even use that term - is just awful. I was looking at the Religion section and they have religious fiction mixed in with popular religion studies mixed in with commentary mixed in with church history mixed in with devotionals...it's a MESS. There's no rhyme or reason - I found the same "Christian Fiction" book in four different places across 10 or so columns of shelves. If you're interested in a particular genre you better pull up a chair, you're going to be there a while scanning every single book on every single shelf. They need sub-categories and some real organization in the WORST way. I also take exception, as a normal-height person, to the EXTREMELY high top shelf of every bookcase - way beyond what anyone could actually reach. Sure, they have stools scattered all over for you to clamber up on, but REALLY...you couldn't build book shelves most people can just reach up to? I see no logic there at all - you condemn everything on the top shelf to book purgatory, out of the reach of mere mortals. I'm an absolute book fanatic, but I cannot see any reason at all to ever return to 2nd and Charles - my time would be better spent driving to Nashville or Chattanooga to visit McKay's. At least they are organized, have book shelves normal people can reach up to, and their prices are easily at least 1/2 or more cheaper. What a tremendous disappointment. I won't be back. read more

Good selection of video games, but was not impressed with much else in the store. Most of fiction is just lumped together, so if you like a specific genre, you really have to dig. Lots of full-price books and merch that was interesting until we saw the price. Great idea, but poor execution. read more
