Amazing store if you want to geek out. Just don't buy games or consoles there because retro games are likely not refurbished. Prices are great for used books. Seems like they only buy back good quality items, which is great for buyers. If you are selling items to them make sure you do not bring in junk because they will only be giving it back to you. I do like that they offer cash price or trade price for their buy back. They seem to be a bit under staffed so be prepared to wait a little but, you only have to wait a little because the employees hustle. read more

I somehow didn't realize this was a bookstore after passing by it several times. When I finally took the time to check it out, I was pleasantly surprised to realize it was decently-sized and sold both used and new books - along with other entertainment items. I got lucky the first couple times with finding some old R.L. Stine and Sweet Valley High books I was interested in at a bargain price, but I haven't been so lucky the last few times I've stopped in. read more

Horrible customer service from both Kayla the lady at the register and Andrea the manager. When I went to complete my transaction at the register I was asked "which toy or book would you like to donate today" and it caught me off guard and I asked what she Meant to which she responded the same thing, I eventually realized she was asking me for a donation in which I said no and was met with immediate attitude. As I swiped my card I told the cashier that she shouldn't word it like that as it's confusing and makes people think they have to make a donation. She could simply ask "do you want to make a book or toy donation?" She told me "you can talk to my manager about that" So I did. Once I got in the car I called the store and asked for the manager. I was told I was speaking with Andrea or Adriana. I explained the situation and I was told that the wording is standard procedure by 2nd and Charles and the "local" donation go to some lady in Orland Park IL. Local is highland,Gary, Hammond, ect. I explained that the wording they used was not necessary and could cause problems and confusion with customers. If they would have asked if I would like to donate straight out I would've said yes. But it felt like I was being forced. I was told "that's your opinion" and that they pretty much didn't care, very rude staff. I won't spend my money here anymore and I suggest you don't either. First time ever to this location. I don't understand why a Trade In has to be 3- 5 hours. I mean there was 1 cashier and 2 Associates working the floor and it wasn't even busy.... A CUSTOMER should come first and my Trade In should've been done in a timely manner maybe 30 -45 minutes at the most. I asked the Store Associate if my Trade In could be processed ASAP and She said NO - and she was snippy about it. Not a Good experience - Gurnee Mills store is much bigger and better. I love this brand new book store. Plus they sell old school video game just like Disc Replay. They even sell old school records. Great selections too. The reason why I give this store 4 stars because they don't have free wifi, and a cafe coffee shop. I believe this store should get a coffee shop inside this store. I always go to Barnes & Noble in Orland Park or Oakbrook Mall or Bolingbrook or Evanston or Old Orchard Center Mall or Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills Illinois or Valparaiso Indiana. Other wise I love 2nd Charles as my 2nd favorite book store. I do recommend. I'm glad it's close to my house but I will still continue on traveling to Chicagoland area to go to Barnes & Noble where they have cafe inside the store. I will come back to 2nd & Charles every once in the while. I do recommend anyone to come check it out. Check out service is outstanding too. unfortunately, my experience with some staff members regarding my collectables-comics, was pleasent initially then drastically changed, my first offer of comic books was amazing. next visit, after dropping off a bunch of comics the bid amount was substantially a smaller monetary amount, to top things off when i declined the bid and went to pick my items a supposed mgr in this dept placed stickies on various comics thinking he was going to cash in, word of advice do not assume a bid will be accepted without a response and re-placing my comics out of order was highly unprofessional-these comics hold decent value they are 9.4 grades and above, comics from the 90's. what happened to common sense, respect or even proper etiquette is that too much to ask for?? major upside-i love the selection of items at this store! read more

Awful customer service! Tried to find a test preparation book, and walked through the store to find it. They had an extremely small section for SATs/ACTs, etc, but couldn't find what I needed. Tried asking the front desk if they could help and automatically said to me "We don't carry any test preparation books here." Really? Because I checked and you do have a section. Will not be returning here & will continue buying all of my books elsewhere. read more

Worst experience ever! Not only was I not helped after being in the store for over 45 minutes, every time I asked a question it seemed like no-one knew what I was talking about. How can you base part of your business off electronic sales if the employees are not trained properly with answering questions I had. Many answers I received were "I don't know?" I walked into the store with no expectation nor a pre conceived notion of what I was walking into. 1. Was greeted with a friendly hello immediately upon my entrance. 2. The store is big. Bigger than I had thought it would be from the outside. 3. A vast variety in what it seems to be their intent of what the store is to sell. 4. While the prices were on the higher end of things I don't think they were ridiculous like some of the other reviewers made them out to be. 5. The "pop funko" selection is impressively big and the prices aren't too unreasonable 6. They have their own organization as any store would... figure it out and you'll be amazed at some of the cool things you'll find. Give the store a chance if you like comics, video games books and other things. Go in with the notion it is a resale shop 1st and a normal store 2nd. I'm not sure how the trading in method is done because I haven't tried yet. All I can say is I have things in my house that either I'm going to throw away or not use so i get a few bucks or some store credit then I'm already ahead. Terrible customer service walked by several employees not one bothered to say hi or ask if I need any help. During the checkout process same problem wasn't polite didn't inform me about the option of buying a reusable bag. I'm not sure what the original business model was, but it seems to be many things entertainment. Books, games, musical instruments, candy, clothing, and much, much more in one store. There are few stores like 2nd & Charles, the only other store I could compare it to is Half Price Books. This particular store though is just okay for me. The Naperville store is much better and I think it's compared to size. This store is small, everything feels cramped. So overall I really liked this store. I was looking for a particular Disney movie and had tried everywhere to find it- online, target, disc replay, game stop, etc. You name it, I tried it. I called 2nd & charles to ask if they had it. After a short hold, they came back and told me no, they don't have it. A couple of days later, I walked into the store just to see for myself and literally the first thing we saw was a Disney section with about 4 of these movies that I was looking for on the top shelf. I was a bit miffed about this since I had called and as a result spent time looking elsewhere. I was willing to put those feelings aside because i just love books, and bookstores and i'm so happy to have a bookstore back in the area. i did love the ambiance but i will admit that no one asked me if they could help me. We tried going there to shop their comic section 2 weeks ago. Almost every comic was turned upside down so they could scan the bar-codes on the bottom easier for their inventory. Today, I called to ask if they were done and had fixed the section. The mgr was rude, and said the comic area is not a priority at all for them, and that the entire area needs to be redone because their employees apparently didn't give a damn on where comics went. She said they have no timetable for when it will be done. Pretty sad that they have managers who aren't even concerned about presenting a big section of their store so people could actually buy. I think it is a very nice store. I really love their DC comics section. In addition, they sell cool card games and interesting knick knacks that I would love to have in my room. The only problem is that a lot of the items are a bit overpriced. The plushies are cool too but there was no price stickers on them. I wish there is a price check machine for the convienence at least, but really I do not want to make a fuss about it. I think that this a new favorite store of mine. I met a really nice cashier there though. Her name is Diana. The one time I bought a wonder woman book and she showed a lot of interest with my purchase, She told me that her name was also Diana like the character. I bought in about 15 books to see if they would buy them and was told it would take about two and a half hours and then they would text me with an offer. I never received a text or email or even a call. I tried calling several times and each time I was put immediately on hold. The following day I returned to the store, after calling and again being put on hold, and saw that there were a total of three people in the store and none of them were being helped by any workers; therefore, there was no real reason to be put on hold. When I asked what happened to my books the worker asked for my ticket and just gave me my offer on a receipt with absolutely no explanation and walked away. I have never taken in books here so I didn't even know what the receipt was for and had to search for another employee to explain. She looked just as confused as me when I showed her the receipt.... regardless the employees need better training ( I've been here multiple times and have never been acknowledged by an employee unless they were checking me out) and I don't suggest anyone take their items to this place until they figure out their service issue. read more
